* Alderman Moore Campaign Photo Op

Come and celebrate the ground breaking of The Granville on Wednesday, January 31, at 4:30 p.m. at the corner of Granville/Broadway, with a reception afterwards in The Granville sales center across the street from the construction site. Site preparation work began on January 2.....what a great way to kick off the New Year! Keep your eyes on this corner as the building rises over the next year.

EDC has spent much time and effort to ensure that the community gets a high-quality new building at this site to stimulate more positive developments on Granville. EDC began focusing on this site many, many years ago when we put together a marketing package for the site that Loyola Univ. (previous owners) used to market the property to prospective buyers. Their brokers complimented EDC's product, noting that it provided all they needed to find a good buyer.

In addition, EDC has spent many meetings with the developer, Loyola, and Joe Moore - the 49th Ward Alderman, to help hone the development.

When a glitch with relocating the public alley threatened to derail the project, EDC worked with City departments to assist the developer in moving through the alley relocation process. EDC also helps businesses find appropriate commercial space in Edgewater, so we found Access Group a location for the sales office right across the street from the site.

We worked so hard on this project because we feel it is the right development at the right location. The 160 new living units adjacent to the Red Line and other public transit sources provides an alternative transit bonanza to the new residents and helps direct transportation to options other than the auto. In addition, we have appreciated the cooperation of Bill Platt and his team at Access Group Realty in responding to community input on the design and retail tenant mix.

We hope you are able to make the Ground Breaking on Wednesday and celebrate with EDC and all of your neighbors!

Blognotes: This would be a perfect time for a Anti-Moore protest. Items to bring: A bullhorn, chants that rhyme, handmade signs attached to silver shovels.. the works.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but this isn't even in JoMo's ward. So, not only is JoMo not helping his own ward, he's helping others? Way to help your electorate.

Boy, I'd think this could really hurt during the election period. That is, if I'm correct in Granville not being in JoMo's ward.

The northeast corner of Granville & Broadway (and the north side of Granville from Broadwy east to the CTA Red Line tracks) is in the 49th Ward. Since this ground breaking ceremony is at that corner, it is a 49th Ward event, even though it is literally in the coffin corner of the ward.

As for items to bring to a protest, may I suggest an effigy of Moore, clad in an orange prison jumpsuit, suitable for hanging and burning. (After all, hanging in effigy is a quaint old American custom, once commonly used to show utter disgust for worthless public officials, which certainly describes Moore.)

The (Perpetual) Alderman of The Future

Moore sold Platt the zoning change Platt wanted back in 2004

Zoning change

Platt razed medical offices.

A vacant lot sits there for more than 2 years.

Now weeks before a close election Moore schedules a photo op.

How refreshing! Joe's going to dig somewhere other than Gale Park this time.

Another development I can't really complain about and that JoMo will take credit for, as though it was HIS money that is on the line on this.

I once dreamed of being a builder, but it leaves a sour taste in your mouth to have to grease politician's palms to to get a zoning change that should have been made years before because it was appropriate, to risk your own (borrowed) money on your own project on your own property.

The zoning should be done because it is appropriate, not because the devoloper paid for it in the form of campaign contributions. This lot may not have sat vacant for so long if there were not so many greedy pol's palms to be greased, and so many bureaucrats to clear a path through, who make it a point to obstruct you every step of the way.

Joe's not doing the digging here, only the developers, at greater cost than need have been. The only thing Joe ever dug was the grave of any business owner or developer who didn't contribute to his coffers.

Maybe he has at last dug his own grave.

Ha ha ha. You bunch of whiners. This new development will help Granville out of it's hole. Soon it will be another lovely Bryn Mawr!. Did you guys know that Sweet Occasions (that started on Morse) is opening on Bryn Mawr in Edgewater!.

You guys are so anti-everything. If a proposal to build something as nice as was proposed for Morse you'd turn it down. Even if it meant new people with money available to spend in your neighborhood. And new businesses that would open to help them spend it. But your flinty eyed opinion of developers means you can't even conceive of letting a developer build something new.

So whine all you want about the nasty buildings. It seems like it's getting you nowhere fast.

Hugh said...

No one is whining about the building, asshole.

We are opposed to pay-to-play politics. Moore is in the pay-to-play biz.

We are in favor of community-based planning. Moore is in favor of developers purchasing from him the rights to build whatever they want.

We are in favor of developing vacant lots. Moore thinks developers should be given as much time as they want.

So... which one of the other candidates has taken the pledge if elected never to accept campaign contributions from developers?

Hugh said...

Moore is the ONLY candidate in this race who has taken a pledge to not take contributions from developers and BROKEN it.

Moore pledged not to take contributions from developers, 7 years ago, back in 2000!

Neighbor David Starr, a former research director for Citizen Action/Illinois (of which Moore is currently a member of the Board of Directors), performed an analysis of Moore's campaign contributions. Starr found $57,100 in contributions from real estate developers, and he tried to ask his Alderman about it at a zoning meeting at Pottawatomie Park. Moore, who was chairing the meeting, ruled Starr was out of order.

Some Wonder What a Contribution Buys
Marcella Tardy, Lerner News, April 5, 2000

Excerpt:

" ... it's been my long-standing policy not to accept campaign donations from anyone who has a zoning or land-use issue pending," Moore said. "That's not a requirement of law. That's something I impose upon myself to remove any hint of possible influence."
