Hi Craig,
Hope you’re doing well. Just wanted to let you know that there were also shots fired by my place (Greenleaf and Paulina) around 4:40 AM this morning. I called the cops and I saw them driving by a few minutes later, but I’m sure they didn’t find anything. It’s a really gun-happy summer we’re having, isn’t it?
All the best,
Chuck

Yesterday morning at 12:40 AM I heard 3 gun shots very close to where I live on 1500 block of W. Estes. Called 911 and didn't hear any more activity. Gooning - Gun Fights! Where is the outrage and action from our political leaders when real problems happen in OUR Community?
Joe on Estes
Amen, Joe! You're only one street north of me-- I'm in the 1600 block of W. Greenleaf, and am surprised I didn't hear those as well.
I just moved to Rogers Park, and I was wondering if people had some community groups they could recommend. I would like to get involved to make a positive difference in our neighborhood.
A shot heard in the vicinity of the 1500 block of Estes, coming from Greenview area around 1:30 a.m. Also, street lights have been out on and off for last month or so between Chase and about Greenleaf.
I saw notices on Greenleaf of a block party this Saturday. Unclear as to who is organizing it but two blocks of Greenleaf, from Sheridan to Greenview will be blocked off for a block barbecue. I believe the details are listed on RogersPark.com.
We did this in the summer of 2004 with great success. Great way to meet your neighbors, reach out to the kids and be a positive presence.
There was no outrage or action from our political leaders in 2004 either. Indeed frustrating! It took a handle of neighbors efforts to organize Rogers Park Neighbors, who worked tirelessly that summer to address the violence.
geekgerl, There are many groups to join. If you like gardening-there is the Rogers Park Garden Group. CAPs is also another way to get involved. rogerspark.com lists a number of community groups also...
So Craig, can't you blame the Heartland Cafe for this Too?
Does anyone know what's up with those two single-family homes that are between the Morningside Apts and JB Albertos. They're obviously abandoned (or else vampires with no gardening skills live there). Have they been like that long?
I've seen people enter and leave one of those two houses, but I have no idea if they are owners, or renters, or what. I don't think the houses are abandoned.
Too bad they're not more vested in keeping their house in a presentable state. There should be a law against keeping your property in that condition.
Those two homes are not occupied. Every now and then someone rents them out but not lately. I wish the city would buy both lots and put in a parking lot. Or retail/condo development.
I'll happily take the retail/ condo development but please, please, please, no more big stretches of asphalt.
There is nothing that wrecks the appearance of a city street like a parking lot.
All parking should be behind buildings, underground, or over the retail.
I didn't think that they were occupied, especially since they're usually dark at night, and both buildings have padlocks on their fence gates.
Is there any way to get the ball rolling on getting those buildings razed and something better put in? That would definitely be a step in the right direction in getting Morse cleaned up.
Natas aka Brettly shut the hell up. Go away. Go back to kindergarten. Child.
Or at least put up for sale? Neither building is particularly ugly in its design, if they were cleaned up they could both be beautiful.
i grew up in rogers park and after being away for years, i'm about to close on a condo near farwell and sheridan and now i'm quite concerned. i had no idea the area was so bad now. it makes me sad. i hope that things change. i will keep an eye on this blog and check out what i can do in my "new/old" community. i hope positivity wins out.
:)
James-
I've lived in RP now for a year, and while I have seen some things are shady, but if you take the normal precautions, like with any other big city, you should be fine. Just don't go out in the middle of the night.
