Keep on the look out Rogers Park residents! It's Gooning Season. Watch your backs.
What is a Gooning
by Alderman Joe Moore - 2004
"Basically, it's just a group finding an individual and they start beating on. "There doesn't appear to be a particular pattern. Older victims, younger victims, there doesn't seem to be a focus on [any one] group of individuals."
"The victims tended to span the races, and not just old feeble people or down-and-out people, there wasn't any real victim type so to speak. Young, old, one guy was with his kids. Generally speaking though, they tended to be alone."
Blognotes: What Joe's trying to say is - our gooner's are very diverse.

Craig - I think he is saying that the gooner "victims" are diverse - not sure he's saying anything about the gooners themselves. However, the victims will be able to describe the average age and ethnic makeup of the gooners. But we aren't allowed to talk about that because we would be called racist (and probably age-ist as well).
Yo FatOB you can talk about whatever you want. I'm Black and I think we should send the little thugs to Gitmo. Just for the record the last batch of gooners that were caught were made up of 8 or 9 Black kids and one White kid. My guess as a Black man is that most of the little butt wipes are Black. So there it's said. We as Black people can't fix our problems if we're afraid to sight them. I for one would like to see the Sharptons and Jackson do a full court press on Black on Black crime gangbanging and all the rest. I know some of you Whites think those people never complain about their own race but you're wrong, they do but it doesn't get the same media as when it's a racial issue. Sharpton went after rapper 50cent, Jackson went to defend Susan Smith the white woman who drowned her kids but those the police they were car jacked by a Black man, go figure.
But please spare us the "ooh we'll be called racist if we say the perps are Black" get over it already. Self pity from, well the majority power group in our society, well is just rings a little hollow.
But this isn't about you fatoldbroad, it's about what the hell we can do to round these little pigs up and remove them from our streets. I'm open to all ideas, from the Gov bringing in what's left of the guard to having a 12 hour crefew for anyone under 21. What say you?
I say let's get a military academy at Sullivan HS like they have at Senn in Edgewater. I know the Marines are looking for a site.
The problem with the Marines at Sullivan is that those programs are usually self-selected (can't make those who don't want to go attend that program). I would guess that the gooners are not the type that would self-select for a program like that.
Is there any thing we can go with the Il Congress, any law we can get on the books to make examples out of the gooners?
There are so many gangbangers in the US army now it's a disgrace. Hook these kids up with a Marine and you got twice the trouble, Dr. O is right on the money this type of kid won't sign up for such programs. But lets keep talking and the right path will present itself, I hope.
It's off the subject, captain, but I can't imagine for the life of me why anyone would defend the likes of Susan Smith.
Rather than focus on this NEGATIVITY, please, lets work to BETTER our community, Rogers Park.
I mean really, with all of this energy a lot of you expend in negative thoughts and statements, why not rechannel that energy to do something good for the community, or if you would rather just sit back and complain, then don't expect a positive change in our community.
Yo Brettly you are the light of the world. Yes we need to be positive. After reading about the gooning stuff I had a cloud over my whole day. I like to take long walks around the hood and hate to think about these pigs who attack people. I even thought I should stop reading the blogs in the am but then I need to know what's going on around the area. It's easy to think positive with all the spring flowers and blooming trees.
Miss Coast yeah I agree with you on Susan Smith, clearly I was making the point that those who accuse Jackson of being a racist, people like Tucker Carlson or buttwipes like Glen Beck, are simply wrong.
Hey Brettly,
You've got some room to talk. Your own blogsite has a negative tone to it. I'm sure you don't write every song about spring sunshine and flowers growing.
And one more thing, I don't tell you how to write your music so don't tell me how to write my blog. So, if the site bothers you, stop reading. It's that simple.
I have never thought of Jesse as being a racist. Rather,I have thought of him as being an attention-craving rabblerouser. He has this way of adopting a cause and clamoring loudly for it without thinking it through.
Couch Captain,
You have some very enlightening comments on this problem.
I think the bulk of the problem lies with the parents. Often the parents are children themselves, who are not financially or emotionally ready for the task of child raising. Discipline for these children comes in the form of cursing and hitting. Proper supervision while the parent is working or in school is a hit or miss affair. It is no wonder these children learn violence and anger at an early age.
They run with a certain amount of immunity as well. The law does not have strict measures for minors. The most cops can do is intervene and take the kids home with hopes that the parent will deal with the situation.
I often wonder if a good big brother, big sister program would be effective in giving these kids positive adult guidance and supervision and positive ways to channel their energy off the streets. Thoughts anyone?
One of the guys in the boxing gym I attend narrowly missed being a victim of gooning a few years ago. He punched one of them and sprinted off before the rest could grab him.
I was spanked and cursed out as a kid by my parents, but I never spent a day as a guest of the police. But I was raised in a different time, when kids weren't given the run of the house and the street, social service "experts" didn't force their rules about parenting on everyone, and parents and other adults taught kids about having respect. I agree with Margot that there are a lot of parents who, well, don't know about being parents, hence society having to deal with the egregious behavior of their kids.
Any change in preventing juvenile crime has to first start with whomever is responsible for raising the kids. As long as some parents don't step up to the plate in their responsibilities, we're always going to have these types of problems, and they will get worse.
Boxing Tomboy,
Thank you for bringing up respect!!
That's where the crux of the issue lies. We have become a society that does not respect each other. It's not just kids. They are learning it from their parents. We have become a me first and damn all the others generation. Think of the last time a couple or a group walked single file to allow you to pass them on the sidewalk.
This rankles me and I experience it daily.
However, I too was spanked as a kid and believe strongly that sometimes spanking can be a valuable tool. What I am speaking about is mothers slapping their two year old kids and cursing at them, merely because they can't keep up or they are a little tired and cranky. That I cannot commend or understand, yet I see it daily.
I wish there were mandatory screenings required for people before they were allowed to procreate. I swear, there are so many people out there who are not in the least bit ready to have children who you see walking around every day, and theres nothing that can be done to stop it. People should be controlled like animals, because in a lot of ways, they're not that far off. It is a well known fact that dogs and cats that don't get fixed have a much higher rate of getting knocked up and causing excessive unwanted animals running around the streets. It doesn't seem to penetrate people's minds to use BIRTH CONTROL. Yeah, so a condom doesn't make sex feel as good, but to me, it's a hell of a lot better than having a living anchor around your ankle that you neither want nor love.
Who the hell knows, maybe it's just a scam to get food stamps and government assistance in everything else.
I'm glad to hear someone who is black speak up about this matter. We have been trained that even the slightest mention of "black" issues, people start getting up in arms about it being racist, and then the whole issue gets buried as usual.
