* Fox News Covers Gooning

Joe Moore's neighborhood spokesperson Katy Hogan ( SSA#24 commissioner/Rogers Park Community Council leader/Loyola Park Advisory Group and whatever else she want to stick her nose in) got on the Fox news channel last night to warn the neighbors about the recent gooning attack first reported here. Just two years ago Michael James did the same thing on Channel 5.

For these two to keep parading themselves in front of the media as spokespersons on the Gooning issue makes you wonder. What makes them the experts on gooning? Where's Joe Moore? And where were any of these three the last time the community had to go to court for the prosecution in the 2004 goonings on Lunt? And if they're doing something about it, why does it keep reoccurring?

According to Katy Hogan, you've gotta look tough to live in Rogers Park. Otherwise, you may be gooned.

Sorry Craig, but any large media exposure is better than none on this issue, if for no other reason than to warn people in the area who don't read this blog, or otherwise are not aware of the problem. Also, it adds pressure to the police, the commuinty at-large and the Alderman to do something. I applaud Katy for having the courage to show her face and discuss this absurd violence.

Hey Katy, what urban neighborhood issues has the community been dealing with for several years now? Be specific.

Foie Gras doesn't count.

I'm a little disappointed in Pro Gun hiding his identity. Although, it does go to show you - even those you think aren't afraid, really are.

Craig,

I'm new to your site. Forgive my ignorance. When these gooners are caught and get court dates, do you announce when and where it happens? I would like to help organize my neighbors to appear as support for the community.

How do you get this information in the first place? I'd like to change this black vs. white (only white people care) perception on neighborhood violence and get a diverse group of citizens to start attending CAPS and court dates. I'm sure I sound idealistic, but, hey, how else do we push forward?

ProGun has small children to protect Craig. I would cut him slack there. Not everyone can be as brave/crazy as some of us. ;o)

Neocynic- sounds like a great idea and if you have ideas on how to accomplish that, I think many would like to hear about them.

and yes, Craig often posts court dates etc... on the blog.

I've followed these gooning since the beginning. I'll post court dates here when I get them from either the victim or police.

We go as a group, when the case is announced, the group stands up to show support for the case.

If there is a continuance like in the Herron Brothers, we keep showing up until a verdict is reached. Last time the first appearance, 50 neighbors showed. By the fifth appearance, we were down to a half dozen neighbors. It's very time consuming. And watching the system in action can be heartbreaking at times.

No sleep, welcoming my in-laws and cousins, cooking dinner and life in general had me trepid.
It was more vanity than fear,
still have not showered.
Long lines this morning for the bathroom in general.
I have no problem testifing in court if it comes to that, talking to Fox with no shower no shave they can look at the back of my head.

Hi honey how was your day yes dinner at 5:55 and oh yeah Fox news will be here at 6.
They did the interview with my in-laws, wife and childern watching.
Welcome to Chicago, please excuse me from the table while I describe this horrible event I witnessed last night.

Does anyone know who he was? I was coming home right before it happened, and my neighbor was leaving as I was walking in. I'm afraid it was him... I actually saw a couple of shady people walking around the area, but then saw a large group of young adults walk by them so they turned around and kept walking and took the opportunity to run quickly inside my building. I feel pretty lucky now, especially since I was drinking a little bit.

Craig thanks again for the tip about the camera.
It is in the details that moved this case closer to being proscuted.
What Caps and elected officials ask us to do.
Call 911 Check
File police report Check
Discuss with friends and neighbors to find out there is a rise in attacks Check
Call property management to verify attack caught on tape Check.
Testify in Court pending.

Buy Craig a beverage of his choice at the Festival pending.

Dunk a Craig or Joe for charity pending.
Speaking of charity.

Wonder how much the last victim will shell out for medical bills for this last attack.

Excuse me, can someone please fill me in on some details?

Why are Katy Hogan and Michael James owners of Hartland suddenly responsible for gooning in the community? If something happens on the parkway in front of my house am I responsible for it too? Should I be fencing off the public sidewalk? If a peace flag doesn't keep the peace, should I also remove my US flag because there are people out there who can't respect it?

It seems to me that Hogan and James just voiced their opinions, just like many people voice their opinions on this blog.

What I can't understand is the virulent hate factor for these people who have been good neighbors to the community. I know from this blog that Joe Moore eats at Heartland. Does this taint the restaurant so badly for you Craig? Well fine, find another place to eat. There are lots of them.

I don't see how hammering Hogan and James is going to make this community better.

I'd rather eat at a soup kitchen, much beter clientele!

Better question to ask yourself. Why are Katy and Michael enabling the gooning by keeping things as Status Quo? Why is it these so-called good business owners always featured when a gooning happens.

Seems to be a pattern here. Like those white t-shirt guys hanging in front of Soo Liquors and Golden Mini-Mart.

Like I said. Better question to ask yourself. Why are Katy and Michael enabling the goonings by keeping things as Status Quo?

I'm very confused. How are they enabling gooning? Are they any different than other business owners? It sounds to me your cheezed off because they got the media attention and you didn't. You seem to feature them when goonings happen. You did it days before the TV crews arrived. Maybe they just make a better interview than you?

What exactly are you insinuating?

Craig, in all fairness, we can't blame Heartland for this.

Heartland just happens to be sitting very near the Rider Bldg, from whence comes all the garbage in the surrounding area. It's not their fault they happen to be very near the slummiest building in the area.

Just because Katy and Michael are Moore supporters is no reason to blame them for things they have no control over. They're restaurant owners, not cops. And while the food is mediocre at best, the gift shop is charming.

Get that reeking sump at 1345 W Lunt/1340 W Morse vacated and redeveloped, and we will see at least a small dent in the problems in the area. Get that shack on Greenview vacated, and more problems will go away- just as long as the ex-cons and other riffraff don't find another willing slumlord in the area.

northcoast, in all fairness, Craig can and does blame the Heartland for things they didn't do. Just like he blames lots of people for things they didn't do.

The damaging aspect to this is less that this one incident is thrown at Michael and Katy, it's that now, everyone in the neighborhood has to wonder if they will get the same treatment. Every business owner has to wonder if tomorrow will be their day to be subjected to Craig's truth-free ream job. Not only do Michael and Katy have to suffer the effects of the criminals near their homes and businesses, but on top of it, they have to suffer Craig's insane smear job and blaming.

And although this one single time you criticize him for his lack of truth, you usually support and enable his bullshit.

Good question.

Since he is the evidently the spokesperson on gooning in Rogers Park and has positioned the Heartland as the only viable business making a contribution to this community we are waiting for Michael James to announce a benefit for the victims of goonings who do not have medical insurance. This might actually tempt us into exchanging hard earned money for a meal at the Heartland.

(That doesn't mean we actually have to eat it, however)

Gay Chicago Magazine said...

Rebecca, if you care so much, organize your own benefit. Or is bitching and feeling superior all you're good for? What's your contribution?

Makes me wonder why Katy and Michael are Joe Moore supporters! Katy? Mike?

I saw that sign in the Heartland window and it made me sick of my stomach! I know those business owners continuously hear and see their customers and employees get robbed and beaten up by neighborhood trash.
