* Someone Steals Labor From Morseland

CAPS Beat 2431 strange crime notes. Is this a index or non-index crime? And how does one steal labor in the first place?

You have an agreement to perform work for an agreed amount of pay and then they don't pay you.

Have had this happen to me- lost paychecks from 3 firms in a row, that went out of biz after soaking their sales forces for 12 hours a day work. Worst thing was that I couldn't collect unemployment, because I was an "independent contractor".

Really sux when you haven't been paid for 2 months to begin with. Employers who do this to people ought to prosecuted , else desperate employees might have to resort to, uh.. summary justice.

Our labor laws don't begin to address this. I don't see any recoginition that the problem exists, and where it is acknowledged, the attitude seems to be that "that's just the risk you take".

Given that more people in crap, low-wage jobs, not only sales but clerical support and other garbage jobs, are working as "contractors" rather than "employees", we can see that there is a huge gap in our basic social safety net, that is not being addressed by any of our political leaders.

Read the news item and it sounds like a customer checked out on a check at Morseland. The loss comes right out of the server's pay, and can be a very nasty hit.

Skipping out on a restaurant check is, IMO, much worse than shoplifting from some big concern, which I DON'T mean to indicate that I approve of either. However, when you shoplift Macy's, the hit is diffused, while when you run out on a restaurant check, one person is taking the whole hit, and that person is at the bottom of the food chain to begin with.

I don't understand why it is the server who has to take the hit, and I think it is a nasty practice to set server up to take the hit out of his tips, instead of the restaurant owner. I have never worked in that business except for 2 horrible days at the age of 18.

I repeat- I do not approve of stealing from anybody ever, but it is worse when you prey on the small and weak.
