* What Really Influences Joe Moore?

"I'll wait and see what (the zoning advisory committee) says. They seemed favorably disposed at their July meeting, but are waiting to review community comments. "I'm often influenced by what's said in these (community) meetings. If residents were throwing rotten tomatoes at the developer, I'd have to take that into consideration."

BLOGNOTES: First off, Joe Moore didn't hold a hand-count vote at the meeting, even though he was asked three times to hold a vote. How's he going to know what the community thought?

Joe knows, had he held a vote, it would've surely been a overwhelmingly big NO DEAL. Other than the half dozen shills who Moore had planted in the room praising the deal, the majority of the 30 people in attendance thought the TIF hand-out sucked.

Joe Moore didn't 'stack the deck' enough in his favor at this meeting to have anything go his way. If that's what throwing rotten tomatoes means, a few nasty bushels were thrown at this developer.

It's been a week since the meeting. Joe Moore told Michael Land at the meeting to post the information on the ward website. He made a big deal of it, as if he was giving Land marching orders on open ZULAC transparency. At last look, nothing has been posted.

I guess that either means the 49th Ward has a mind-reading alderman or that Joe Moore doesn't give a rat's ass about what the people think or want. Let me check my mystic 8-Ball here.

"Hey 8-Ball, is Joe Moore a mind-reader?"

Here comes the answer.

"HELL NO!!!"

Developer seeks TIF money for Sheridan Road renovation

September 5, 2007

By LORRAINE SWANSON News-Star

"[The developers] presented their plan at the July meeting of the 49th Ward Zoning Advisory Committee. The zoning committee will decide whether it will recommend backing the developers' request for $2 million in TIF assistance at its Sept. 11 meeting."

WHY is Moore's ZONING committee reviewing public property tax subsidies?

I too would like to see the TIF credentials of the ZULAC committee.

joe probably didn't call for a show of hands, because he only wanted the opinions of the sane people in attendance. who can blame him?

been there, by "sane" do you mean only those people who are willing to lie down to be raped on their property taxes to fix up other people's decrepit apt buildings.

Do you mean only those people who are willing to see that tax hike incorporated into their own unsubsidized market rents, or those property owners on low incomes who are willing to sell the houses they can no longer pay the taxes on after struggling for 40 years to own them, just so they can help pay for rehabs on other folks' properties?

I have nothing against the ownership of the Sheridan Road 4+1 in question, but I question the economic wisdom of throwing the ownership another couple of million for a facelift that will not disguise the incorrigible ugliness of the place, and will only bring platoons of bureacrats into the act of rehabbing the building, which the owner admitted he could do without government assistance; and keeping the apartments "affordable", which, given the intrinsic low quality of the place, they will never be anything but.

The city is running heavily in debt, and the biggest contributing factor to its condition is the shrinking tax base, due in large part to the proliferation of TIF districts. How many private projects can we subsidize and still have the money for essential civil services such as police & fire protection up to codes, decent public transit, decent maintenance of essential road and water infrastructure, and our schools, such as they are?

by sane i mean the people a) who do not share the obsession and swallow the lies of a raving lunatic, and b) who understand what government is for, and know that we are all in this together.
i have seen a few tifs that i would not have approved, were i the grand poobah of tifs. but overall, i think they are smart.
in my talks with my neighbors during the campaign, many of them expressed frustration at the loss of affordable housing in the ward. this is a way to get it. i approve.

but i do wish that people would think a little harder about what kind of an impact this here propaganda organ has on this ward. i think it is not good. confrontational crazy people not only don't accomplish anything, they actively work against a functioning government. it is an important element of a democracy that the campaign ends when the campaign ends. this kind of craziness is extremely detrimental.

Study how a TIF really works, and you will see that it is only another form of corporate welfare, that shrinks the effective tax base, thus further burdening property owners who do not benefit.

The owners stated, at the meeting, that they could do a "soft" rehab, sans the facelift and extras, but upgrading the building considerably, without city funding, but that they would have to charge a 'market' rent of about $875 for a one bed. The subsidized rent wont be much underneath that.

There is no reason for the taxpayers to fund this project, or any private project.
