* Don Gordon's First You-Tube Commercial

Exclusive First Look

Here is the first in a series of Gordon for Alderman authorized You-Tube commercials produced by yours truly. First up is Chris Serb who speaks about the Sam Leone Beach Life Guard program. Check out the old, worn out sign next to Chris.

If you want, go to You-Tube and copy the embed code, then add it to your blog. Or copy the url address and send a copy to your neighbors. Stay tuned for my next topic and neighbor.

hey egokitten,

you don't have a clue. try and swim to michigan while lifeguards are on duty at any chicago park district beach. you will be turned around and the cops can be called if needed.

quit crying about the lifeguards and exaggerating. go to the source of the problem, the chicago park district. maybe you should realize how rare it is that someone drowns at a park district patroled beach. compare those numbers to professionally patrolled beaches like florida or california.

Well, I guess Joe Moore was right to sit by while the Park District desimated this program, because those lifeguards are NO FUN!

Yeah, you idiots, if you try to swim out right past their dinghy, the lifeguards will corral you. Maybe that's because their main priority is young children and keeping track of you behind them might dilute that effort.

If you want to train for the Olympics, there's places you can do that on our lakefront. Find a beach with no lifeguard and swim to Michigan City if you want.

FYI -
Leone Beach DOES have an area designated for distance swimming, from Farwell to Lunt, parallel to shore. So far, none of the guards who have chased after me this summer were aware of the distance swimming rules. Just last week I had to inform an overzealous coed of the rules as laid out by the Parks Department and available on the web-site. She was obviously having a bad day because she slapped her oar on the water (missing my shoulder by about 4 inches) and with as much charm as possible told me to "get the hell out of my lake before I have you arrested".

I complained to the Alderman's office in April about the (summer) parking situation at the end of Pratt, where the guards usually park illegally. The following was sent to me on May 14th, nearly 10 weeks ago, by Miss Lopez in Alderman Joe Moore's office:

"I did speak to the 24th District Police Department (Steve Caluris, Watch Commander) and they assured me that their bycicles units would be in place at the end of this month and they will be instructed to ticket vehicles that are illegally parked on park land."

Janet McDonough, head of Chicago's Beaches and Pools, had this to say about the illegal parking situation, also sent to me on May 14th 2008: "...if the Alderman’s office is working with the Police Commander, the lifeguards will have to abide by the law."

Hmmm. Shouldn't the Parks Department be working with the watch Commander to make sure their employees abide by the law?

Finally, here is some more information from Ms. McDonough: "If you have any problems this summer, please do not hesitate to speak to one of the Lifeguard Captains at the location. If you do not get an appropriate response, please call my office at 312-742-5121. In this manner, we can follow up to find out who the particular bad mannered lifeguard may be and proceed to terminate their employment."

The fact is that no one has ever answered that number or called me back.

Finally, Lin Bremer of WXRT radio recently featured a 2-part series about Chicago Lifeguards - spurred by an e-mail I submitted.
