* Shots Fired @ Pratt and Wayne (Updated-X3)

Exclusive Breaking News from the 'Broken Heart'

About 8 p.m. tonight, around 6 shots were fired in what neighbors said was a cross-fire gun battle. Police scanner reports a officer fired and a man was down. A ambulance and fire truck were called to the scene. As for police cars. I think the entire 24th is here.

The lady in the above photo was hauled away by the police as she was screaming and crying. Detectives were scouring the scene for 40 minutes after the shooting. The major news crews were arriving in full force at 8:40 p.m. Pratt is blocked off from Lakewood to Glenwood. Wayne and Glenwood are closed from Farwell to Pratt.

Updated X1: 9:00 p.m. The Tribune reports officer kills one person in shooting.

Updated X2: 9:45 p.m. Police say a gang member was shot after acting strangely at 1321 West Pratt. The strange acting gangbanger allegedly fired at the officer who then fired back, killing the gangbanger.

Updated X3: 10:15 p.m. Crime lab is arriving on scene.

I feel ill. I've called 2 times in last week or so to report hearing gunshots, last night at 12:30AM and the time before I actually found a shell casing on the ground the next morning. We live 1 block from this incident and I am at a complete loss as what to do.

One neighbor was soo pissed. He blamed the blue light camera on Morse for moving the crime to Farwell and Pratt.

...and crime is down in Rogers Park! Thanks for doing such a great job Joe!

what the fuck have you done NO MORE???? somebody just REALLLY DIED IN OUR NEIGHBORHOOD!

I spoke too soon, didn't I?

We were in good shape here on Pratt until this.

This is sickening and scary.

The garbage just keeps being pushed from one part of the neighborhood to the other. Every improvement in one area seems to come at the expense of some other.

The blue lights are worthless. I don't believe they have done anything to reduce crime. Instead, they encourage the police to be lazy. The cameras are watching and the footage isn't viewed till many hours (at least) after the fact. They DON'T replace patrolmen on foot, or at least cruising by in cars.

What the fuck have I done? Everytime I see something going on, I call the police to help keep my neighborhood safe. I am sorry that someone is dead, truly I am. No one needs to die, but our idiot alderman, thinks crime is down, he needs to open his eyes. Second 2nd death from gunfire in what, 3 weeks...it's a disgrace! What have you done Supersam?

Come on neighbors, let's not fight each other right now. Let's see if we can find out what this shooting was about.

SS - I'm curious why Kevin O'Neil kept these prior shootings you mentioned a secret at the CAPS 2431 meeting last night.

I drove into this on my way home from a long day at work. Some welcome. As Craig said, Pratt was detoured coming off of Sheridan. There were a loads of people on the streets and at the corners of the road blocks. No one seemed to know what had happened or what was happening. While making my way around this there were unmarked cruisers coming out of everywhere, and needless to say driving very recklessly. I parked on went on foot, cops wouldn't say anything. Is there any more news on what occurred and what has been happening around here lately? It is awful to feel so unsafe. Imagine if this would have happened near the festival last weekend.

Where Eyes? Channel 7 just said he was a 21 yr old, that proclaimed to be a gang member.

Channel 7.

Police say shots fired on Eastlake were only firecrackers.

But all 'hells breaking loose' north of Howard and in the Jordon School area according to police scanner reports.

Yes,where are you Eyes? On Farwell between Clark and Ashland it is pretty quite right now, I can hear kids outside though. Your news of new gun fire is scary and alarming.

if you shoot at the police, endangering the officer and the community so recklessly, you will most likely be killed by said police officer.

Craig Gernhardt said...

People, please - if you hear shots fired, be sure they're gunshots. And give the 911 operator you're fucking name, you cowards. Stop being anonymous.

Most of these calls tonight are turning out to be fireworks.

Craig, in defense of loud noises, I was in the Marines and even half the time I can't tell if they're fireworks or guns.

Then again, I haven't shot anything in 8 years, but I digress..

ok, how exactly are you supposed to make sure that gunshot-like sound is actually a gunshot? If I'm sitting in my living room and I hear something that sounds like gunfire, should I really run outside to try and determine if it's gunfire, fireworks, or a back-firing car? Or should I just pretend I didn't hear anything?

What can I do? Get rid of cameras? Keep your eye on any "funny business" on your street. Make note of who (complete description), what, when and where. Call 911 and make your report at the CAPS meetings. We've done this and have seen it work. On two separate occassions we've reported new upstart drug activty on our street. We called the police and asked them to come to our house and gave them complete details. We called 911 everytime the dealers we out selling. We made our report at the CAPS meetings. In 6 months time both were off the street. I can only asume that they were arrested or moved on.

Show people that you care about the area. Pick up trash, report buildings that do not cut their grass, fix broken doors etc... New York cleaned up their crime by having a zero tolerance to these so called "minor" issues. This sends a message that neighbors are watching and will do anything to keep the streets safe.

Attend at least a few CAPS walks each year. Simple to do, takes little time and adds some good visibility on the streets. (4) Don't expect the police to clean up crime without your help. Yes, it's their job to do, but it works faster and better when they recieve real community support.

Having crime activity move from concentrated commercial streets onto residential streets will reduce ward crime. When suspicious activity moves onto quiet residentail streets it becomes much more obvious to residents and the police. These people really stand out. It is easier to identify them and it is easier to bust them. And as a resident it really is our duty to track and report this activity. And really just calling 911 is not enough--it shows that you REALLY do not have much discomfort with this activity on YOUR street.

So for those of who really want a safer street -- start doing more about it - the police will be more motivated when we are doing the same.

hey there ...

first of all.. the 'sounds' i heard were NOT on Eastlake. They were west of me.. like i told the police. "The Other side of Sheridan... between Rogers and
possibly as far north as Juneway."

IF the 'sounds' were in quick or rapid succession.. i might have dismissed them as Fireworks. but these were deliberate and paced in such a way i 'thought' they were gun shots.

i heard them @ 9:55pm.

The kid allegedly shot at the police first. If indeed this is the case, he pretty much asked to be shot.

Sorry if I don't grieve for this little piece of scum.
