Breaking News....
At about 8:30 p.m. tonight, a 47 year old man was stabbed three times in the back and once in the abdomen. The incident happened just west of the baseball fields in Touhy Park, near Paulina and Sherwin. The offender fled east, but was apprehended shortly there-after. Police are still looking for the weapon in the park. It's being monitored as a crime scene. The victim was losing a lot of blood and was being transfered to St. Francis Hospital in Evanston. He's looking to be a 50/50 for survival. If Rogers Park had a trauma hospital, maybe the guy wouldn't be in such critical shape?
Around the same time, a 90 year old woman was taken to St. Francis Hospital. She was beaten down by someone in the 7400 block of North Clark. That's all the details on that crime.
BLOGNOTES: Repeat after me. Crime is down... Crime is down... Crime is down... Crime is down... Crime is down... Crime is down... Now, that should fix this crime problem we have in Rogers Park. Right Joe?

It's very upsetting. Some of us know a vet who sleeps there. It's not him, but it could have been. Any ideas about how to prevent violent crime?
Go to your C.A.P.S. meeting and report any suspicious activity. Don't go outside. Is one prevention.
Paradise,
I am glad it is not the vet too, but he is getting very worried about his safety. He told me this dispute started over a stolen bicycle.
Everyone should have handguns... with training. Arm the public and crime will dramatically drop off.
The liberal mentality of taking guns away from everyone isn't working. We are witnessing and experiencing that in leaps and bounds. TIME TO TRY A NEW APPROACH.
Granted ... this crime didn't involve guns... but had that person been armed perhaps he could have defended himself or the perpetrator would have thought twice about getting tangled in a defensive altercation.
IMHO
If you care about this vet, why do you let him sleep in Touhy Park?
Next time it may be him.
It doesn't make sense to me.
"If you care about this vet, why do you let him sleep in Touhy Park?"
Because you can't force people to get help. I work for a social service org that does outreach to homeless people, and it can take months of regular interaction with them to get them housed. They know from experience that having a place to sleep tonight doesn't necessarily mean having a place to sleep tomorrow night, or that getting housing can be contingent on getting sober or accepting Jesus (depending on the shelter). And if they don't want to give up drugs or come to Jesus or they just don't trust you, they don't want the shelter. It's tough work.
The vet who sleeps in the park is a grown man, and you can't help him unless he wants to be helped. Don't try to make the other posters here feel guilty for not letting him crash on their couch.
If he's getting more worried about the violence though, maybe he'll be more open to accepting some help and getting off the street.
The police were searching with flashlights until 9:30. There was a knife incident there last week too. This is scary because a ton of neighbors play in that park after dark with their dogs since there are so few places to take dogs for exercise in RP.
blogpants,
I was not suggesting that RP citizens enable him to be a bum in thier homes.
Has anyone suggested a shelter to him?
Has anyone offered to drive him to the shelter?
Is there a city service to help him get back on his feet, if he wants to?
Has anyone pooled some money together to get him a room at the local YMCA, if he will accept it? Is that inconceivable?
People seem to be concerned about this man. If our "ward representatives" don't do anything about obvious health and safety concerns, is it our civic duty?
Joe Moore doesn't give a shit about the ward. Don't waste your time dealing with that lazy jerk.
Catherine, you mean that the reverends, Da Mayor, and the other crime coddlers are wrong. Guns really aren't the problem? HMMMM, you mean being armed might prevent you from becoming a victim? Watch out, that type of statement might give Jesse and Flager a heart attack.
Bill,
In answer to your question, I do everything I can to help this gentleman including money, blankets, clothing and food.
He is no longer addicted to drugs, though that is indeed what made him homeless in the first place.
He is scheduled for hip replacement surgery this fall and once he has recooperated, he hopes to reenter the job force.
In the meantime he does what he can. He helps with yard work, helps at the Fruit market and spends his days at the Howard Community Center working on an online education program from Roosevelt College.
He accepts some help but does not want to become a burden on anyone. In the meantime, he has had a difficult time finding anyone who will house him after surgery
It is not a long trip to St. Francis, maybe 5 minutes from the Touhy Park area most hours of the day. If Rogers Park had a hospital, it's unlikely it would have a Level 1 trauma center like St. Francis. What we've got there does the job well.
margot,
How much downtime will he have after his hip replacement surgery?
