* Can Anyone Say.... Morseland Night Club?

City's ban smokes out bars licensed illegally
January 29, 2006

BY FRAN SPIELMAN City Hall Reporter

Chicago's tough new anti-smoking ordinance has lifted the veil on a dirty little secret:

Scores of neighborhood taverns are operating illegally as restaurants with incidental liquor licenses.

The problem is an apparent outgrowth of zoning restrictions and liquor license moratoriums.

They forced bars to play a game of hide the ball. They declared themselves restaurants and got a retail food license and an "incidental" liquor license. Chicago currently has 1,932 incidental liquor licenses.

With 5 buck cover charges, DJ's and live bands, how about a break down Morseland, How much do you make serving food?

How much do you make serving booze after 10 o'clock pm when the dj or bands start playing?

Did Alderman Moore know he was being duped by Gregory Altman and Matthew Brokaw when he went downtown to overturn a once denied, liquor license?

Blog-lawyer Westgard said......>"Good catch, Craig"

Any food specials on the January Menu Mr. Westgard?

I never said good or bad business Mr. blog-lawyer, I said they duped the public and the Alderman to get their liquor license.

Mr. Blog-Lawyer said.......>"We would be so much better off if that building were sitting empty again."

Are you implying it's right we break laws to help fill empty storefronts for Alderman Moore's campaign contributors?

Name calling this time, Blog-lawyer Westgard said......>" Maybe these jerks even shovel their own sidewalks."

Got any proof of this. My proof is they use taxpayer funding to have this service done. FYI. Commissioners like the Morseland always get a little extra, extra. The day Matt or Greg are shovling... is a day they are holding a fundraiser for Alderman Moore and it's snowing.

Want to grab a bite to eat on Feb 10th? At the Morseland Night Club it will cost you 10 bucks just to enter.

Westgard mentioned......>"They really tear the neighborhood down".

You heard that rumor too? When will we be having a community informercial meeting calling for a 7 story building including a roof top restaurant at 1218 West Morse?

You folks in Rogers Park are about as fun as a bunch of like Calvinists.

Everything that could be good has to be bad. New development... has to be bad. People out for drinks and having some fun... has to be bad.

Why don't you all drink your prune juice and get out our tiddly winks for a day of good fun.

I like the food at the Morseland, but I wouldn't make that my regular hang-out spot for a variety of reasons.

My girlfriend and I went to the Morseland for desert on Saturday night (because Thai places just don't do desert well). The French Silk pie was awesome. I mean, to die for.

We ate dinner there once before and it was very good. The service was really slow because the poor server had about 7 tables and no help.

The band we heard on Saturday was not all that great, but good enough not to drive me out of the place.

I could say a lot about venues for music in Rogers Park, although I don't really want to talk smack about anyone. So I'll leave that alone. However, a $5 cover charge is reasonable, and no different than a two-drink minimum at a comedy club, or any other place where you would expect live entertainment in Chicago.

I don't know what the deal is with the smoking ban. It seems all the places I regularly go to for food and entertainment are not impacted by it yet.

Cut the Morseland some slack. They serve good food and it's the best thing we have going on Morse Ave. right now. For the love of God, do we really want to advocate trying to pull their liquor license?
