Look, someone's head is bobbing up and down in the lake. Call for help! Someone's drowning!
The rescue helicopter arrives on scene to do a search.
Local swimmer Peggy comes out of the nice cool water with her greens fins.
The Chicago fire department is waiting for Peggy to come a shore.
Peggy laughs at the whole ordeal.
The police talk with Peggy.
BLOGNOTES: A week after the death of Tom Long, everyone is on edge, as was the case last evening.
Our local swimmer Peggy went out for a swim with her green fins and someone must have thought she was drowning.
But Peggy was okay. Heck, Peggy was out enjoying a nearly 90 degree day in lake Michigan.
Still, that didn't stop five police cars, a couple of bike patrols officers, four fire emergency vehicles, a ambulance and of course, the fire department helicopter to come searching for Peggy and her green fins in the waters of Lake Michigan.
I wonder how much money this whole little episode cost the tax-payers. Just the flying bird alone has to cost a pretty penny. Not to mention what looked like a quarter of the 24th district police department on duty at the time. Oh, and the fire department personal and equipment. Any guesses how much this cost the tax-payers? All this for Peggy and her green fins.

yes, this endeavor was probably expensive. but i'd rather see a false (and highly responsive) rescue then a slow or nonexistent rescue.
Kudos to the CPD for another job well done. If they didn't perform to the level that they did when this occured, all the naysayers would be fingerpointing as they usually do.
OFF TOPIC -- Thanks for the note on my blog, Craig. I responded to your note there.
Craig, do you have a real job? Just curious. Or are you retired?
you see, CPD can't win! they responded to a call of person drowning, that's how it was dispatched to CFD and CPD! There's a big response and it turns it it's nothing, as are 90% of the jobs police have to deal with(atleast in Rogers Park). People will call 911 for stupid things such as this! Had CPD blew the call off and it was bonafied, oh boy would the media salivate over that story! The news would be out there interviewing some RPR's and they would be saying, "typical police response, I always see them standing around eating donuts."

As they say in the police business, that's a big 10-4.
Seriously people, anyone could see, Peggy was wearing fins, she knew what she was doing.
What would you have preferred them to do, wait until we had another tragedy? Perhaps with each of your critisisms you could include a positive suggestion. It is easy to find fault, not so easy to find solutuons.
Cost analysis.
lifeguards vs. police, ambulance, firefighters, scuba team, and the helicopter every once in a while?
You have to be kidding me. Your not actually complaining about the response are you? What would YOU have the CPD do? One man in a rowboat go out there to save her? And as far as knowing that she was OK, that she had her green fins, how would anybody know that unless they were driving a submarine? I get it. Your trying be funny.
While I am thrilled the Fall swimmer is safe maybe she should think about Tom Long. Maybe she should think about joing the YMCA or using the Chicago Park District Pools that are open to the public year round and are FREE!
And Yes Kudos to the Police and Fire Teams that responded in a timely manner!

Your kidding right? Don't swim in the lake anymore everyone, it's too dangerous!
People have been swimming (and drowning)in the lake long before the Y. What happened to Tom was truly a tragedy, but don't blame the swimmer, don't blame the response teams. Blame the person that started it by making the 911 call, and even then tread lightly. I'd rather have someone call when I'm not in trouble then to not have someone call at all.
Take this for what it is, a fun show to watch where for once no one was hurt, shot, beat, kicked, raped, sold, or killed. Enjoy the show for a change, chuckle a little. No harm, no foul.
