paradise-
there is an art supply store on the same street as the century theater in evanston. upscale and too expensive, but if your'e in a jam and don't have time to go to pearls, it's there.
I shop Staples at Wilson and Clark now. Also Office Depot at Wellington and Ashland. I get my boxes at Burhoffs on the west side. They make their own boxes and Windy City finest in my book. I go to Atlas Stationares at Lake and Franklin. Been going there for 25 years. I print my magazine at Newsweb. A huge contributor for Alderman Moore. I could go outside the city for this service at a lower cost, but keep my money in the city.
Even with being shafted by our city leader as a small business, I still spend most all my money in Chicago. I'm a loyal Chicago City limits buyer. I put my money where my mouth is.

I do.
Sally asked......>"What do I have to do to earn a gift card from Best Buy"?
Litter the neighborhood with a few hundred dated, political/community meeting fliers with Alderman Moore's name on it?
>None of which Craig told you, because he's full of bullshit.
Say, Thomas, how about a breakdown of where Moore's money is coming FROM, by zip-code?
Sally sez.......>"What do I have to do to earn a gift card from Best Buy"?

So why do you buy your coffee from Dunkin Doughnuts and not a small independently owned business?
>You seem to be a poor processor of the printed word - are you really an attorney?
>Your questions about my job are an obvious personal attack and avoidance of ... the point ... of the discussion
Once and for all, YES, Thomas Westgard really IS an attorney, licensed to practice in Illinois, as of yesterday:
Attorney Registration and Disciplinary Commission of the Supreme Court of Illinois
I hope with this post we can move past this issue and move on to the real issue: He's fucking nuts.
I find it hard to believe that of all the people speaking out or involved in this thread, Joe Moore and I are the only people that frequent the Target, Home Depot, and Best Buy in Evanston and Lincolnwood.
I'm not saying anyone is lying, but I simply find it hard to believe that all of you are trekking down to Clyborn or to the Jewel on Broadway rather than these stores in Lincolnwood and Evanston.
Personally, I'd much rather drive out to the suburbs than drive through the gauntlet of Broadway Ave. to get to Jewel. Broadway reminds me of the drivers ed. films I had to watch while in that simulator car. I'm constantly afraid I'm going to get in an accident with a taxi, bus, pedestrian, driver turning left, the driver behind the person turning left swerving into my lane, etc.
Additionally, it's about 22-25 miles round trip to drive down Ashland to the stores on Clyborn from Rogers Park. I've clocked it on my odometer. That's not worth the time or the gas money.
Do the math. If the money is going to Best Buy, Office Max, and other large corporations, the tax dollars lost are negligible, in my opinion. I'm not exactly helping out the little man by shopping at Target, Jewel or Best Buy. I buy some things at local businesses (mainly food and smaller items). However, I can't exactly get a 300GB external hard drive to store recording sessions in Rogers Park. Nor, would I want to pay $100 more to do so.
Let the man shop where he wants. Of all the issues in Rogers Park right now, I'm least concerned about where he gets his office supplies and birthday gifts.
Come on, people. There are several pressing issues in Rogers Park. This is not one of them.
BTW - Charie, How is the city leader shafting you as a small business owner? Just curious.
IHSQ said: Craig, I agree that these purchasing figures are mostly meaningless, but Thomas & Charlie, you guys are absolutely precious. I love you guys! "No, no, that's not right. There's an explanation!" You guys are worse than Fox News. Is is possible that there might be something- just a little, itsy-bitsy thing (think of Roseanne Rosanadana's thumb & index finger)- that Joe doesn't do right? What are your agendae, huh?
OK here ya go......One thing I think Joe does wrong is how he reacts to Craig. Pulling flyers and putting stuffed heart critters in your campaign window (at least the bad seed part) is a defensive move that exhibts a sense of fear. Never ever a good thing in Politics
If I were Joe.......every time I walked into a meeting the first person I would greet would be Craig. I'd shake his hand, thank him for coming and give him a big smile and a slap on the back. I would also put a link to his blog on my website. I would have his flyers in my kiosk of community info and I would call him periodically just to say hi and ask if there is anything I could do for him.
That's just me, and yes it is no secret that I think Joe is generally doing a good job, especially considering the ward he represents. (whatever that means)
Now given the fact that Craig is a bit of a rash and his absurd approach to community activism relies on throwing as much mud as possible, defemation of charachter as well as inuendo and shuffling quotes to create a perception of reality.
It's no wonder Joe does not embrace Craig more.....can you blame him?
Oh and regarding my adgenda? It is nothing short of complete and utter world domination.

Please go back and read my post a second time....
Good one Bill....Feel better now?

Yeah, I want my Alderman wasting time being protecting geese. And if a trip to Evanston allows more time to save the damn geese, then all the better.
Btw, negative campaigning does often work which is why campaign managers do it. JM has more of a divide and conquer strategy which happens to work very effectively against all other methodologies.
>Dunkin' Doughnuts outlets are indivdually owned franchises ... you are usually supporting a locally owned business
This is a little too strong. The DD franchises in our EL stations are all owned by a small handful of firms. See
CTA APPROVES AGREEMENTS FOR NEW AND IMPROVED CONCESSIONS
> Have no idea what it costs to get a Dunkin doughnuts franchise bought, up, and running these days. Does anybody know?
You might naively think a coffee shop or donut shop might be an avenue out of poverty for some of our neighbors, but no. What the CTA is doing is not supporting investment in the neighborhoods, it is the opposite. It is treating the residents of Chicago as consumers. The DD franchise opportunities web site list opportunities in Chicago for investors with "$750K liquid /$1.5M net, Minimum 5 unit development." Not exactly a starter business. The deal with DD is not creating wealth in our neighborhoods, it is sucking cash out of our neighborhoods.
Toto sez: Where do you folks in RP want your next Target, Wall Mart, Best Buy, etc.
Lets see (imagine dreamy clouds floating across they sky for a few minutes as I look toward the heavens).
I got it Sheridan Road. Let's tear down some homes and build one.
No. No. No. You silly fool. You might ruin the lakefront.
OK, how about Clark Street. You can tear down the mega mall.
No. No. No. You silly fool. Clark street at the point isn't wide enough to carry that amount of traffic. Can you imagine the Elston like back up on a Saturday.
OK, how about Touhy or Howard Street.
No. No. No. You silly fool. Can you imagine how many individual small parcels they would have to negotiate and buy. And surely at least one of those parcels may be owned by a contributor of Joe Moore. And we'd have to assume that the owner's are getting more than what there property is worth because they contribute to someone's political campaign.
How about Devon Avenue.
No. No. No. We can't displace the ethnic contingent.
So how about Morse Avenue.
No. No. No. There's too many historic buildings we can't lose.
So where would you people put a large big box store in RP? I bet if Joe Moore proposed a big box store in RP most of you would be howling like puppies over it.
Perhaps TW is right. You get all bollexed up over small, incidental things like where J.M. spends some incidental money when there is truly needful things that should be criticsied. Instead of focusing on what's really important, Craig has you running from pillar to post on downright silly issues.
Toto Has a New Song For You.
THE BROKEN HEART WILL MAKE YOU WEEP
BECAUSE YOU WANT TO BUY DIRT CHEEP
BUT GO TO EVANSTON AND SPEND A FEW
THE BROKEN HEART WILL TELL ON YOU
WHEN THEY BUILD BIG BOX IN ROGERS PARK
YOU’LL CRY ENOUGH TO FLOAT AN ARK
WORK YOURSELVES UP IN SUCH A STEW
THE BROKEN HEART AND FOOLS LIKE HUGH
Here is what you do, when any Howard Street Evanston store asks for your zip code, then give it to them and try to throw in your zip plus four. That way, the companies know where the money is coming from. Also, when the companies try to move locations, encourage, don't discourage development, where you want it.
When you shop at Half Foods in Evanston or on Ashland, give them your Rogers Park Zip code, so they know who is buying from them. That is, if you want Whole Foods to move in. If you don't want development, then don't. It seems like there is this schizophrenic mentality here, with those who want botique shopperies, but don't want Tarjais as they say. You won't get either if you discourage one. Even Roosevelt is progressing, but they invited development, while we discourage Walmart.
My feeling is that if it encourages interest in our community, then Walmart is welcome even if it has a dorky corporate symbol and walks with a limb, labor wise. Let them bring in the jobs and deal with the labor issues, later.
I have been to Walmart and it is too packed on Touhy in Niles, so another Walmart could not hurt Rogers Park. It could only help bring people in to see other businesses as an incidental, where there is actually space for a Walmart.
