BLOGNOTES: Alderman Moore has taken $45,000 dollars in campaign contributions from outside the ward unions in the last few days. The outside unions are doing their best to keep their political stooge in office. Can anyone tell us if Larry Thorpe is a card carrying union member anymore?

Hmmm...I wonder why Moore didn't bring up these contributions last night when he spoke of Gordon being "bought" by republicans like Herro?

Outside unions? You have no clue what you are talking about...ALL of these locals have members in Moore's ward.

I believe that is the same Herro that has made donations to the other republicans, Barack Obama, Mayor Richard Daley, Lisa Madigan, and Jesse White.

AFSCME, SEIU and UFCW all have members who live in the 49th ward-- How does that make them outsiders?

Put some names to your claims. Example, does Larry Thorpe live in the 49th ward?

Try getting some guts and use your real name next time you sign in, you cowards.

I don't know Larry Thorpe myself, nor do I know where he lives-- I was responding to your claim that unions are outsiders in the 49th ward.

So "juneway" and "dr o" (presumably not their real names) don't get called cowards just because they agree with you? That's telling.

Craig - you forgot to list the SEIU in kind donations which are also pretty massive.

What the big box ordinance will accomplish is to drive larger retail businesses out of the city to less restrictive suburbs. We have enough obstruction here as it is.

It would not only affect Walmart, Target, and Home Depot, but also Macy's and Dominic's.

It is a discriminatory and irrational law that would accomplish only the opposite of the desired outcome. You don't have to love Walmart or Target to see that this law would be economically destructive, and would militate against job creation where it is needed the most.

Also, Walmart starts people at over $10 an hour, while ACORN, that incredibly superduper wonderful grassroots org, was paying people $6 an hour to pass out their misleading little "attack" flyers. Shouldn't ACORN have to pay a "living wage", too?

You will notice that most neighborhoods in this city contain little business that pay the minimum to inexperienced employees. This law would not compel them to pay anything above that, nor to provide benefits.

Why not lobby, instead, for a national minimum wage hike that would be binding on all businesses, not just those that a few people love to hate?

This law is typical of the Mooron's initiatives- a pandering "feel-good" that blatantly targets emotions by use of 'buzzwords' and symbolism ("Walmart" "big box" "living wage") but would accomplish nothing, least of all its intended purpose.

Actually, la Dr. O IS my real name.

Mike, Craig is merely pointing out that what is good for the goose is good for the gander. How can Moore attempt to blast Gordon for taking $60,000 from an individual with an interest in this election when he has taken hundreds of thousands, if not millions in cash an "like kind" donations?
Besides the BBO will NOT turn McJobs into living wage jobs in RP. It will turn possible McJobs in RP into Mcjobs in Skokie or Evanston, which RP residents will need to take the CTA or other public transportation to get to, leave RP STILL without economic opportunities.
How about this...let's get an alderman who work to improve the education at local schools SO much that the residents will find jobs at firms that offer higher wages (due to higher education) FORCING companies like McD and WM to pay higher wages just to get workers. The REASON they pay low wages is there are so many HS dropouts from Sullivan that they have a huge supply of unskilled people who must accept the low wages because they have no other opportunities.
Now...before I get jumped on...I understand this is an over-simplistic outline of what needs to be done, but history has shown, the legislation of economic regulations does a poor job of accommplishing what it sets out to. The marketplace is a MUCH better driving force for business to do the right thing...just look at the greening of American businesses in the recent years.

Mike - the "Big Box" ordinance is a punitive law aimed at large non-union shops. It does not prevent small businessess from paying slave labor. Don supports initiatives to ensure that citizens of this ward are entitled to a living wage - but the truth is that employers can provide that in non-union shops. We all have to abide by Federal minimum wage laws - if the city of Chicago passed a minimum wage law that applied to all businesses across the board, it would do far more than Joe's half assed ordinance would have achieved. Good thing Daley got the votes to veto it.

Joe doesn't need selective memory. More people watch Chicago Tonight than read this blog. If you watched yesterday, you would say that Moore has no problems with his contributions, which is OBVIOUSLY FALSE. What do they say about people who live in glass houses?

Well, that doesn't matter here, because with less than a week in the campaign, he put Gordon on the defensive. I am, to put it mildy, very disappointed that Gorden didn't stick it to Moore yesterday.

What's really amazing, is that Moore touts himself as an advocate of the 'union' member, the working class, when in reality Moore and his Committeeman, Dave Fagus, with their full support of the Democratic Machines' installing Todd Stroger, Cook County Board President. have cost thousands of Cook County union jobs i.e., Nurses,Care Givers, Service Personnel, Maintenance, etc., probably a sizeable number of 49th Ward residents. It's the union 'Bosses' who are donating the $ to Moore's campaign, not the rank & file worker, they're losing their jobs under Moore's 'Machine' politics as usual. Its laughable that Moore claims to look out for the interest of the 'little guy'! The only interests he's looking out for when it comes to jobs are the union 'Fat Cats', himself and his Committeeman, Dave Fagus. We need a REAL independent, progressive Democratic Alderman! VOTE GORDON!

Here's a simple reason why "big box" is bad policy:

Think about the qualifications of people who typically apply and get hired at big box stores today.

Now, consider the base wages proposed by "big box".

Now, imagine who would apply for these jobs for these wages and get hired for Joe's "living wage". Not the same people, right? Oh, and there's no requirement that the store hires a person supporting a family. The unions, remember, haven't organized the stores and can do nothing about who gets picked for the jobs. Neither can Joe.

They know this. I guess they'd be busy making bigger plans for "someday" while Mr. CollegeGraduate is busy stacking stuff on shelves for $15 bucks an hour. Right.

I wish someone would explain to me how this helps service union rank and file.

The big money connections between the unions and the democratic party at the national level is clear. Look up the major party contributers if you don't believe me. Things that make you go hmmm....

(Second little reason: those automated checkout scanners that you probably don't like start to look a lot more attractive to store suits. The unions and Joe can't do anything about them either.)
