* Candidate Builds Office With-Out Displayed Permits

Construction being done at 1600 West Morse Avenue with-out any signs of a displayed building or work permit(s).

I shouldn't have to hunt the building to find a building permit. But I did, like a kid in a Easter egg hunt. The permit should have been displayed, right there, at the door. But it isn't. At least when I was there to take these photographs.

And this guy wants to be the Alderman. Doesn't he know the rules to building? It's simple. Display the permit when doing construction.

I know, he'll most likely pass blame to a underling or the buildings management company. He'll most likely say it isn't his fault. Or he'll say he knew nothing about it. Is that who you want running the ward? Someone who is going to pass the buck? Someone who will shift the blame?

Let's take a look see inside. We have all sorts of construction work going on. Electrical work here. Heating and Air venting work there. Plumbing work. Let's not forget tile work. But really now, no signs of a permit or permits to do the work.

Other questions. These guys are working on the fourth of July weekend. Are they union workers or is someone cutting costs? Or are they trying to get the job done before the building inspectors find out? Hiring non-union workers doesn't say a lot about the candidate running for a public office in the city of Chicago. This is the big, blue collar-union built city. Not a small town bank project in the northen suburbs trying to cut a few corners.

Is this how Don Gordon is going to conduct business? It could be worse. He could be building with-out permits all together?

I don't know how things are run in the small business arena, but i've worked and managed commercial buildouts and it was all permits, union and planning.

The city has a funny way of catching people out when they flip off the rules. In most cases.

Oh but it does matter if you own or rent the space. The landlord is liable if you rent. Everything Craig has posted is merely speculation. He doesn’t know for sure what type of work is being done or how Gordon would react if it were all true. Gordon is not Moore. Gordon is not Moore. Let’s not put them in the same boat. The guy has a clean record and has been active in the community for years. As Queen of Wands has said, the campaign has to be based on real issues and what is of concern to our community. Plus, Craig may have an ulterior motive to discredit Gordon because, naturally, he wants your vote if he does indeed run for alderman himself.

It’s troubling to think that Moore is probably thanking Craig for this. He’s got the incumbent advantage and he’s betting on the other votes to be spread thin among the other candidates.

One further comment to you Craig and as I reply, I heard that a condominium association, on Lunt avenue with a BIG FOUNTAIN in the court yard, was FINED not long ago, for building decks and/or porches WITHOUT A PERMIT..... Hmmmm. Is this how you know so much about this (or wait) maybe not enough........ Birchwood, Gemma, Queen, any comments?

One more comment to Craig. I just wanted to say i wasn't coming directly at you with my last comment. But as you found out personally, management was to blame, but the owners got hit with the fine. I'm sure the same applies here, Don's not doing the work, the property is. So if we want or in that matter, anyone wants to blame Don, not his fault. Building management, yep, im sure it could be theirs, the building owner, yep probably is too. But one more question, is there a general permit for the building? Maybe electrical upgrades? If how some people are putting the perspective on this issue i'm doing some improvements too. I was thinking of having carpet installed, replacing the tile in my bathroom, and putting in more ornate trim around my windows and walls, so i better head down and get a permit right away!

"One blogger proposed to stage a debate between the candidates, and between the candidates and our incubent. I hope we see that soon."

How is that going to reach ALL voters in the 49th ward? Not everyone lives on the web you know. Whatever happened to old fashioned debates moderated by people who know the issues, attended in person by the candidates so the audience can see, hear, ask for themselves? Petitions can't be signed before September but we're supposed to sit around reading someone's blog advertised by Devcorp?

Tenants pay rent, report problems, request repairs. Owners are responsible for the property. But I think that's been stated previously.

Are you aware of how many 'fix-up' jobs have been allowed NOH by Joe to a certain non-profit without permits? Perhaps he wasn't aware because he was too busy with the other for profit builder buds? Taxpayers also pitch in for trash pick up.

Thanks for the clarification on who Thomas Westgard is. Can you be so kind as to identify some of these anonymous posters and what relation they bear to the respective candidates?

I too look forward to an open and meaningful debate among the announced candidates. I personally believe that James Ginderske will serve our ward best, and I think the conversation that will take place within the community over the next seven months will bear that out.

It is hard to make objective judgements on the arguments offered on this space, however, without knowing who exactly is providing the information. So, I urge all posters to be more open about who they are and what relationships they have to the candidates.

Gemma,

I think those are all good questions to pose to the candidates. Let's hope that each is equally forthcoming with his answers.
