Blognotes: More testimonials from the Leone Advisory Council.

“I offer this latest testimonial for Don Gordon:

The Sam J. Leone Park and Beach Advisory Council has struggled to maintain a viable, enriching, and excellent Junior Lifeguard Program at 1222 W. Touhy for over twenty five years. During that time, thousands of Rogers Park youths have benefited from their experiences at Leone Beach. What was once one of Chicago’s best community partnerships, frequent changes in the Chicago Park District Administration occurred and impacted the Jr. Guard Program in a negative way.

With Mayor Daley’s park’s revitalization projects going on, one has to wonder why Leone Park and Beach has been ignored. Joe Moore pursued other distractions and neglected a problem in his own backyard.

Don Gordon has stood with us in our battles with the Park District. The current alderman initially promised his support but quickly faded from the scene and disappeared. Don has consistently shown his commitment to the lakefront, the Jr. Guard Program and enhanced youth programs throughout the ward.

Don Gordon recognized long ago how preserving the Jr. Guard Program would be an asset to the 49th Ward (and beyond). Our Jr. Guards have represented the City of Chicago in several National competitive events over the years and came out on top in many of them. Don Gordon shares the belief we owe it to our kids to provide a better alternative to gangs and violence with a structured, informative and educational summer experience. The best approach to building good citizens for the future is by teaching them as kids today, in an active outdoor environment. The benefits are obvious.

I do believe Don’s stewardship would greatly enhance the entire community and benefit its citizens. On behalf of the Sam J. Leone Park and Beach Advisory Council, I look forward to working with Don as our alderman to restore the Leone Beach Junior Guard Program to its former glory.

I heartily endorse Don Gordon for 49th Ward Alderman. Please make it a reality!”

Great information. As a resident, I'll say that it's tough to know how these things (communtity programs and improvments, etc) 'happen' and yet, as I get older, I realize: regular people make them happen. Cudos to Don Gordon, and of course, cudos to all community participants. I really respect that this community activity was long-term and committed, not just a show before an election. I'm not so sure what to say to aldooman moore, but his actions sounds like those of a true chicago politician for sure.
