* Do Not Just Sit Back and Stay Quiet

Thoughts from yet another new Rogers Park blogger. Chicago Redwing 2B writes on his experience voting at what I'm guessing is precinct 12. CR2B doesn't kick out too many blogs, but this one's a worthy look.

ChicagoRedwing2b said....> "I saw some very bad things while voting. I voted at the Touhy Park polling place on Paulina. I voted at about 9am in the morning. Outside, no blue cones were up, campaign flyers were everywhere, and at the gate to the park I counted at least 5 Joe Moore workers standing around trying to push the Moore vote. I refused the flyer and the guy just glared at me.

Later ChicagoRedwing2b said...> " Get out and vote, do not just sit back and stay quiet. If you stay quiet, you allow others to hold power over you, just like Moore wants to hold power of the 49th ward. Please get involved people, otherwise our voting rights will continue to diminish, until one day voting will not even be a right.

Blognotes: Chicago Redwing 2B - We Need You! Please call Don ASAP. Let Don know what you can do to help out leading up to and on April 17th. Don can't win this election alone. He needs help and you seem like his type of voter - A No Mooreman. Tom Westgard and Alex Armour, here's another blog to track. Full blog here. Feel free to leave comments.

From what I have just read, it would seem important to have someone monitoring these polling stations on April 17, to make certain that there is no illegal electioneering going on by Moore's lackeys. The minute they step out of line, call the cops! This lawless action should not be tolerated.

The issue of low voter turnout has been neglected in this week's news coverage. That's an area where the 49th ward and many wards could use some improvement.

The citywide percentage was 33%. The 49th ward ranked 33rd among the 50 wards with 34.84% (7564 votes cast out of 21710 registered voters).

Eight wards had a turnout of 25% or less. The worst was the 1st ward at 18.09%. Only 2 wards (13 and 19) had turnouts higher than 50%.

If less than 50% of the 49th ward's voters actually vote, the election can be decided by a less than 1,000 votes. As we've discussed recently, the deciding margin in 2003 was less than 800 votes.

Seems like the best way to get things fixed is to get more folks to speak up against the problems: to vote, make calls, talk to neighbors, participate in CAPS and block clubs, write letters, etc.

The question is how to get more people involved - both in voting and preventing the kind of illegal electioneering that was so rampant on Tuesday.
