Sent to me by a very concerned and frightened student who wants the public to know about this. You'd think by now Loyola would just send me this information directly instead of having worried students forwarding me the 411.
On Saturday morning, August 25, at approximately 4:45 a.m., three Loyola University Chicago students were robbed at gunpoint on North Shore Beach (6700 N). Any information regarding this incident should be reported to the Chicago Police by calling 311 or to Loyola Campus Safety at 773.508.6039.
Please note that Chicago Park District beaches and parks close at 11 p.m. Everyone is encouraged to be cautious after dark and to avoid parks and beaches after they are closed.
The Campus Safety Department urges you to be aware of your surroundings and to always travel on well-lit, well-populated streets. Here are some other safety tips:
* Be aware of any persons or vehicles that may be watching or following you.
* Be alert to suspicious people asking you for cigarettes, directions, or for the time.
* Avoid carrying purses or bags that are visible to others. Place your wallet, cell phone, keys and other valuables in the inside pockets of your clothing.
* Avoid carrying an excessive amount of currency and/or credit cards.
Thank you.

Not possible. Super Joe has eradicated crime from our community. I read the flyers.
As always with the beginning of the school year at Loyola, our neighborhood thugs congregate near the campus. It is very easy pickings for these dogs. It gets so bad that you can bet all cars from 24 will be placed around the campus to slow down the carnage this weekend. Nothing new, just normal behavior from our disenfranchised citizens.
I like the humour in some of the advice given by the Campus Security Dept, as in point no 3: "Avoid carrying purses or bags that are visible to others. " REALLY!!! And, "Place your wallet, cellphone, keys, and other valuables in the inside pockets of your clothing." Very funny, that.
I mean, do you see any female student, or even male, wearing anything that has an inside pocket?
Is there a woman's suit jacket or coat that has inside pockets sufficient for wallet, cell, and keys? I keep looking for it. I'd love to get that stuff out of my purse. Even a tummy pack can be cut off you from behind. I also don't see anymore of those great little shoulder-strap wallets you can hang around your neck under your clothing while carrying a few bucks within easy reach.
Great advice.
fantastic. b/c of the shitty care that this area receives, i already am hesitant to go outside, if only b/c it all just grosses me out. i hate the slimy hookers, the scary as shit drug dealers, the smelly and nasty drunk beggars. the general shit smell of RP.
of course, i wouldn't be outside at that time anyways, for that reason and others, like it's really early and I'm usually trying to sleep. of course, it used to be that you could go outside at any time, be it day or night, but around here, thats when all the "interesting" people are out. night equals bad, especially in chicago, and especially especially around here.
i hate all politicos that only get into office for the glory and the money. it should be illegal. oh wait, it is. only no one gives a shit. b/c, unfortunately, most politicos are like moore, and few and far between are the honest and hardworking. oh wait, i don't think theres any. look at the moron who is currently in power over all of america. look at what he's done with this country. i don't want to move out of iraq, and goddamit, i don't care how many people die, i will not budge b/c i don't want to! no! (said in a whiney spoiled 3 year old). i hate him and all politicians who don't do jack shit but make themselves richer, and sit idly by as the country completely falls into ruins.
all closing parks at night means that you're technically on your own, that anything that happens to you, like it did to those loyola students, is your own fault. you chose to disregard the rules, so there you go. it's an easy way out for the law "enforcers" to get out of having to do anything. it's not like criminals are going to actually stay out of the park just b/c it's closed. i'm sure it's actually quite the opposite. they know that no one is going to be policing the park, so non-criminals who will be in the park, will be easy targets.
and i totally agree that putting in a park in the place of the TIF building on Sheridan, will just draw more bums, which loyola has plenty of already, drug dealers, and random filth. which loyola also has plenty of too. using a garbage can is just beyond many people. i hate people.
hey i wish this was a safe enough place where this wouldnt happen
but it isnt,
that is why i went to u of i
now it sure isnt as cheap as it used to be, but it sure is alot safer for kids to run around being kids,
and kids being kids shouldnt be robbed ofcourse,
im a much larger fan of colleges like u of i cuz they are state supported and should be way more funded than they used to be,
and usually they are safer,
but i want loyola to do well, cuz hey im selfish and i live here, so heres to the day when kids can be kids in the middle of the night without worrying about thugs out there
or atleast we should arm them appropriately,
Shame on you! My Tommy Boy is the only one of you internets boys who has the courage to say those Loyola brats had it coming! Same as those girls who dress up like whores and then complain when they get the wrong kind of attention!
Shame on you all!
Big kisses,
Mrs. W.
"you'd think Loyola would just send this to me" ya, craig, since your blog is SO positive and never bashes anything in Rogers Park. Why would they go out of their way to send you this information regarding student safety? It has nothing to do with your complaints (I think you call it a "blog"). I'm becoming a real hater and you're making it easy. PLEASE, I beg you, at least dig up some neutral news.
We can mope about an isolated act, but I saw students get away with more without a gun in the north suburbs while staff could not do a thing.
No one wants to test whether the gun is real, but a few of those Mossers may have had fluorescent removable ends on them.
What in the heck were they doing on the beach at 4:45 AM? Did they assume nobody else was going to be hanging out there then? Come on, please.
The beaches have activity on them all night long during summer; never mind the 11:00 PM closing signs. The whole night is prime time for those who want to swim without the lifeguards bugging them, who want to have alcohol bashes, etc., as well as those looking for victims.
I'm not saying that people shouldn't be able to hang out, but a lot of common sense is needed.
folks, the bad guys come out at night. it has ever been thus. and colleges attract predators. not saying it is ok. just saying that anyone wishing for the good old days when it was safe is lost in a nostalgic haze, or something. (if you have never read "the devil in the white city" treat yourself. you will never think of the "good old days" the same way.)
and north coast, for once i agree with you. women's clothes are second class citizens clothes. i hate the skimpy pockets, the stupid dinky "hardware", zippers, etc, and i hate the whole exposure thing they do. blue jeans for me.

Your point is certainly valid, yet as a working person with dogs I was often in the park at that hour if not earlier giving my dogs their morning walk.
I have been in that park between the hours of 2 am to 7 am. One thing that always seems to be a consistent presence is a cop car parked in the grass or on the beach between Farwell and Pratt. The driver of the car is always sleeping. Always!!!! There is often a squad car or two by the field house...same story!!!
Now the presence of a squad car on Pratt probably wouldn't have been a benefit to someone on North Shore, but if there is going to be a police presence in our parks I would certainly hope that they could stay awake. If they are on a break, then they have no business there.
If they are on a break, then they have no business there
Since when do you dictate where a car can take a personal, lunch, or finish paper. Get a life, RPR.
I say that, not because I am against breaks or want to dictate cop behavior, but you must admit that a cop presence asleep in a crime ridden area, presents a negative image.
Ever gone to a store, needing sales assistance, and been ignored by two associates chatting about their boyfriends? Ever gone to a checkout to see the register person ignoring customers to socialize with friends or whatever, meanwhile ignoring you?
If these guys are legitimately on break, then they need to go back to headquarters or go to a shop or restaurant, where they can snooze without question.
To take a snooze break in a public place is asking for public outrage, especially in a neighborhood that already has it's hands full in respect to crime.
When I worked in retail we were expected to take our breaks off the floor...for the same reason. I expect our men in blue to do the same.
