* And the Winner Is?

Loyal Reader Submission

Our very own Angela Caputo got nominated for a journalism award..... Do you have this article - I couldn't find it online. Wouldn't you think the paper would be proud of their reporter being nominated? Jerks. Anyway, here's the scoop!

Business reporting, community newspaper:

Chicago Journal, columns, Bonnie McGrath
Chicago Journal, "Taqueria Trinity," Max Brooks
Pioneer Press News-Star, "Measuring Up," Angela Caputo

Congratulations, Angela! It was a great article, required reading for all Rogers Park residents, and an important report card on the Gateway project, including evaluations of the project in terms of property tax generation and job creation. The article was the result of tons of hard work. I wish neighborhood reporters had more time and resources for this kind of investigative reporting.

Here's a link to a (somewhat massive, sorry) PDF scan of the article:

Measuring Up
Six Years later, Gateway Shopping Center is still half-empty

by Angela Caputo, Staff Writer, News-Star, July 27, 2005

Excerpts:

"... between 2001 and 2003 ... the property tax revenues fell short by nearly $1 million ..."

"[City of Chicago] Planning Department figures on job creation show a 20% shortfall in securing full-time jobs, and a 40% shortfall in part-time hiring."

" ... the shopping center remains 45% vacant ... "
