* Fat Wet Hole

I thought I'd share the lyrics to the Roundeye song Brettly dedicated to me on Saturday at the Glenwood Arts Fest. It goes like this.

She lay there on the slab silent in repose
her mouth was open her eyes were closed
she was the sweetest thing you'd ever seen
the perfect woman to fufill craigs fantasies

Craig! is a Necro, a Necropheliac
Craig! is a necro, it was more than just an act
Craig! is a necro, he's fucked in the Head
Craig! is a necro, he loves to fuck the dead

She lay there on the slab silent in repose
her mouth was open her eyes were closed
she was the sweetest thing you'd ever seen
the perfect slut to fufill craigs fantasies

BLOGNOTES: Who booked this act? I hope no children were listening while this song was being played. This sure doesn't sound like family friendly music to me.

No, it wasn't family friendly at all. Where were the police during this public display? Isn't there a public decency act effective in Chicago? There was when Lenny Bruce played here a few decades ago. Doesn't the Glenwood Arts Fair have a set of acceptability standards its performers must meet in order to be paid? Even if they weren't supposed to be paid, aren't there certain standards of public decency and family oriented fare that are explicitly demanded by the organizational body in order to be allowed to perform at all? Who organized this affair? What are they saying about this performance? Were there other songs as repulsive as this one by this artist? By other artists? Is this the kind of entertainment that the organizers of these festivals support and will continue to support? Is this the kind of entertainment that will be presented in the future? If so, then do they honestly expect families (read concerned/involved parents) to attend? That was repugnant and, hopefully, will never be repeated but in the meantime I'm still asking the question: Where were the police?

- PEACE -

On the the song: It's totally disgusting. My family was at the festival and we paid attention to the music from the stage we sat next to. I would have been appalled if my kids had heard this.

Call it "politically correct" if you want, but all of us need to stop accepting and condoning men and their music groups who objectify women, especially using sex. These lyrics are in the same category of abuse seen in that particular arena of rap music that habitually demeans women and robs them of their human dignity, promotes an attitude that violence against women is cool, and which promotes violence in general.

On the performance at the Glenwood Arts Festival: It would be hard, and in fact not desirable, for the festival organizers to do a detailed screening of every performer's material. However adopting a policy on standards regarding what kind of language is acceptable to be blasted from the stage is easy. This crap is unacceptable in our community and should not have been promoted.

The band Roundeye has a 1st Amendment right to sing/perform whatever they want. Similarly, the Glenwood Festival organizers have a right to state what their standards are and to reject performances that are in such bad taste. This group has demonstrated that it should not be invited to the festival next year.

honestly, you are pulling my leg, right? you don't really think the cops can/would/should arrest a performer for this, do you?
no, there is no provision that tax funded programs must be kiddie friendly. there are still a few freedoms left that the bushies haven't gotten to yet.

Did this band really get paid for this high school crap?

Wonder what those SSA#24 are thinking? Or are they sitting over coffee and mooched cigarettes laughing?

What about these 'clubs'??? Some people sit on every 'club' in their hood, some get payment too. What about a finger wagging from Joe at them? Not a chance.

Mo Cahill said about her family on the Democratic Underground Network....> "Well, i am hoping that sending troubled child and fucked up boyfriend packing will help us get a better grip on 2 younger sibs. 16 y.o. is doing the usual 16 yo things, a little drinking, a little dope smoking, some cough medicine, dropping out of school, being an ass to his little sister."

This is how Mo raises her children. Sounds like she's got bigger issues to deal with than what's on this blog. Maybe Mo oughta focus more of her attention at home?

Oh, Mo/been there. There you go again. You wrote, "there is no provision that tax funded programs must be kiddie friendly. there are still a few freedoms left that the bushies haven't gotten to yet."

Your continual "us versus them" and "Democrat versus Republican" ranting to protect the status quo is bankrupt reasoning.

This issue is about community standards, not individual rights. The musicians(?) have a right to perform whatever they please. We have a right to decide what we like and don't, and what we will and will not support.

Guess what? You weren't there, but we all met last night in Loyola Park to watch the moon eclipse. We took a democratic vote, we were Dems, Repubs, Greens, and more. Hundreds of us raised our back-to-school hot dogs up high in favor of one motion. We voted unanimously to ban this kind of music at community festivals! We say No More, Mo. No More.

that is totally uncalled for.

Fargo Woman said...

Nope, not pulling your leg . . . not a busie either. I'm just frustrated at their obvious lack - whether its lack of power to enforce laws covering public decency or lack of interest in doing so.

well, mr harrington, you may have taken a vote, but that does not make you a duly constituted government body. it certainly does not make you one that is empowered to overturn the first amendment to the constitution. it does not surprise me that you would vote to do so, nor does it surprise me that you would think you could.

and fargo- you should read up on lenny bruce. although he died before his case made it to the supreme court, his co-defendant won.

Craig Gernhardt said...

So, let me get this straight Mo. You cheer on and encourage other bloggers to post worse information that is clearly false about me, and when I print the truth about you - you get bent out of shape and say this is uncalled for.

Hypocrite.

Craig Gernhardt said...

Mo, wasn't it you that wanted lawsuit and votes overturned against Bush in 2000 (Florida) and 2004 (Ohio).

I'll dig those quotes up for the public to see too.

Hypocrite.

been there said...

what does that have to do with other bloggers?

been there said...

please do dig that up. maybe if people re-read it a few times they will understand what i was saying. this is the reason that alberto gonzales resigned. people who are concerned about election theft do need to understand it so they do not get stampeded into bad election laws, meant to disenfranchise voters, not to protect them.

Wouldn't the side by side alderman/Gernhart baseball dunking tank idea (to raise money for the good cause of each man's choice) have been a much better way to deal with such sentiments?

True, that would have required a bit of non-conformity, humility, and a sense of humor. Oh well. There's always next year.

Regarding the moronic song: I believe the author/performer is a former (I hope) drug addict and convict. Consider the source and ignore him.

Craig, thanks for the publicity on your blog. I never realized how many people actually read it who don't like you.

We've gotten a slew of emails thanking us for blasting you, and a couple of extremely nice offers to play at some of the biggest venues in the city because of the controversy you are "creating"
about one song. Who knows, we might even sign our record deal now, so thanks for helping us along. Many thanks.

Now, we are a punk band, and punk bands tend to be controversial via lyrics, stage show, etc. and I think we did our job at bringing people to the fest and keeping people at the stage we played at for the duration of our set. You even made a note of Kevin dancing his ass off during it.

Now for the family aspect of it - how many parents are really going to let their little children sit through a loud and obnoxious punk band?

A portion of The fest is family friendly, that's why there are the kid fest tents, but it's open to all walks of life, as the fest had something for everyone, kids, teens, adults, everyone.

And just because a member of our act is an EX convict/drug user, that would mean he's turned his life around, cleaned up his act and moved forward.
If it were not for this band member, this band would have never been on the Vans Warped Tour, Opened for the bigger local and national acts both here in Chicago and through out the midwest and east coast.
So you can just drop that one there.
Let thee without sin cast the first stone.

Here - the main reason for the blast, Craig compared one of our members to a nazi hateblogger in the Rogers Park blog circle without basis or knowledge of who this supposed blogger is, which resulted in him getting jumped and having to defend himself by someone who read craigs blog, and our member had to physically defend himself because of your blog.

All Craig would have had to do was apologize for the incorrect information that he provided and the whole thing would have been dropped and left alone. But he did not, and one of our members had to suffer because of him.

And you Craig bring up artistic control - what the fest is supposed say we'll take art from one artist but not another? isn't that a shot at the 1st ammendment?

We've gotten more positive feed back from the people who attended, a hundreds of people signing up on our email list the day of our show, and gave away about 1000 cd's during and after our set of people who liked what we did.

So all we say to the fest attendees is thanks, and a bigger thanks to you Craig for blowing this up and getting us the publicity a band wants/needs/desires.

Thanks Craig! Happy Tuesday!

That Roundeye band is craaaaazee. The drummer viciously sank his teeth and devoured a live pigeon on stage and didn't miss a beat.

i dont agree with them either,
but id rather err on having a fight and a free discussion,

ofcourse if the comments are just redundant and annoying, i guess we do have to maintain some order
and i know that comments have to be pretty screwed up for you to remove them

You guys are still a bunch of sickos in my book coming up with a song like that. Good luck selling punk to the mainstream. :o)

If Glenwood Arts has concerns about attracting children to its Theater and Fest, it may want to discourage these sorts of midday slams of bad taste and crude commentary. As they say, "mean people suck. . ." I will let some with more vivid imaginations replace the dots. We really need to overwhelm the lame and vindictive.

Maybe a few of us should volunteer for next years event. Perhaps, the Fest will be in better taste, attract more credible artists and provide parents with a bit more protection. A little nudity or skin at an appropriate moment is one thing; using detailed vulgar terms about necrophilia in a public forum geared to attract children disturbs the peace.

Chicago Uber X Driver said...

^^^ So wait a minute -- you "roundeye" folks mean to tell us that your best hopes for signing a record deal rest not on the quality of your stage or musical performance, but on the publicity from a blogger nobody outside of the far north side of Chicago has ever heard of or cares about? Wow. Good luck with that record deal, guys! But I wouldn't start spending those millions just yet.

Timing is everything. Placement is, as well. Someone probably should have asked, who actually showed up and saw kids in the vicinity of R-E's necrophilia set? What time did they play? Did someone get a good photo of KC doing the Sunshine Dance or is this a rumor?

It is disappointing to hear that someone in the band was allegedly buffalo-ed over some post. However, sometimes it is difficult 'to know' fact from fiction, when people are upset with each other. Hearsay is always secondhand and unfortunately unreliable if you don't know the source.

What a bunch of whiners ! I took a freinds advice on coming here to blog. She was right. You guys don't know your ass. You're all so easily sidetrcked by the next guy. Threatened that they may prove they are more clever than you. So self serving. You all can't even notice your asses growing beyond the scope of your politics.

I was paid pretty well for that gig, then bought some art, a little food and drink and gave it right back to the festival. That is where it is at. NUTJOBS !

Take your blinders off and realize there is more to an idea than your own take on it. Really now. If brains were firearms, you'd all be in jail for public endangerment.

Craig, if Joe bugs you this much, run for fucking aldermen. Otherwise, you are nothing more than somewhat provocative to non thinkers.

Harrington. Who are you to judge what is and is not in good taste?
The song in question is about a necrophiliac. It is in no way condoning the behavior. It is simply telling the story in graphic detail. Like a film, script or books. Shall we do away with all that you think is indecent.
Book burning at Harringtons place. BYOB.

We voted? who michael, the entire 10 of you?

Woo Hoo! 10 or so folks don't like us or want us back.

And Michael you are not on the planning committee. Do you want to come to every GAAF meeting, and then, Work all weekend long for the fest?

I don't think so!

I'm soooooo hurt.

what about the crowd we had to watch us, the people who came out to see us, seems like we had more for us there than against us, and we did our job, by keeping those people happy and occupied at the fest for our set.

And the song was only one song which was about a minute and a half long in a 14 song set.

And wait, it's OK for Craig to refer to one of our band members as a nazi hate blogger?

Call him a homophobic person?

Disrespect a benefit that one of our members and his girlfriend put together to help the AIDS chicago marathon training program - taking bits and pieces of our bands blog to suit his needs and skip the true facts of the benefit?

Displaying his picture so that people verbally and physically attack him for something he did not do so that he has to deal with the whirlwind of crap for months that Craig incorrectly posted?

So if that's the worst that a person/band does to your beloved Craig for all the crap he has caused, deal with it and move on.

sparky said...

and what really cracks me up?
the adults didn't 'hear' the lyrics until they were posted here, but they were worried about the children hearing them.
even if the children heard them, they most certainly didn't understand them, so, net/net.....
they may have been sung in urdu for all it matters

Amy said...

I'm with Sparky on this -- if Roundeye is even remotely competent as a punk band, the lyrics were shouted with such speed and fury that individual words probably would have been unintelligible to passerby, or would have been drowned out by the guitars anyway. "The children" were in no danger (except, perhaps, for their eardrums).

My all time favorite Necropheliac song is Cold Ethyl.

Much better lyrics and creative writing style. And it's got a good beat and you can dance to it.

I like the way Rebecca thinks. I can think of 2-3 other guys, and at least one female, that we could add to the list. Then see who can raise the most money for their charity.

I just think the dunking tank would have been a lot more interesting and fun for all. Acts like yours are a dime a dozen.

A "punk band" that wastes twenty plus paragraphs on a blog babbling about some pie in the sky career development? Oh for the days when your little pals would have called you sellout just before kicking your head in for doing that. Kids today. No spunk.

Brettly has done alot for Rogers Park. That is a fact.

Harrington just stands back and tosses complaints. Brettly books hundreds of bands a month. He develops artists.

Like his music or not, his money is
where his mouth is.

Last time my band played Redline we had a small crowd. We weren't expecting to see a dime.

Brettly comped each memeber of our band a meal and gave us each a $20.

The DevCorp North page for the festival lists the members of the organizing committee. I'd direct questions about the screening and selection of performers to them. If their response isn't adequate, the same site lists sponsors, some of whom might be surprised at what they were sponsoring.
