* June '05-CAPS Meeting-Beat 2431

Here's the Low-down

Twenty resident's attended a quick moving, June CAPS Beat 2431 meeting.

But why so few people? Was it because beat facilitator Kevin O'Neil wore a Electric Light Orchestra - World Tour Concert T-Shirt? ( My version of the CTA tattler... ) Also in attendance were 5 police officers, a Chicago Internet Project intern, DevCorp North Special Service Area Manager Rene Carmago and SSA commissioner Katy Hogan.

Lot's of mindless stats were given. Funny as it seems, I enjoy this part. Calls for service in the past month were logged in at 1044. Cel call hang-ups seem to be a problem with 144 calls... calling then hanging up. Gee folks, if you call, know why and who you are calling... at least say hello. That way they can track you down and fine you for wasting their time. Andrew Velasquez III, Mayor Richard Daley's choice to head the Office of Emergency Management and Communications, told the Police and Fire Committee that a public outreach campaign, dubbed "Make the Right Call," is being planned in an effort to further reduce the number of prank 911 calls. In a crackdown begun earlier this year, the city has started mailing letters to suspected prank callers, with warnings that those who refuse to stop making bogus calls face fines of up to $1,000.

* 51 people called with parking problems. Shocking. Is the 1300 block of West Morse a major problem this month...again?

* The Allstate CAPS Grant gave away 3 auto theft club devices in a raffle like drawing.

* Rene Carmago gave us the 411 regarding the extra special security the Special Service Area taxpayers will be paying for. More delays have this program beginning July 1st now. This after being told in a very public meeting by the same person on March 23rd the program would be starting on April 1st 2005. So... can we believe Rene this time or is he blowing more smoke at us?

* The possible gang style shooting in the 1100 block of West Morse was discussed. A car involved was located blocks away with no one in it, no one wants to talk. The case is still open. On a positive side, this was the first gang shooting since February.

* The Morse Pod is ending it's six month run in July. Maybe Alderman Moore will move it to the east-side of the el tracks on Morse and Glenwood? If I were Joe, I would call these people and not do this again.

* The 1241 W. Lunt, 1345 W. Lunt, 1340 W. Morse properties were mentioned as hot spots, the police know about the 1340 W. Morse property. More about this property this week. Any questions?

" On a positive side, this was the first gang shooting since February."

Woke up to 5 gun shots last night/early morning, followed by zooming police cars and foot patrolls walking on 1500 block of Farwell.

I could not find anything in the papers today.

We heard 5 shots in the early morning that sounded very close. We then saw a pair of police officers circling around the neighborhood on foot, shortly after several police cars sped around with and without lights on.

I wish I had more info than that, sorry.

I browse this site frequently because I also live on Morse. I see many of the same things that Craig brings up and agree with his viewpoints. More positives would be nice, but quite frankly, the truth about what is happening in this community needs to be told. The people (like Moore, Fagus, O'Neil) who hold the most accountability should be paying very close attention. Now if we could just get them to notice things about the community and fix them asap, before Craig brings the issues to their attention, we'll be able to actually be residents and not crimedogs.

There is one thing I'd like to say about the 911 and 311 calls mentioned at the caps meeting. I have to run people off our property a lot. One day last week a punk in a white t-shirt (see the connection) was hanging out next to my building. He was on the lookout for something. I asked if he needed something. Blank stare. I asked if he lived here. Smart mouth. Told him he had to move along. Smart mouth. Pull out my cell phone - dial 311. My life was not in immediate danger, so I used 311. The phone rang 5 times. I hung up after 5 rings. I don't feel guilty hanging up because 5 rings is just too many! Besides, the punk was gone. It's not like a car would have come to the scene in a timely fashion anyway. If they are annoyed by hang up calls to 911 and 311, then we need more cops out on the street!

Running gang members off of our property and having a shootout in front of our building are not things I'm too happy about. I'm also not leaving RP like my parents did 40 years ago. The hard working middle class people of RP have been neglected here for too long. I believe in social programs. I embrace diversity. But I don't believe in giving them free reign over anything, let alone where I choose to make my home.
