Tomorrow (Feb. 21) at 1:30 p.m., I have a court date regarding the criminal damage to property case that happened on January 21st. The location is Area 3, Belmont and Western. Court branch 29-4.
This was the case where I caught the guys trying to break in the Rider Building at 1340 West Morse Avenue. From what we were told at the CAPS meetings, a manager would always be there to press charges should a case like this happen. That hasn't happened. I'm having to now go to court for Mr. Rider. Won't you join me? I'm sure Mr. Rider is way too busy to help someone who helped protect his property and tenant?

Wow...I have returned to Chicago after being gone for 25 years and want to relocate to RP because of all its potential. But your blogs have shown me a side of RP I wasn't aware of. Is crime that prevalent and is livability really that bad that I should look elsewhere? Or are you so partisan against Joe Moore that you are making things to be worse than they are? I am a progressive, peaceful, ex-hippie looking for a nice place to call home. Maybe Rogers Park ain't it.
Hemp - Do you think the photos are 'doctored'? While there are several pockets of great streets and neighbors, there are equivalent or more pockets of not so great streets and neighbors. Just do your homework and remember Moore isn't an ex-hippie.
Bloggers aren't out shooting at people, running slum buildings. We're just telling the stories we see and hear.
Come on up to Howard and I'll take you shopping - in Evanston or the Lincolnwood Mall. I found some super sales at Carson's Sunday. On my way to the bus I had to pick up an empty condom box kindly left outside the gate.
The good old hippie days are long gone.
Hey Toni,
you're lucky it was just an empty box. We get the used, discarded contents tossed around our sidewalks.
Ah, Love is in the air.
Tracy - Oh I've found the 'works of art' in the yard, on the sidewalk, in the parkway...yes, ain't love grand?
Reminds me of that old song.."Love the one you're with.."
Nay-Bore Don't forget to clue Hemps in about Citizen I-Cam and other dbases to look up crime in 49.
We have some issues here, but I don't think RP is a bad place to live. We have many really great people here. Yes, there is some crime, but we have a community that cares about that- that is the positive in what you see on the blogs. And we are demanding better-hopefully we will get it.
I've lived here now 8 years since I moved back and I have never been the victim of a crime. There are nuisances abound, but I am not afraid to walk around here.
I like to call our neighborhood a "fixer-upper" with great potential. We have the good "bones" of a nice old house- we just need some rejuvenation in certain places.

The problem is that RP has been in fixer upper shape since 1991. At what point will the place be renovated? I love RP BUT living here presents challenges: you have to leave the 'hood to do practically everything from grocery shop to dine (after awhile you grow weary of the same 1/2 dozen restaurants). You do have to think about getting hit in the crossfire (2 shootings within spitting distance of my house in 5 months is not a happy thought). You are more likely to suffer a break in here than, say, Edgewater. If you buy, don't expect to see rising property values except during bubblicious times but plan on paying property taxes in line with Evanston rates.
The good news is that there are a lot of great people here. It's very much a community (sort of of like Survivor). And we have an awesome lake. I suffer the rest for the lake which is like no other beachfront in the city.
Hemps, come on down to Edgewater. We're jammin'. Bryn Mawr is wonderful. We just heard that work will start in 6 weeks on the new Nookies at Bryn Mawr and Winthrop. We're getting Sweet Occasions on Bryn Mawr and Kenmore. We've got private cameras on apt buildings and we're sending the drug dealers running (north I hope).
Frankly, the way these guys on this blog have torn apart the three competitors to the JoMo, don't be at all suprised when JoMo wins the run off election. Sure, one will win the coveted space and run against him, but in a run off election, it's JoMo by a mile.
Will Adams throw his support behind Gordon? Will Ginderke throw his support behind Gordon? Vica versa? Will the supporters of the loosers support the one that will run against JoMo?
I sincerely doubt it. So say hello to another piss poor four years of crap in Rogers Park.
Come to Edgewater. Hey, we actually voted Granville dry and won in the Illinois supreme court.
Yo hemps
RP is a great place to live, just moved here myself a few years back and in that short time I've seen much improvement.
Howard st. has many plans but as of now it's not so hot. I like the Balleys, Gamespot, Marshall part of the Gateway Mall. But it sucks that a storage company has so much space, there is also a Dominick's, Pay-less Show, Ashley Stewart, GNC and a few other places I can't remember. One of the shop owners tells me that the reason the Mall isn't full is that the owners are asking too high rents. The owner of the GNC says it's not up to the alderman it's just that folks don't want to pay Lincoln Park prices, yet.
Since RP has only 10% single family housing you do tend to find more large apt building=fewer people invested in the area, renters are great, I've rented most of my life but you don't care about things the way you do when you're paying the mortgage.
As far as photos go, you should see ones from our block, very lovely. Also the beaches rule and I've meet great people here. It seems that if you live north of Howard st, then things suck, if you live on Morse things also suck. I know a lot of RP where people really love it.
There are a lot of people who believe that a change in the alderman's office will turn RP into a beautiful place. I disagree but what do I know? After all I don't even have my own blog. Most people only start a blog to have a way to complain about what they feel is important. All the blogs are filled with incomplete, misleading, deceptive disinformation but I enjoy them all the same. Come to Rogers Park it's changing for the better.
Yo Toni,
What makes a slum? Is it an evil landlord that won't spring for a smoke detector, or a guy who won't mob up the piss smell from a hallway. Or, is what makes a slum the fact that people throw their trash on the ground, People have kids they can't take care of, people have kids they don't know how to take care of because they're kids themselves. The piss didn't get there because a guy makes a campaign donation, the place smells like piss because people are stupid, and they tend to piss out of place.
Roxy
toto, you can take Granville dry as long as you leave Gino's North alone. That is a lovely, civilized little place with incredible decor and great people.
I heard about the revocation of liquor licenses belonging the stores. I see no need of any more package liquor stores and don't support allowing more to open, but I am not so sure that revoking the licenses of stores that have possessed them for over 20 years, and that, as far as I know, have never been a source of problems, was the right thing to do. I have regard for the property rights of business owners and for the risk and commitment entailed in owning a business, and a move that will pretty well decimate a business owner's revenues is NOT to be taken lightly. I hope you guys had real justification for doing this. These places were not Soo Liquors.
I support Gordon, but I will support whoever ends up opposing the Mooron in the inevitable runoff, and I believe others will do the same. Even if the Moore opponant I least want wins, that would be better than 4 more years of Joe, if only because the newbie, lacking Joe's finances and power base, will be a lot easier to unseat should he prove to be a dud.
