Last night I attended the Ceasefire BBQ at Pottawattmonie Park and all I got was this lousy t-shirt.
Okay, sorry for the bad t-shirt joke. Deep down, I really like the Ceasefire program. And I'm grateful to have met the outreach workers that Ceasefire has in Rogers Park. I get riled at the administration aspect of the program.
But the youth outreach workers, like I said, these kids are doing alright.
I'd like to single out two Ceasfire outreach workers. Chinette and Jamelle. In the two years I've been covering the Ceasefire program, these two young adults have always followed what the program is all about. Reaching out to children at risk. That's what these two do.
They're the one's going up to the kids at risk and asking a few questions. They're the one's who provide leadership to the kids they do reach out to who join in the group. They're the one's who work at the public events like last night's BBQ and basketball game. And they're the one's that keep an eye on the troubled one's entering the Ceasefire program that need rehabilitation. They're the one's who always in tandum greet me everytime with the smiling, "Hi Craig!" They're also the one's I stand 'hand-in-hand' with at every Circle Prayer.
On Thursday, Ceasfire will again be out, over at the Mision Cristiana Elim at 1615 West Morse Avenue from 3 p.m. until 7 p.m. I encourage everyone to stop by, grab a hot dog or burger, meet Jamelle and Chinette. Meet some of the kids. Play a game or two with them. And maybe, if you're lucky, you can score a neat t-shirt like I did. With or with the t-shirt, I'll know you will walk away from the event with a smile on your face. Last night I did.
