* The 49th Ward Residents Got 'Swift Boated'

All this talk of who raised what this election season was so out of hand. It became the talk of the internet. Then the whisper campaigns started. And let's not forget the secret 'pink postcard' mailers.

'Swift Boat' this, 'Swift Boat' that. This guy gave this to this guy, so that guy's got to be this guy in disguise.

Confused? Sure, that's how it was planned. Talk about being 'Swift boated'. That's exactly what happened to the residents of the 49th ward.

Talk about who took what money from whom. For years Joe Moore has collected over a million dollars in campaign contributions for outside the ward interests. Some of these guys were real shady. These same people have given money to both parties too.

But suddenly a guy name David Herro comes along - and the 'shit hit's the fan'. His $60K was the 'talk of the town'. Joe made this his single issue against Don, spinning a wild tale into republicanism. He painted the picture masterfully. Joe used a plethora of stooges and servants. They helped make this possible with their lies and deceit.

All the while, the open air drug markets are thriving in Rogers Park. The slumlords are not keeping buildings properly maintained. And to top it off, our commercial districts are mostly boarded and gated up properties. Those businesses that do exist, provide little more than one dollar items - that usually fall apart minutes after taking them out of the shopping bag.

So, while Joe had you worrying about who David Herro was, he took your mind off the issues that plaque the ward.

Crime, overdevelopment, loss of rentals, lack of commerce and Joe's personal neglect to ward services.

I'd say if anyone got 'swift boated' - it was the residents of the 49th ward.

Maintaining the status quo. Too many people hungry for change swallowed the lies - one more time.

WONDER HOW MUCH MONEY JOMO SPENT TO SPRED ALL OF HIS LIES???

Yes, and how about the horrible and unsubstantiated allegations that the Gordon campaign was trying to prevent people to vote. This as a defensive response to all the questionable behavior that was cited on election day by Joe Moore's people. Just when I thought it could not get any worse. They will stop at nothing it seems.

We will find out more in July. Although candidates are required to disclose their contributions prior to an election, in Illinois they are not required to disclose their expenditures except for twice a year. In the mean time as an approximation, assume Moore pulled out all the stops and spend most of what he took in.

Obviously...Nothing better to talk about so you have to re-hash the swift boat crap. It's earth day. Go out and commune with the worms.

I always wondered why the Gordon people's mailers never included one that highlighted the kind of people who gave money to Moore, like CONVICTED ARSONIST BULJABASIC.

A slumlord like Johnson is bad enough, and the Gordon people should have gotten down and dirty with that.

However, arson is one of the most serious crimes in the book. Yet I never saw ONE mailer highlighting Joe's ongoing relationship with this felon, which continued clear to January 2007-this year.

Don's people ran a very clean campaign, maybe too clean. I don't advocate spreading lies that you can easily be called on,but it wouldn't have hurt to have paved the streets with as much real dirt on Joe as they could find, which is plenty.

I think there are a lot of things that the Gordon campaign could have done better. I'm not hating on them, it was the guy's first ever campaign and all things considered, it went pretty well.

They could have responded better to the Herro allegations as reflected in some of the comments above.

They didn't hit Moore hard enough for his lack of ward progress or the fact that, despite his seniority, he serves in no real leadership capacity downtown.

I'm not privy to the inner workings of the Gordon campaign, so I'm not sure if they were tight on funds or what, but at some point you have to look at Harrington. Counting his campaign, the election and runoff, that makes him 0-3 in elections. New blood is needed.

Why don't we start a PAC and raise money for a challenger in 2011. I'm dead serious. Moore is very, very vulnerable and it's never too early to start planning.

Citizens to Defeat Joe Moore. What do you say?

I think Gordon did absolutely great for a first-time aspirant. Here is a man who has never run for office before, who managed to make it to a runoff with a shoestring budget, then managed to raise a respectable amount of money after that, and then managed to run neck-to-neck with his extremely entrenched and seasoned opponant.

The fact that Gordon was able to show so well against an extremely entrenched incumbant is a testament to Gordon's personal qualities AND to the complete failure of Moore. Face it, most people settle into "comfort zones" as quickly as they can, and hate change. They also hate having to think. All an alderman has to do is keep things reasonably clean and decent in his ward, and he will keep his post as long as he wants.

Look at Bernie Stone and Mary Ann Smith. Neither one of these two are anywhere close to being perfect. Mary Ann is known as a power-tripping tyrant to businesses in her ward, and Bernie is lazy and possibly just a little corrupt. Yet both of these people have done their wards enough good that no one sees any reason to unseat them. As a potential Edgewater resident, I would rather work with Smith to abate her fascist tendacies than unseat her, because she has done too much good overall, in that when I moved up here 10 years ago from Lakeview, Edgewater was a crime-plagued sump that was much dirtier and more dangerous than Rogers Park. I credit Smith with cleaning up the crime and making Edgewater into one of the safest nabes in the city while retaining the area's ethnic and economic diversity, as well as the area's huge inventory of really nice low-rent apartments. If I were a low-wage worker who wanted a nice, cheap place in a really great nabe, I would head directly for Edgewater.

Joe should consider why we have more crime and more political contention than the 40th, 48th, or 50th wards, and he should most of all consider that he came within a 100th of an inch of being unseated. We ALMOST won, Joe, don't forget, and you have a lot more people keeping tabs on your every act. Consciousness has been raised.

Let's not forget some of the above was done IN the polling place ON election day by Moore's gang where incoming voters could hear it. No authority witnessed it or did anything about it....

In the 32nd ward residents organized and formed a search committee instead of waiting around for someone to announce.

Four Possible challengers surface in 32nd Ward

August 2-8, 2006 Inside Publications

By Jeff Borgardt Special to Inside

Four names have have been dropped into the 32nd Ward Aldermatic race as potential challengers to Ald. Ted Matlak.

Former Chicago Budget Director Bill Abolt, Randolph/Fulton Market Association director Roger Romanelli, lawyer Catherine Zarnczny and local resident Elizabeth Larsen are those said to be weighing a potential alderman nod.

The 32nd Ward New Leadership Alliance is a group dedicated to replacing the current alderman. They meet on the second and fourth Thursday of the month at the Ashland Bar and Grill. Retired city planner Joe Lake, 70, is a member of the group.

He said one reason Matlak should be replaced is that the alderman does not work with the community enough on zoning issues. 'Sure, he'll say he does that. He says it every year but does not do it.' The group has considered plans to place a referendum on the ballot asking if the community should be considered more on zoning.

Stay home 50. I don't need your crap here.

So civility and community building is "crap"?

Or are you not man enough to actual start working to better the ward?

And if Joe Moore is such a bad guy - why are you the one censoring individuals?

Craig Gernhardt said...

I'm cutting you off because I don't...

1) Know who you are other than living in the 50th ward.

2) Never seen you at any community meetings, marches, circle prayers, etc...

3) Your bullshit bores me to death and it's my blog. Like I said, take you crap to your own blog.

Jocelyn said...

5-0 is no one to talk about civility. 5-0 is a bigot.

Before we start looking for someone to beat Moore in four years we should be sure he's won.
Has anyone heard if Gordon will ask for a recount or if that's now a dead issue?

RA said...

I got it. Why don't we all join the Campfire Girls and sing Kumbaya. This is going nowhere fast.

RA said...

In fact, I'm still trying to figure out what this swift boat thing is all about.

1) A guy gave money to support swift boat adds against John Kerry.

2) That same guy gives money to Don Gordon.

3) Moore and his people complain about the donation.

4) Gordon's people claim they've been swift boated.

Well of course they've been swift boated. They took his money right?

ra - you skipped a step or two in that list.

hey ra:

are you retarded? do you understand a simple concept called hypocrisy?

joe moore used gordon cash contributors to try and bury him. At the same time moore is accepting money from people outside the ward, people who have also supported republicans!

do we have to make this any clearer?

Ron Paul said...

Actually Craig,

You saw me at the CAPS rally NOH.

You just don't know what I look like. And unless you've been to events in the 50th - I don't suspect you'd get that many chances to meet me.

Lastly, you have a lot of people who comment on here anonymously - why can't I?

I'll leave you with this:

"But every difference of opinion is not a difference of principle. We have been called by different names brethren of the same principle. We are all Republicans, we are all Federalists."
