* Paid to do Nothing - What Neighbors are Saying

Part two in a four part series...

Mr. Jones said... "They will just come up with a lame excuse. We were waiting on material to be delivered, a bricklayer or carpenter to be assigned, or they were waiting for it to rain so they could go home anyway."

Big Daddy said....> "This happens all the time.... It is how things are done here in Chicago. A few years ago they replaced the curbs on my street. My street is only two blocks long. It took them 2 WEEKS to do the job.

The average day went something like this.

Arrive on the job site around 8:00. Stand around, evaluate the site for an hour or so. Do a little work for an hour or so and then stand around some more until lunch. Then go to lunch for a couple of hours and come back. Stand around some more and wait for the cement truck Pour some cement, stand around some more and then head in around 2:30 or so.

EVERY SINGLE DAY FOR TWO WEEKS!

I imagine if you talked to one of their spokesmen, he would say that they were waiting for the cement truck. Fine, but how about doing some work while they are waiting for that cement truck. A private construction company could have completed this job in a couple of days."

Fargo Woman said... "The fact is they were standing steps away from the hole. WORK WAS NEEDED RIGHT THEN AND THERE! What more do they need? They were dressed properly for the occasion. The equipment was there. The need was there. Hell, they even had a freakin' audience.

What the F@%# were they waiting for? Mayor Daley to personally come by and give 'em an "Atta boy!"?

Oh, I get it - they knew the film was rolling but no one said, "ACTION!" yet. Right?

Joe Moore has said nothing so far.

nothing new; everywhere in the u.s., govt and union jobs are FAT
with waste.

when i worked for u.s. steel, if our mill wasn't running due to a blade change, approx 4hrs, we were allowed to sleep, as long as we didn't lay down to do it. because, if they sent us home and then called us back after the blase change, they'd have to pay us 'inconvenience' pay. it was cheaper to let us stay and sleep.
gee, i wonder why our mill closed and the town went down the drain?

i went 'home' a few months ago, and main street, with it's trashed/empty store fronts and missing buildings, looks like a good example of a bad smile from a dental hygiene movie. but, there's very affordable housing, EVERYWHERE

Sparky, where's "home"? I once knew a man who's father retired from US Steel, I think. Is home Cleveland, Ohio?

cleveland?, no
pittsburgh.....the whole rust belt was hit about the same time

it became an issue where u.s. steel couldn't make it in that economic climate, and users could buy steel cheaper from foreign suppliers
