* Morse Avenue Nightlife

Exclusive Low-Budget, Lo-Def Film (Not-Rated)

Mini-documentary video from Global Cop:

This is an attempt to take away the perception from these drug-dealers, pimps and 'bangers that they own the streets. Funny how something as simple as a camera pointed at them makes them scurry.

They sure don't act like that most of the time - it's usually nothing but shallow bravado and chest-puffing overcompensation for their pathetic lives. Turn on the camera and they turn into little girls hiding under their ill-fitting t-shirts.

Viewer warning: Global Cops premiere four minute video documentary on the Morse Avenue nightlife isn't for everyone. Some may find the content too graphic in nature. If this is the case - click to another website now. If anyone else has video footage like this, post it on You-Tube and send the link to me like Global Cop did. If I like it, I'll post it here. Good luck.

Will do Morse man. I took this when I was living on 7000 N. Ashland and my (now ex-)wife was getting harrassed on the way to the 'el'. I've since moved East of Sheridan. I did however take a ride over there with my still camera a week or so ago (Craig's blog here inspired me to check on the old hood) and it looked better, I didn't have anything to photograph. But now that I've got my videocamera back out, I'll take a ride over there again this weekend.

I think Craig's warning on the video isn't really necessary, probably just creates expectations leading to dissapointment. I've got some really crazy stuff from my time living in Humboldt Park/Logan Square. Some of it was picked up by WMAQ and run on the local news - gangs shooting at each other, etc.

Sally, why am I lucky? That is the sentiment of someone who has surrendered the streets to the lowest jerk. Are you lucky that you haven't been murdered or carjacked? You don't need to provoke them to get harmed. It actually works in reverse - you can see on the tape, stand up to them and they dont' know what to do. Cower and you embolden them - and you make it worse for everyone else.

Lucky? That is sick thinking. I guess I should just stay home then, why put my fate in the hands of luck when I can just let them own our streets, roll up my windows and avoid eye-contact. Good luck with that approach.

Just because my (ex-)wife was gorgeous, I guess she should have worn a veil to keep luck on her side walking to the 'el?' Not while I'm alive.

Aren't those CTA banners- not SSA? They refer to the Morse L I believe. I forget what they say, but isn't it something like "a new" something or other? I couldn't help but think that it almost seems to put certain undesirables on notice that things are a changin'. Not fast enough for many it seems- but they are changing.

Those holes in the ground WILL be filled at some point God willing.

It's all the vacant storefronts that really make Morse so Ghetto.

I still think the videographer (and Craig) are brave to confront these people. And it looks pretty pathetic the way they all hide from the camera.

This is pretty gutsy and quite bold. Who knows this strategy could actually work. I like it. I saw that this guy walked into the street because he was getting filmed. If he was actually doing something he wouldn't have been worried about it.

I agree with gentrificationistheft. The man behind the camera is condescending and does not use the right approach...I have walked up to people on Lunt and Morse doing things I find offensive. I have tried to have a friendly conversation, letting them know I am aware of what they are doing and do not appreciate it. That creates a sense of community and dialog instead of just pitting people against each other, which is all this video represents- both implied and clearly stated.

Gentrification is Theft. Ha, the name says it all.

If putting one's savings on the line to invest in property is theft, what do you call living off your baby's mommas section 8 vouchers at the taxpayers expense while you pimp out teen girls you've gotten strung out on crack?

You take issue with me for being condescending (and white) while you defend loiterers and public drinkers who've turned a once livable street into just another ghetto?

You must log onto this website from Buffalo Grove, obviously you've (or your girlfriend) have never tried to walk to the Morse 'el' at night alone, through the drunken drug dealers, pimps and whores.

It's easy for you to be condescending online, let's see you be a man and stand up for the rights of others to navigate city streets without being harrassed, robbed, battered and offered drugs.

I'm opposed to the cowardly anti-loitering law, it is unconstitutional and isn't even effective (not to mention a waste of our tax dollars defending in court). But I sure as hell will use what limited rights I have left to push back against these people - who, you should not doubt, actually believe they own the streets.

I did this one time, those punks are out there every night.

Shannon, irony is lost on you too, how else would you define condescending than attempting to tell others how they should solve a problem. Your way is the only way huh Shannon? When I tell you how you should deal with your loved ones being harrassed, then I might be as condescending as you.

You have no problem pitting people against me in this comments section. I guess you reserve your kill-em-with-kindness approach for those you think can't handle your true opinions. Typical lowered-expecations racism. Or perhaps you're just scared they'll kick your ass if you tell 'em to move aside and let you pass on your way down the sidewalk.

What do you think those guys are doing standing on the corners all day and night? Clueless, naive liberals; you're worse than the street thugs. It is your policies that brought them here, that turned them from decent hard-working families into drug-dealing, CHA dwelling broken home misfits. Now you dare attack me for trying to deal with your consequences in one of the few ways left: simply showing them for what they are. You don't even like the looks of them, why else are you explaining away their shame.

Paradise, please explain how you glean "stealing" from my previous comment.

I do not wish to be condescending and/or judgmental. I want to get to know everyone that lives in RP and have good communication with them. I do not tell other people how to solve their problems; I simply share my feelings. I firmly believe that respectful communication is a good way towards progress.

I am a teacher and community worker who has been working with kids and adults in the area for over 5 years. I feel that it is my responsibility to try to do something to make our kids' futures as positive as possible. I don't want kids to be exposed to things that they are not ready to emotionally or physically process. So, yes, when I see young people behaving in an unacceptable way, I go into teacher mode and say something RESPECTFULLY.

You know nothing about my politics, my income, my personal life, etc. Stick to the facts.
