A 45-year-old Rogers Park man used his T-shirt to hang himself in his jail cell over the weekend after he was arrested for domestic battery, authorities said today.

There's a sad, ugly story behind this.

Are the other members of the family OK? Had the man been in counseling prior to this?

I read stuff like this, and think, some folks are just not made for the particular pressures of family life. What should be a haven in a crazy world becomes the worst place in it.

What a shame.

This is sad. Why did the jail keepers allow him to have something he could hang himself with? It is sad he is dead. But will the family now sue the taxpayers for negligence? This is messy.

""Why did the jail keepers allow him to have something he could hang himself with""

your joking, right? frist of all who saids jail keepers? When do we stop blaming the police for everything.
Should we now strip these guys of everything in a holding tank for one incident? Then the police will be blamed to violating human rights for stripping them.

The man hanged himself, its tragic and no one is too blame. I just can;t figure out how you hang yourself with a t-shirt. not to sound too sick, but you need length for the "rope" and width for the neck.

Dorothy, I can figure out how you could do that, hang yourself with a t-shirt.

I'm not saying you're dumb, but you perhaps have to have a depressive cast of mind to imagine how a person can do this. Having had 5 friends who suicided between 1978 and 1987, I was amazed at how inventive they were at working around all the family members and mental health workers and friends who were trying to protect them.

When someone decides he really wants to die, you will not stop him.

The guy was probably pretty far gone mentally and emotionally when he did this.

north coast: your right ""When someone decides he really wants to die, you will not stop him.""

and that what I was saying, this can't be blamed on police or anyone, its tragic and it happened. Its exhausting to constantly read here about "the blame game"" on the cops or aldermen.

I know many here are cop haters, but when someone hangs, the police know they failed to protect him, and to think it didn't affect the person who found him is a quite a reach, no one is souless out here.

This was domenstic violence, if he was in the frame of mind to kill himself, just what did he do to his family? No one seems to care about his victim(s). Once again the perp is the victim and his victims are never discussed here.

I am sure most of us here, including me, have had family and friends murdered, commit suicide, raped, and beaten up to a pulp, because they are gay. Its wasn't a deep thought about how this gentleman left us, it was just a thought.

on and north coast its ok to call me dumb, I'm so stupid I can't tell its an insult, duhhhhhh

Like I said Dorothy, you are not dumb if you can't figure out how to do that.

The point is,you are not dumb, and you can be very smart and not figure out how a person can turn something seemingly innocious into an instrument of suicide. You are not dumb, you just are not suicidally depressed. You have to have a particular cast of mind to imagine the ways around protective devices a suicidal person can think of.

No insult intended.
