You may want to ask around and see if anyone knows what criminal activity took place on the 1300 block of Estes on Mon. evening. At 6:30pm there were about 6 police cars and lots of police tape on the south side of the street (apt. building just west of the alley just west of Sheridan). We would have stopped to investigate but had to get to Anti-Cruelty before 7pm to pick up RPs newest resident, and we were running a bit late.
He’s a bit of a mess with a sad sack story but hopefully by the time the weather turns for the better, we’ll have him in good health so he can enjoy all that RP has to offer.
Signed,
What Happened on Estes?

There was a shooting on Monday night at the Estes address. I do not know what happened. Perhaps someone with the authority to get an answer from the police will give a full report.

That is a gorgeous dog! A couple of weeks in a loving home, and he will be cheerful and glossy.
Why do people give up these animals?
Could someone please post some info on this shooting ASAP. I am a VERY Concerned New Resident of this block and am shocked that this is now the second fatal shooting on this block since September.
I hadn't heard anything about it. I know how it feels to be kept in the dark about this, and I wonder how much crime there is that we aren't told of at the CAPS meetings. I never did find out what happened at Pratt & Sheridan a couple of months ago- no one ever knew where those gunshots came from.
This is why CAPS participation is so low-because people believe that they are not being informed and that their participation is futile.
RP had 40 murders in 2005, I'm told. Yet, when we try to discuss this, we are told that crime is "down". Down from what?
hello.
I've been living on Estes for 12 years and it has gotten worse. there was a shooting at 5:00 p.m in the "gangway"corridor conneting the 1325 estes building and I belive the 1327. he was shot in the leg or foot and was hopping west bound. screaming call the police! i called police
also at 3:00 a.m 2 squad cars were in front of the the 1341 building. I don't know if it is related to the shooting. seems like the riff raff on Lunt have moved over to ESTES
We've had no problems on Pratt so far.
(knock on wood)
Boomer is getting settled in. Visited the vet today for blood tests so we can solve his skin problems and why he walks like a drunk. Hopefully we'll have him in peak health soon and meeting neighbors at the park.
There has been a bit of action around the 'hood lately with cops en masse on 1300 block of Estes and Touhy. I thought it would be too cold for bad guys but maybe they've taken the drug trade inside and the cops are following them? Or they are duking it out inside and the cops are being called?
That building at 1325 W Estes has been a problem for a long time. When I looked at a place there to rent 6 years ago, it seemed raffish and unkempt. I was told that units were let without a lease because "that way when we get a gangbanger we can just kick him out". To me, what that meant was no screening, no stability, and no reliable ground rules for use and occupancy-everything on the whim of the manager, who seemed a little disreputable himself.
I rented elsewhere.
rp dude, regarding your property taxes- the property tax is the most counterproductive and brutally regressive way to tax there is. It means you never really own your property, and it means that funding for education will remain very inequitable and unfair. There are many discussions going on across the country about what we can do to overthrow this viscious tax and how we can replace the lost revenue, and a movement is taking root to put an end to this most destructive and unfair tax. A small PROGRESSIVE increase in the state income tax would be a much better way to fund education.
However, we ought to ask what is happening to all the proceeds of lottery ticket sales, that was supposed to fund our educational facilities. The state has helped promote gambling addiction but has no positive results to show for the lotteries.
I love the name Boomer. The best cat I ever had was named Boomer. Thanks for adopting.
The problem i that hese landlords around here are allowing the people from the torn down housing projets to come and live in this neighborhood. Not all are scumbags, but as you can see, the crime on Estes has risen. Also, some of these guys with girlfriends and moms who have moved to Rogers Park are getting out of prison. Guess where they are living?
The police had better get a hold on what's happening (More nightly patrols) or it is going to be exactly like the housing projects around here!!!!!! The police never show up until the crime is over!!!!
rusty, I've made the very same comment previously, on other posts, and might sound repetitive, so forgive me...
....but 10 years ago, when first I moved to RP from Lakeview in search of some space and grace for a reasonable rent, my boyfriend said: don't go there, it's going to get worse, not better, because Mayor Daley's people have designated that area as the dumping ground for all the Cabrini-Green evictees."
And that's just what happened- we got all the unplaceable tenants from the projects- the criminals and prostitutes and 20 year old mothers with 6 kids. The stabler residents located elsewhere.
My friend said we were the designated dumping ground because our alderman was so out of favor downtown. I don't know if that's true, or it is a case of Joe letting his slumlord contributors stampede this area.
The problem is that the landlords around here have decided to let the people from the housing projects move in. As you know, most of the housing projects have been torn down.
Along with that, now you have some of the worse of the worse moving in. Boyfrinds getting out of prison and moving in, Moms taking in their sons in fresh out of prison.
The police know that this is going on. Still, they do not show up until after crimes have been committed.
If we aren't carefull, this area will be just another housing project neighborhood. It's happening all over the city and some suburbs.
The police REALLY NEED to patrol more...especially at night... late night. Once the drug dealers get a hold on the neighborhood...you can kiss this area goodbye!!!!
The drug dealers, stick-up men, and just plain scum are trying to get a hold on Estes avenue and the surounding streets now... RIGHT NOW!!!
