Penn & Teller BULLSHIT! Skewers Joe Moore

Drop what you're doing. If you don't have cable, go over to a friend's house. I'm serious. Now the whole world can share in the joke that is Joe Moore:

Season 5, Episode 2: Wal-mart

Penn & Teller expose America's love/hate relationship with Wal-Mart. We look at the good and bad sides of the biggest employer in the US. We challenge the director of the documentary, "Wal-Mart: The High Cost of Low Price," we reveal union efforts to smear Wal-Mart, we meet a chronically unemployed young mother in Chicago to see how her life changed when Wal-Mart came to town and we look for the silver lining behind third world sweatshops.

This was the best show ever. They ripped good ole' Joe a new one. That was sweet.
He really showed himself to be the putz he truly is.
No matter what one thinks of Wal-Mart, jobs are good. Being able to buy low cost goods is good.
Hey, wait a minute, the 49th Ward doesn't have a single big box store. Wow, the 49th Ward doesn't even have ANY place to put a big box store.
Jeez, I wonder why the 49th Ward Alderman sponsored this crappy ass piece of legislation? Might it be to curry favor with the Unions?

I don't see how that exactly "skewers Joe Moore"

I guess I'll have to watch the episode. But from that description ... I don't see any Skewering going on.

Dear 5-0, Perhaps, as you say, if you see the episode you will understand the skewering.

What was Joe thinking?

Had he never seen Penn & Teller's show?

Did he think, oh, great, national exposure!

Next Borat will interview him.

Walmart is a favorite target of two types: 1) elitist who resent less flush and advantaged peoples being able to afford groovy goods; 2) unions. Where I hail from in the middle of nowhere Ohio, folks were THRILLED about the new Walmart that provided them with jobs (where was the union when these folks were on food stamps?) and low priced quality goods. I'd never been to a Walmart before and had some preconceived ideas that were dismantled after 5 mins. in the store. Workers super friendly and helpful; nice merchandise, bright and clean. They even have hitches for the Amish buggies. Walmart, like any other company, is not perfect but it sure as hell isn't evil either. Joe is an elitist union suck up so he can get campaign contributions to pay for his car, auto insurance, cell phone, computer, and even his son's "allowance." Check out his campaign expenditure filings. See:

Haha this should be good. There's a good chance it'll be seen on Google Videos or YouTube.

Maybe more of a job for Ali G than Borat...but think both of them would see eye to eye with Joe on lots of issues...

5-0, I just got a big kick out of the skewering going on right here. Thanks Hugh!

The whole Wal-Mart issue is a hot button one that gets folks feathers ruffled. So, lets do some critical thinking – o.k….

1) The “Living wage Ordnance” read as follows (for those of you who didn’t vote in February).

“Shall the Chicago City Council enact a Living Wage Ordinance that requires all retail establishments in Chicago greater than 90,000 square feet in size and having annual gross revenues in excess of $1 billion, to pay a minimum “living wage” of at least $10.00 an hour plus $3.00 an hour towards employee benefits?”

2) What is does NOT say is…

“The Chicago City Council shall enact a Living Wage Ordinance that prohibits Wal-Mart retailers to operating in the City of Chicago”.

3) What is does NOT say is…

“The Chicago City Council shall enact a Living Wage Ordinance that requires all retail establishments in Chicago, to pay a minimum “living wage” of at least $10.00 an hour plus $3.00 an hour towards employee benefits?”.

So… comparing the two hypothetical living wage ordnances with the actual proposed “living wage ordnance”, it’s clear that…

The actual proposed “living wage ordnance” DOES NOT target Wal-Mart stores. It targets any store over 90,000 sqft AND over $ 1 BILLION in revenue – yes BILLION ! So, lets compare to some local “Medium Box” stores in Chicago and near the 49th.

Dominick’s on Howard - approx. 73,500 sqft and far less than $ 1 B USD revenue.
proposed “living wage ordnance” DOES NOT apply to this store.

Target on Peterson – approx. 192,000 sqft BUT far less than $ 1 B USD revenue.
proposed “living wage ordnance” DOES NOT apply to this store.

Home Depot on Lincoln/Devon – approx. 148,000 sqft BUT far less than $ 1 B USD revenue.
proposed “living wage ordnance” DOES NOT apply to this store.

Target on Howard – opps not in Chicago.

Home Depot on Howard – oops not in Chicago.

Lowes on Touhy – opps not in Chicago.
Clearly, there are very few stores in the area the come close to the square footage requirement and clerly NONE of them meet the revinue requirement. What was JoMo thinking ??? $ 1 Billion in yearly revinue ! Was he trying to block Halliburton from taking over S&C Electric and installing a 1 million square foot Fois Gras retailer ? Who’s gonna buy $ 1 Bilion in Fois Gras in the 49th ward ?

The point of this exercise in critical thining is…

1) JoMo’s living wage ordance is a piece of public relations fluff with no teeth and accomplishes nothing real. It’s like when the Republican majority & George W Bush were pursing for a constitution ban on G&L marriage. Just a smoke and mirrors distraction from the more pressing issues of the day.

2) If JoMo really wanted to put a real ordnance out there, then why not put one out there that says fuck Wal-Mart in Chicago OR everybody in Chicgo gets least $10.00 an hour plus $3.00 an hour towards employee benefits? I personally prefer the later of the two.

And the real issue at hand, the one JoMo’s distracting us from, is that the retail base in this community, the 49th ward, is and has been faltering. Joe has done nothing to foster it’s growth because he’s been to busy with rampant stealth condo conversions and national politicks.

AND YES !!!!!

How do we get Ali Gee to interview JoMo ? Maybe he could bring a golden goose with.

Actually, Home Depot and Target do have revenues that exceed $1 billion. HD generates over $81 billion and Target rakes in almost $60 billion. Ordinance would also impact Macy's and Bloomingdales which, as part of Federated, generate approx. $30 bil. A bil just isn't what it used to be.

That said, the ordinance is all hat, no cattle.

Man I wish I had showtime!!!! BTW, did anyone else see Kevin Cosgrove testifying in support of delaying the CTA northbound track closure? You would have thought Joe would have been there in a run off. Yet he sends his full time housing task manager to attend the meeting. HMMMMM!!!!

If there was a Borat interview with MOJO which one would come off appearing intelligent?

Margot- a co-worker of mine offered to record it and get it to me. I'll drop you a line when I get it if you haven't seen it by then.
