* Special Service Area # 24 Scandal, Do-it-Yourself Snow Removal

A repeat performance. No, not the Fantasticks at the No-Exit, the lack of Special Service Area janitors to shovel snow. Here we have a dishwasher or cook in his food service apron removing the snow along the special Service Area #24 route.

I just did one of these stories on the 27th of November.

Another snowfall, another no-show for Ms. Kimmy Bares and DevCorp North!

SSA #24 Commissioner Katy Hogan and DevCorp North Board member Mike James join in meetings, praise and promote DevCorp. But when it comes time to get those services they promote delivered, they do it themselves.....

....Again.

On the plus side of this story, the Broken Heart gives a little free press for the Fantasticks. I could of cropped it out but felt like spreading some good cheer.

The taxpayers along the in SSA #24 route are on their own when it snows on weekends.

Officially, how much snow accumulation needs to take place for the SSA guys to take care of the snow? Are they supposed to provide service 7 days a week?

Thanks for correcting my ignorance on these points...

Intriguing idea, an explicit service level agreement on the service provider...

Ok, not about DevCorp and snow removal but snow removal in general -- I am thinking of making stickers for homes, businesses, and buildings that don't remove the snow from their sidewalks whether it's 2" or 20". First offense, your door will be plastered with a sticker that says something like "Good neighbors shovel snow. Won't you be a good neighbor?" Repeat offenses would lead to a sticker that says "Shovel your snow, you ass, before someone slips and breaks their neck on your sidewalk and you get sued. What is wrong with you?"

Really! I am appalled at the residents of this hood who don't shovel snow. Do they think they live in Schaumberg and the sidewalks just disappear in the winter and no one uses them? Do the hippies and greenies have some environmental issue with snow removal? Do you know what happens to 2" of snow after a few days of being trampled in 20- degree temps? It turns into ice. Kids slip, older people have a tough time navigating it. Folks who don't see that the snow is removed from their walks ought to be ashamed. The hell with the "Respect/Don't litter" campaign. Let's just get people to make the walks safe. This is a clear responsibility of property owners. Those who don't do this should have to pay a very steep stupid tax. Stupider even than the SSA tax.

Pamela, I've wondered about that too. It seems that single family homes are the worst offenders...

Speaking of bad snow behavior, I would like to add that your dog's poop is not less offensive simply because it is frozen. Please, oh please, keep picking it up in winter.

Single family homeowners are the worst! Apparently the denizens of these fine residences (and they are fine and generally command close to if not upwards of 1/2 million dollars) cut all their civics classes. Shoveling the snow on your walks is a simple matter of decency to others, respect for the community and residents, and it's what those of us who can afford to own property are supposed to do (technically, we are legally bound to do it -- just ask Mayor Daly). Go to Lincoln Park and the walks are shoveled.

This does raise the finer point that RPs problems are entirely the fault of the bangers and perps, etc. If the more flush residents can't be bothered being good citizens and set an example how can we expect others to respect our 'hood? Property owners set the table and if they set a crappy table then they shouldn't bitch too much when the guests are slobs.
