* Local Swimmer Drowns @ Jarvis Beach (Updated 5X)

A 'Broken Heart' Exclusive

What a time to be Joe Citizen. I went out without the camera and missed capturing a air/sea rescue mission on Lake Michigan. The Chicago Police Scuba team, a helicopter and the police boat were all on scene. The helicopter landed on the beach for a short time. This was around 5:55 p.m. tonight.

Update #1: A rescue it is. They pulled a man out of the water. Witnesses say he was real blue in color and taken away on a stretcher to the hospital. The man called a friend to go swimming. When his friend arrived, the rescue was already under way. I'm told by people on the beach - he swims regularly in the area. I've got a name but I'm holding it back until those stuffy officials want to give a official comment.

Update #2: Above photos courtesy Bill Morton.

Update #3: 49 year old Tom 'Tommy' Long of the 1800 block of West Touhy was pronounced dead at St Francis Hospital in Evanston at 7:22 p.m., according to the Cook County medical examiner's office.

Update #4: Channel 5 reports.

Update #5: What the other Rogers Park blogs are saying and showing.

Blog Editorial by Tom Mannis.

I went over and watched until we all got showered in sand from the helicopter. Another onlooker said that someone drowned. You could see the divers in the water. There were numerous cops and other personnel. It was between Jarvis and Fargo. I hope you are right about it being a rescue.

Actually it may be a rescue because I can still hear the helicopter.

Just heard on the scanner that they did find someone who didn't survive. I did get photo's from Howard Beach.

There are some photo's on my blog at http://my-dreamtime.blogspot.com. They aren't very good, but feel free to lift them.

I am still not sure what happened herE but one of the first and foremost lessons in swimming - NEVER, NEVER, NEVER, NEVER,NEVER SWIM ALONE!!!!!!!!

I hope the victim survives.

Failing Physical Education in the Chicago Public Schools is at an all time high and the primary reason kids don't pass is they won't dress for gym. This means wearing a white t-shirt and gym shorts that are the school color. The second reason kids fail Phys. Ed. is because they won't put on swim suits and get in the pool.

KNOWING HOW TO SWIM IS A LIFE SAVING SKILL AND THE LIFE YOU SAVE MAY BE YOUR OWN!!!!

Are you listening to the scanner? Man shot in face at Fargo and Winchester. FYI.

Question: Where in Rogers Park can kids go to swim in a pool? Which school in Rogers Park even offers this in their curriculum?

Your statement makes it sound as though their lack of experience and expertise in physical education, swimming in particular, is the kids' fault.

Is that what you really mean to say?

How about lifeguards on Jarvis Beach for a solution?

How about lifeguards on every beach?

If this saved one life, wouldn't it be worth it?

Yes, let's have liv=feguards 24/7. We need to protect people from themselves. I also think a 12 chain link fence with barbed wire around the lake to prevent people from jumping in would be good too. Then we can have the snipers on the highrises shoot people who dare go in the lake. After all we are their nannies.

Maybe Darwin was right? Cull the idiots.

Oh Fargo woman really where do you go and what do you do?
Physical Education is part of the high school curriculum!
There is a pool at Sullivan High School ( Open for family swims) uh.....Mather High School (open for family swim, life guard training, and swimming for the disabled!)
You can go to these schools and SWIM for free!
Senn High School has a nice pool. Also open to the public, Amundsen,.....but we are really out of RP now.

The beaches close on Labor Day. This schedule hasn't changed in years.
If there is no lifeguard and a sign saying beaches closed well, oh yes, that lesson was a reading lesson in about the third grade!

AND NO! Fargo Woman I am not talking about 'lack of experience' I am talking about a wonderful curriculum that encourages physical activity but the teachers wants kids safe so they(kids) are required to be in uniform)!
And it is the kids who REFUSE to put their uniform on!
Ask any High School PE Teacher or just any High School Teacher how many gym shorts, t-shirts, swim suits and caps they have purchased throughout their careers and the kids still refuse to dress for PE!

And, YES, Fargo Woman, when kids refuse to co operate and learn it is their responsibility and probably their fault if they can't swim!

Having grown up here in Rogers Park, it seemed like all of the kids knew how to swim as they did walk. We lived at the BEACH in the summertime. But we knew if the lifeguard wasn't there on the beach not to go in the water!
The lifeguards taught us about the ways of the water and even when the lifeguard was present, there were days we couldn't swim.
We actually listened to the lifeguards. They were persons that
we respected and adored.

That seems kind of excessive little betty, but lifeguards on the beaches might have saved this mans life.

I've been receiving many bits and pieces about Tom Long. As I get these confirmed, I'll share.

So I imagine you want life guards out on the sand until... hmmm November... December... all year long? I suppose if we had life guards all year long, you'd do undercover filming of them guarding no one on the beach for most of the day? What a sensation that would be. Life Guards get paid to watch nobody. Surely they would have to have some political connection to have such a choice job.

I feel sorry for the guy. But he should not have been in the water alone.

Check out the story by Mannis. He is such a clown.

In the past he complained that perches were removed too early from the beaches. He never mentions lifeguards leaving too early. Someone even commented about how happy they were the lifeguards were gone. He never responded to that commenter.

Now he thinks it is a big problem that because lifeguards are not on duty after Labor Day.

I thought the perches were the reason for the safe conditions. Oh yeah, it's the Lifeguards stupid!

Bill Morton said...

Considering that the weather is warm for weeks following Labor Day, I suggest posting guards at the beaches until the end of September during the daylight hours. Modifications could be made to the normal beach operational schedule to take into account earlier sunset, which would also reduce the billable hours for life guards in the post summer season. Everyone knows you shouldn't swim after dark. I believe it is within the realm of reason to continue normal beach operation in the month of September, weather permitting.

Bill:

Maybe I'm generalizing, but a lot of the guards are college students who return to college in the fall. One of my co-worker's daugher worked on the city's lakefront this year as a guard. She's now downstate in her dorm. Hella'va commute I'd say. So which beaches would get guards? Usually guards are paired off. Would there be enough guards at every beach to go around? Should we expect guards before Memorial Day too? How about in the summer time, should we have guards at sunrise to protect the swimmers that like to bathe at dawn? How about for people who like to swim afterdark? I think you a fast joining the group of people here with truely unreasonable expectations. If people do not understand that you swim at your own risk when there are no guard present--oh well.

madeinrogerspark, the southern boundry of Rogers Park is Devon, 6400 North. At 5800 and 5900 respectively, neither Mather or Senn qualify. Your earlier statement did not specify high schools, only schools in general. My response was to the fact that there is no school curriculum for swimming in any Rogers Park school. I still stand by that.

By the way, I called Senn to find out their schedule for public use of their pool. They have none. It is not open to the public.

Mather's facility is controled by the Park District. Here is their schedule for public use of the pool:

Family Swim (free) is from 8 to 9pm Monday and Friday only.

Learn to Swim (free) for ages 6-12 is on Monday from 7 to 8pm

Lap Swim ($20 per person) for ages 18 and up are for 45 minutes each night at different times Monday through Friday

Note: other than family swim, teens aren’t welcome.

What about Sullivan. It has a pool. There is also a YMCA and the JCC in rogers park. If you really want your kids to learn to swim, then there is an opportunity.

pools unfortunately are becoming less and less common because of liability issues.
just thank our litigious society once again. that point was also brought up in this mans death. it must be someone else's fault he died.

I just had to put my 5 cents in for what it's worth...
I live in a condo on the beach at Birchwood and swim at the Fargo beach daily - Frequently from buoy to buoy. So many people have left rude remarks on blogs linked to this tragedy – I am shocked!

Being a tri-athlete I am a competent swimmer and would strongly advice anyone not to swim alone. Anything can happen – the Lake can turn stormy very quickly and it is always better to have someone with you. Personally I swim alone frequently and realize that everyone cannot always have someone with him or her. It is important to be cautious with your life.

All the suggestions and remarks regarding lifeguards – Anyone that enjoys swimming will agree that having them on the beach is actually a pain in the butt! You cannot swim, but rather have to stand waist deep in the water. Honestly – does anyone really entrust their lives in the children employed over summer holidays as lifeguards in the first place?

I think the lesson to be learned from this tragedy is to make sure that you do not exceed your abilities in the water. Try to have a friend accompany you when you do go out deeper than where you can stand and always be cautious when in the hands of nature.

My thoughts go out to those who knew Mr. Tom Long. This should be a reminder of how short life is and how quickly it can be taken!

Be safe – peace.

Marguerite Smit:

Of course the lifeguards can be a pain in the butt if you want to swim all over the lake.

unfortunately there are plenty of people who do rely on the lifeguards. many parents expect the lifeguards to be babysitters when they are at the beach. there are plenty of people who should not be swimming because they are under the influence. and of course there are people who do not respect the danger of swimming in a large body of water like lake michigan.

the fact remains that when lifeguards on duty there is rarely a drowning. the city is not going to change because of that important fact.

so go ahead and complain, but it hasnt changed in the last 30 years or more, so i doubt it will change anytime soon. you can swim in some designated spots like near oak street. you can also swim laps in cpd pools. but most likely you will whine like many do about the lifeguards. and then you will celebrate the lifeguards leaving, but notice the number of drownings when the lifeguards are off duty.

swim at your own risk
