* Neighborhood Walk Begins Successfully...

Then Ends in Failure

Last night a group of neighbors, some 40 members strong, joined together for the first annual positive walk in CAPS beat 2431 for 2006.

As promised by CAPS beat 2431 facilitator Kevin O'Neil at the previous CAPS meeting, the evening started with a police department roll call (pictured above) on the corner of Morse and Glenwood as the neighbors watched from the other side of the street. (pictured below)

It was a good "meet up" on the Hell Hole street despite the fact a couple bloggers made a big deal of this walk and posted wrong information on their blogs and the yellow, un-official fliers. The neighborhood group gathered and listened to a few speeches in front of the dreaded Block building before heading out for the evening stroll in the center of the "Broken Heart".

Can you believe it, one blogger even posted a incorrect walking route. Gary "the spam blogger" posted the CAPS beat 2431 group would meet in front of 1340 West Morse and walk east to Sheridan and then west on Lunt.

The group did indeed meet at 1340 West Morse like Gary posted, but here's where Gary screws everything up. He posts we would "walk east to Sheridan and then west on Lunt." Instead of going east, we walked west to Clark Street, then south to Farwell, then west to Lakewood, where we headed south for a stop at a problem building, then a u-turn back north on Lakewood, then east on Farwell, then north on Sheridan, then returning west on Morse. Gary would have known this if he would have gotten off his rump and walked with the group instead of blogging bogus information.

Had he been there he would have known by the end of the walk, less than a dozen of the original forty were left standing. Now there's an interesting tidbit to post on your blog Gary. How'd we lose so many people in such a short period of time? Like all the empty storefronts that line Morse Avenue, did they fall into the Hell Hole? Or maybe they followed Gary's directions?

Blognotes:

* Un-Official yellow flier maker Thomas Westgard was a no-show. Frankie his sidekick covered for him.

* 43rd ward Aldermadic candidate - Special Service Area Tax (SSA) guru and political author Peter Zelchenko, who wrote, "It Happened Four Years Ago" was in attendance. It was nice meeting you Peter, thanks for the autographed copy of your book. It's a "must read" for aldermadic politics.

* Pioneer News Star reporter/photographer Felicia Dechter was snooping around the scene and asking lot's of questions, plus she was seen taking a few photos. It was nice meeting you Felicia, thanks for the business card exchange.

* The newest guy brought a broken window.

* Alderman Moore once again proclaimed " Crimes Down!"

Carol J- I thought you lived here and would therefore know the demographics quite well- maybe you're just being rhetorical.
Why judge by skin color? Why not judge by who is willing to show up and walk? Everyone is welcome at a CAPs walk for pete's sake.

The hellhole was invaded by NOH people who attend their own beat meetings. Compliments of Sr. C we brought the bullhorn. You guys gotta make more noise!

There was one building near Farwell and Wayne(?) that the group stopped at, because of drug dealing activity.

Perhaps so many people dropped out because IT STARTED TO RAIN!

Also, I would like to remind everyone that the police said that there has been no reports of the recent goonings. Therefore, we really don't know if they happened or not.

3-10-2006 @ 3:17 PM call placed to 911.
I was driving eastbound on Morse turning left under the EL when I noticed a group wearing Tar Heal blue having some altercation with a group wearing yellow. As I made my way past the group a Van stopped and was blocking traffic (part of the Yellow Contingent).
I honked my horn encouraging the van to move. That is when my car began to be pelted with the readily available debris from the crumbling EL platform. The pedestrians wearing yellow encouraged me to leave my vehicle and a couple even tried to gain access to my car. Oh how I miss my GLOCK.
My call to 911 followed after some clever driving tactics cleared my vehicle containing my 2 children from the scene.
Due to the noticeable increase in police presence I widely circled the block and did find an officer parked across from JB Albertos talking on his cell phone. When I related this information to him he shrugged and said what do you want me to do about it?

I applaud everyones efforts except that particular cop.
Since I am frequently on Morse I have noticed the new Toll collectors that hang in front of the Top Hat late at night being rousted more frequently by the cops.

Crime is down and the neighborhood is nicer.
Well thought out policies are taking effect and this bog reveals yet more improvements to be made.

A visit to the Harold Washington Library will reveal the owner and contact information to be posted later.
Knowledge can be more effective than firearms.
Nervous cops should drink less coffee, I know it helps me.

Since I have children who bring other children to my house no guns will be in or near my Chicago house. However my kids will learn firearm safety from myself and family members that hunt and are in law enforcement.

And they do legally pack heat when visiting.
Hope someone attempts to goon them.

from the cook county assessors office.
The PIN and photos are of that building from the http://www.cookcountyassessor.com/filings/searchflat//search.asp
website.
Be vigilant not vigilantes.

We have a system of laws and clearly the property owners have found ways to exploit them.

When we find the true owners of that building what are our legal options?

This is a business enterprise, albeit an illegal one.
Lets look for creative to the point solutions.
Maybe it is time for a camera on the east side of the El platform.

James Ginderske wrote, "How many times have we called and not had the calls dispatched? Did those incidents not happen?" This happens to me ALL THE TIME in West Rogers Park. How can this happen? It amazes me how many times I have called in blatant drug activity going on right in front of me and a car NEVER shows up. Seriously-I have watched for hours. It happened last night...I called 911, and the car never came. Who decides if a car is sent? I'll tell you that a neighbor of mine is a cop in a different district and he has actually pulled up my calls (and those of neighbors) and he is amazed that they go unanswered. Who monitors this? It could be an investigation of its own. Also, on Thursday I was in front of Soo liquors (1412 Morse-nice tree there too-needs to be replaced) and the deals were going down right across the street in front of the sub shop. A cop car pulled up, the cop got out and looked at the 8 guys and then double parked and went into the lounge next to Soo...he didn't do a thing and he was quite aware of what was going on. He must have needed to pick up a quick-pick.

Please review your records for slow responses to 911 calls.
Provide dates and times as well as nature of the call.
I have made many calls to 911 in 20 years in RP and gotten many levels of responses.
Some amazingly fast and some not so quick and some plain disregarded. Remember calling 911 is not a call to the police but to an agency that contacts the police.
Bureaucratic redundancy with multiple points of possible failure.
Are these public records? If they are lets print and bring to the next beat meeting for a line item of discussion.

Does anyone have a photo of Marcus Herron to post here or any of the other goon squad members?

What is his current address. Cook County or RP?
Did he participate in the recent attacks?

A friend once mentioned a book called people we should know that serves other communities like ours.
An online venue such as this one could be great place to circulate such a book.

Rumors are not facts but documented facts can reveal problems and lead to solutions.

Some victims will never come forward but if this is a persistent problem then someone hopefully step forward.

The next 2431 beat meeting is scheduled for June 19 @ 1530 W Morse, please come.
As I walked and posted fliers (constantly looking over my shoulder not wanting to be the first confirmed victim) announcing the next beat meeting I personally requested individuals to attend these meetings. All were very receptive and some are exceptional gardeners. Many new condos that will be occupied by then as gentrification is proceeding nicely along Farwell and Pratt.
While we raise awareness here lets participate in the process and help modify policies if needed.
This past Sunday as I ate an early dinner at the Morseland and sat outside I noticed that more people biked or walked than drove.
Perception by the RP newbie's is it aint that bad and are spending money on Morse Ave lets encourage that to continue.

From what I have heard from my cop friend the 24th district is known for not responding. He works in 17 and it doesn't work like that over there. I have also seen great coverage in the 16th. Could this be part of a grand plan...don't respond so that we can claim crime is down? Also, my friend told me that there is no longer a lock up at the Clark and Devon station so if an arrest is made the cops have to drive the person all the way to Western and Belmont. Some cops don't want to put in all of this effort. I'm not sure if this is true but that is what he told me. Once I witnessed an accident at Howard and Western and it was bad so I stayed as a witness. It was on a Friday night, rush hour, at an intersection, and snowing hard. We called 911 for two hours for a car to come out and make a report. We gave up after waiting over two hours. All this time there were two marked cars parked in front of Mullen’s and one in front of The Candlelight. Finally, when I call 911 from my yard in West Rogers Park on my cell phone I ALWAYS get Evanston's emergency and they have to transfer me to Chicago's emergency. That wouldn't be too good if I had a knife at my throat...hmmm...but maybe Evanston would actually respond. How can we get a list of the calls and why they aren’t responding?
