* Lights Out on Glenwood Avenue

The new ground zero in CAPS beat 2431. The eastside of Glenwood Avenue. This view is looking south from Lunt, towards Morse Avenue. This area is the new Open Air Drug Market. I know you've heard it before here on the Hell Hole, but "It's dark"!

I won't bore you with all the quick links, just this one.

Back to the lights out on Glenwood Avenue. This bank of lights (four lights) have been out for a couple of weeks. Before the peanut gallery chimes in, yes I called 311. I also brought the matter to the CAPS program.

See.... That's what the info-mercials for CAPS tells us to do. Go to meetings and report problems.

Now, I figured the big shots Kevin O'Neil and Alderman Moore knew about it, the lights would be fixed in a timely fashion.

Apparently not. Maybe I should have reported the darkness was a breeding ground for foie gras peddlers?

I walk there on my way home from work almost every day and I don't like the fact that the lights are out. I tend to be more cautious and walk in the street.

Annie- I know there are unsavory characters around the Morse L, but the worst thing that has ever happened to me walking over there is being pestered for money. Not to say I feel comfortable there- it's more a burden to me to have to have to walk through there. I don't have a choice - that's my train station. And you know what- it's not just their street(the dregs)- it's our street- they just like to act like it belongs to them.

After a while, one really starts to resent the same panhandlers, the chopped off tree, the litter, and same no-goods just hanging around taking up space contributing nothing to society.

JeffO talks about the soon to be coming gentrification driving these folks out- fine by me. I'm sick of them.

paradise, jeff o and rpneighbor-

jeff o ,i remember that corner and those people too. do you remember the sro on the corner of surf and broadway? that was a problem for decades until the community finally turned their outrage into organization and demanded a solution. the sro is now gone and the shelters in the area that were responsible for some of the lurkers on belmont, have been pressured by the community, the police and commitment of local leadership to be more responsible and accountable.
paradise, you might start by enlisting the help of the police. commander rottner has defined quality of life crimes as a priority. get to know the officers, express your concerns and be commited to following through with whatever needs to be done. call 911 every time there is a problem and start compiling an arrest and police visit record.
we had a similar issue in the building next door to us. we called 911 dozens of times and each time they responded in minutes. we identified the owner, who happened to be bud ogle, requested a meeting with the alderman, mr ogle and affected neighbors, demanded action and within a week, things were improved and have been since.
i also showed up in court and was ready to testify against someone who threatened my life because i was continuing to call 911. all the officers were there and it made an impression on them that there was a commited follow through. they appreciate that a lot.
