* Public vs Private Hiring Practices

If a private business paid it's workers in food stamps, City Council member Alderman Moore would scream bloody murder.

A press release would be sent out world-wide. Public hearings would be held, calling that type of payment "Slaves Wages"!

But when his political action network DevCorp North and Special Service Area #19-24 uses this type of slaves wages as payment for it's janitors, Alderman Moore does a 360 degree -flip/flop.

Alderman Moore cheers with approval.

So according to the website provided above, the Earnfare worker can only earn up to $294 a month after paying off a portion of their food stamps.

"Earnfare participants work off the value of their food stamps at the prevailing minimum wage and then have the opportunity to work additional hours to earn up to $294 per month."

Financially, you'd be better off at McDonalds. Reminds me of those "unpaid internships" they offer at my company under the guise of work experience.

I am happy that the government is attempting to help people find work, but the terms should be a little more favorable. How far do you think $294 goes per month?

Just the Facts - Maybe you can find out this information: How many hours do these workers, on average, put in a month?

How many are employed by DevCorp?

I'm not insinuating anything, just curious.

>Over the next couple months we will be discussing the effect of the DevCorp North run Special Service Area's

The Earnfare program in particular is a great topic to ponder over the holidays. Thanks, Craig!

>Participation in Earnfare is voluntary.

In the same sense that eating is voluntary.

>Participation in NCP Earnfare is ordered by the court.

What percent of DevCorp North's SSA workers are court-ordered?

What percent are from Rogers Park?

Oh, look, Moore's pro-union, pro-living wage persona is scheduled for a public appearance, and will take questions!

I hope DevCorp North's SSA workers can make it to learn more about the importance of unions and living wages and how horrible Wal-Mart is. I hope Joe remembers he is in a church.

Pro-business, Free-Market Joe will get a rest. Hang up the dark suit and slip into a denim shirt, role up the sleeves. Pin the union button on your breast, leave the Chicago Association of Realtors lapel pin on the bureau.

It's like two Aldermen in one!

I wonder if there will be a "Free Bob!" booth set up.

The Earnfare program does not prevent DevCorp North from paying these men over and above the State subsidy

No one is forcing our community or DevCorp North to participate in this program
