* Sandra Verthein Says

Here's what 48th ward resident Sandra Verthein said to the DFA for America blog.

This (49th ward) is one of the races that really hurts, partly because Joe is such a close friend to DFA and a personal friend of mine, and because he missed an outright win by just 52 votes. 52 votes! It is times like this when you look back and think, "If I only I had ..."

Joe will be in a run-off against Don Gordon, whose main allegation seems to be that Joe is secretly in support of a controversial lakefront infill proposal, even though Joe has stated repeatedly that he opposes any such development.

This was a very ugly race, with the challengers beating up on each other almost as much as they beat up on Joe. I feel complete confidence that Joe will prevail in April.

You gotta love Sandra, she's starting with the lakefront rumors already. By the way, Sandra, what's a lakefront infill?

I just went to the DFA and observed that the DFA had endorsed Joe Moore.

Do people ever learn to look past what people say and scrutinize what they actually do?

We've had Joe for 16 years for the same reason that the country elected the Shrub twice- because the American people have become so dumbed down that slogans, bromides, and empty platitudes have, for them, become acceptable substitutes for reality, and they don't bother to distintuish between a candidate's official verbiage, and the results he/she has actually produced.

I wonder what favors I could get if I put a Moore sign in my window?

Victory in Chicago for our DFA-List Candidates

WARNING: Dangerous spin

DFA endorsed candidates in 9 wards: Just 4 won, but 3 of those were incumbents, and one ran unopposed (Flores). ONE DFA-endorsed challenger won (Jackson).

And she spins it as great day.

"Wow, what an amazing day!"

"It was a great day"

" ... it is so incredible."

"We did it!!!"

Welcome to the reality-based community of the left!

Sandy will go far.

That's so funny. I was just reading this like two seconds ago and thought - maybe I should check the Broken Heart to see what they are saying there.

I just joined the Edgewater/Rogers park DFA through DFA Link and think I'll be helping out Joe Moore. Sorry Craig and crew. What can I say? I <3 Progressives?

I know the feeling..."if only I had..." and I won't let it happen again! That's why I am doing whatever I can to help Don Gordon get elected.

I wonder what all these "progressives" have to say about Joe's electioneering? How can they justify THAT?

Alderman Moore's Illegal electioneering.

Alderman Moore takes money from special interest groups outside the 49th ward.

What favors do they want?

The people who endorse Moore seem to fall into a few very narrowly defined categories, as follows:
1. Members of the Diaper Corps - youngsters and college kids who take manufactured party lines and the bromides issuing from pol's mouths at face value, such as collegeboundonlunt.

2. Limousine Liberals- The folks who show up to work the polls for Joe, wearing fur coats and $3000 watches, who live in gated enclaves far out in the burbs and who regard the middle class folk who complain about living next door to gang-infested sumps, as hopeless bigots.

3. National politicians who have absolutely no grasp on the local scene and its nuances, and back any local pol who mouths the right slogans and toadies to the big donors, like our incumbant.

4. Neighborhood slobs and slumowners who trash their own property and label anyone who expects to live in a decently kept neighborhood as a Republican elitist.

exactly

Edgewater DFA would have a whole different attitude about Moore if they had to meet in the foyer of the Rider building instead of a room above a restaurant in Edgewater

And check this out, dear neighbors:

On Tuesday, the voters IN THE 49TH WARD SPOKE, and 51% DO NOT SUPPORT JOE MOORE. But that means NOTHING to these people. The re-election of Joe Moore is SO IMPORTANT to these people that the residents of the 49th ward are of NO CONCERN. In their twisted reality, you are under the influence of a vast right-wing conspiracy against Saint Joseph of Rogers Park. If the people of the 49th ward will not work to re-elect Joe Moore, well they will bring in outsiders!

Aw! Poor thing! To be a political activist and to have no race in one's own ward! What a waste of talent!

49th ward issues look a lot different when viewed from a window in a high rise condominium on Sheridan Road in Edgewater, I guess.

Ald. Joe Moore may have repeatedly stated to you “that he opposes any such [lakefront infill] development” seeing as your personal friends. However, what Ald. Joe Moore told the Chicago Tribune, just one day after a vote on a referendum on the matter, was something different.

In November of 2004, 88% of residents in 10 lakefront precincts voted for lakefront protection. The day after the vote on the referendum Ald. Joe Moore told the Chicago Tribune that he still planned to keep his mind open to a marina or commercial building proposal, saying, "I would want to see if it would benefit my community." Surly a Marina development would have to include Lakefront “infill”.

As for Don Gordon, I can’t think of anyone more qualified to steward our lakefront beaches and parks in the 49th ward. His qualifications on this mater are just one facet of his platform to help the neighborhood. Clearly Candidate Don Gordon is not just all about the lakefront.

Hey Sandy,

don't you feel just a little silly

boosting a 16 year incumbent

by posting about an ordinance introduced 13 years ago that went no where?

Progressive change from the bottom up

Privatization Accountability Ordinance,
introduced by Chicago's 49th Ward Alderman Joe Moore in November of 1994

Wouldn't you hope an incumbent would have more to talk about before you endorse them or work for them?

Actual accomplishment is optional with DFA - lip service to progressive causes is welcome
