The rank and file nurses at the Cook County Hospitals recently voted to strike because of poor pay and terrible working conditions.
Tell that to these county workers listed below. These folks sure aren't looking to strike anytime soon. In fact, these folks listed below are living high on the hog, on your dime... or shall I say 9 plus millions of dollars.
We at the Hell Hole will call them the super-rich three dozen. With an average salary of a quarter of a million dollars a year, these people listed below make more than President of the United States.
It's no wonder there is no money for the nurses. Do you know one of these special people?

Who knew working for the county could be so rewarding? Maybe Dave Fagus is on to something?

Well, for those of us who work in the corporate salt mines, we notice this all the time. Here's a recent article that sent shivers down our spines as we 'lifted and fetched'. OVERPAID CEO’S
Put the CEO amounts into perspective of these directors and you may find the government is an arm of corporate america in disguise. Please notice the part about 'perks'.
How much does Stroger make? How many perks are in a Switzerland bank account?
Once again Craig, your stepping deep into doodoo you don't know anything about. If anyone googles one of these doctor's names you can get into the Cook County database of employees and Salaries.
There are nurses getting paid $70,000 per year. There are "transporters" that get paid $25,000 year. Doctors in charge of hospital sections getting paid 3x what a nurse makes and you think that's outragous. Do you think FC is planning to cut their salaries. Yeah, he'll resuffle and make a few cuts, but he's not going to wholesale cut these positions. They'd lose their hospital accreditation. What kind of accreditation do you think the hospital would have if they didn't employ doctors to run the hospital? Also, do you think the county would be paying these kind of salaries if they didn't have to? Can you show us what other hospitals on the scale of Cook County is paying their administrators in a major US city? Tell us what would Forrest do?
Exactly what is this position: Medical Div. Chairman XII? I can look it up, but if you know, please tell us.
As for getting a higher salary in the private sector, that really depends...most GPs in office practice don't make anywhere near these kinds of salaries, but I'm not sure if this is a fair comparison...
I'm not sure about the accreditation point that Toto makes; what kind of accreditation are you referring to? The number of medical directors they have may or may not be a factor in accreditation - again, it depends on what they actually do, among many other things...
By the way, a $70,000 salary for a nurse isn't starting pay, and it's not for cleaning bed pans...it's for experienced professionals doing complex case work, and the good ones earn every single penny...
Another question I have is whether this list does anything other than their Stroger job...in other words, is the Stroger job a full time gig. Again, I can look it up, but if you happen to know...
Rebecca: I'm not saying nurses aren't worth their salaries. They are. But put things in perspective. The doctors are running sections of the hospital. Why so many? You probably need one in charge of every major specialty. Some of these docs also work for the county health system as a whole including Provident. These docs are not your run of the mill GP. Specialty docs that supervise other specialty docs get paid highly.
These doctors get paid what they get paid because of the competitive market. There's nothing sinister about this. If Cook County didn't pay competitive salaries they would not be able to draw quality doctors. My critisism of Craig is simple. What will Claypool do that is different? Salary standards for these kind of positions are well tracked. Do you honestly think these doctors are being paid beyond standard of other hospitals in the area? If they are please provide the data.
I think Claypool is a fine person. But don't burden him with sainthood. He's a politician too. The higher the pedistal, the greater the fall.
I think one can be certain that Fagus' salary as a pencil-pusher at the hospital isn't based on his skill as a ward committeeman, because if that was the case, the county would be violating the minimum wage law!
Now it may be clear to everone why you see signs for Stroger plastered in the 49th Ward, with none to be found in the areas adjacent to the ward.
Toto - When I asked what this title "Medical Div. Chairman XII" meant, that was a real question - the vast majority of the people listed here don't have any particular professional credentials next to their names, MD or otherwise...because of this, I did not make the assumption that they are doctors, or any other kind of clinician. If I understand correctly, cookie county is saying that the chairmen are both clinicians and administrators - so thanks for that clarification CC. That said, I guess that lack of information on the credentials is an oversight on Craig’s part.
As for the salaries, I think that other commenters said that doctors make much more in the private sector, which is something that doesn't ring true to me - some do, many don't. I did not mean to imply that teaching/supervising physicians don't potentially merit this level of compensation. But it was never clear to me until I read CC’s comment that this is what these people do. If they have the responsibilities that cookie county described, it would seem to me that this is a fair and competitive level of compensation. Those who disagree should look up what the heads of large charities make, for example, before they begin casting stones (and no, I’m not saying that some of these people don’t merit these salaries – I only give it for context) http://www.charitynavigator.org/index.cfm/bay/content.view/catid/68/cpid/304.htm
Finally, agree that non-clinicians supervising clinicians is a bad idea. Stroger is a JCAHO accredited facility and therefore requires medical staff to be self-governing in the oversight patient care.
RR- My point is that Craig throws out acusations about people in the hope that he can get people on his little short sighted bandwagon. My compliments to you on being inquisitive enough to look at the issue and not the emotion. If you google any of these names you will certainly see they have C.V.s that indicate they are doctors with specialties. Though I wouldn't be at all surprised to find they've made political donations, I find Craig's childish inuendo that they are sitting around collecting salaries with no work arrogant to the extreme.
What I feel that you don't understand is that some of these folks are national leaders in their field of medicine. These range from nationally known medical doctors to brain surgeons. looking at their payscale if you do a little research, you will see that most if not all are gettin paid 1/4 to 1/3 of what they could make outside the county system. Having this access to this caliber of medicine and surgery is truely unique and they should be applauded for their committment to the community not chastised don't you think. Aren't the Cook County residents worth haveing the best access to some of the best medical doctors and surgeons in the area or do you think the weathly with good healthcare insurance should only have access to the best? You be the judge.....
