A fire broke out at about 9:38 PM in a three-flat located at 1539 West Devon Avenue. It sounds like there's four people who have serious burns from the fire and are being transfered to various hospitals. Weiss, Swedish and St. Francis are the three. There is a warming bus parked on Devon Avenue for those who were evacuated from the building fire.
Update 10:15 PM: Devon is blocked off from Greenview to Clark.
Update 10:20 PM: Owner of the building has arrived on the scene.
Update 10:40 PM: News Affairs called the 24th district and wants to know what's going on.
Update 10:50 PM: One victim is D.O.A. at one of the hospitals.
Update 11:00 PM: I'm told by a reliable source, there were no working smoke detectors to be found.
Update 11:10 PM: Mobile command is about to roll out and the street is about to re-open. As chaotic of a scene this was, the 24th district police did a masterful job of handling the situation.
Update 11:30 PM: First look major media reports. Chicago Tribune.
Update 6:00 AM: Channel 5 reports.
Update 6:05 AM: Chicago Sun-Times

same old same old. how expensive are batteries or smoke detectors? people choose not to care and this is what happens. the government can only do so much. let us thin the herd and cut more social services and lower our taxes!
we all know it will never happen.
Your "reliable source" is bullshit!
Who is it? The wrongly reported stories on the ST & Trib websites?
As I know the building, there were working smoke detectors.
All the residents knew of the fire because of the working detectors.
The fire was caused by a drunken resident falling asleep while smoking in the hallway.
The dead man wasn't a resident of the building, it's unknown who he is.
The city kicked out all the residents today, most moved to Kaplan's building at 6408 Glenwood.
The Kaplan building is the one that the neighborhood wants shut down.
All of those forced out told me they want to come back as soon as they can.
Have you ever heard anyone say that about Kaplan's building?
Just the drug dealers & whores he lets live up there!
I have since learned that the dead man was an illegal alien from Hungary.
He also was just released from Cook County Hospital suffering from terminal liver cancer.
hey mr sock puppet,
the tribune report cited fire dept. officilas saying that working smoke detector were not found.
save your outrage for when you have a clue.
do some research on fire fatalities and see how many involve "working smoke detectors".
hey mr isaac marshall,
You need to get a clue, and learn to spell too. There's no such word as 'officilas'!
Also learn how to properly match singular & plural in a sentence!
And learn how to use proper capitalization!
e.e. cummings, you're not!
And never make an assumption that I'm a "mr"!
I may or may not be!
And learn a simple fact, many residents take out the batteries in their detectors because they are such heavy smokers that they can't stand the detector going off all the time!
One of the supposedly non working detectors, a combination smoke & monoxide detector that has both AC & battery power, was still making noise today, even though it was partially melted! The melted detector had to be broken apart to remove the battery & get it to stop beeping!
As for the Trib report, it was wrong!
Or do you believe that newspapers never make mistakes?
Unlike you, I have actually been in the building!
hey mr sock muppet:
it is funny how people are such sticklers for grammar, punctuation and capitilzation on these blogs. they are perfect and everyone else should be too. most people dont give a rats ass if they make a grammatical error or spelling mistake on blogs. it is not that important. if it were work related or something i really cared about, then i would spell check and review before sending.
lets see, you state that people take batteries out all the time. agreed. that makes my case of why the smoke detectors were not working. fyi, heavy smoking is not the only reason people take batteries out. cooking, is probably the most common! you also have not researched the statistics of fire deaths when smoke detectors are working. waiting for my answer there.
so you have been in the building and there is a detector going off. could it be possible that it was not going off at the time of the fire?
and yes the news media makes mistakes, or in this case was it the fire department? get that info. who states they were not going off on arrival, the fire dept. or the tribune?
have fun in your burnt building.
I don't give a fuck about researching statistics on smoke detectors & fire deaths!
Why?
Because that's not the point here!
Plus, if you have what you claim are facts, then post it & the link to it!
Do your own research!
I was in the building & I know what caused the fire!
As for your bullshit response about it not going off during the fire, it was going off & was almost dead on Thursday afternoon, 72 hours after the fire.
Beeping all that time!
Proper spelling & punctuation are the mark of someone with an education.
Obviously, you don't have any!
sock puppet dumper:
Tisk, tisk, someone is so easily angered.
My education includes two degrees. I have used them to obtain a great career. At this point they are nothing more than two fancy sheets of paper. It probably makes you feel better about yourself to think you are more educated and thus more superior.
The point about smoke detectors is that if there is a working detector, a fire death is less likely. That is the point I was making. You were the one going crazy from the beginning that the reliable source was "bullshit". Your initial response seems as though it was a second hand account of the incident. You now make it sound as if you were there at the time of the fire. You may be trying to hide your identity by changing your story, but do you expect others to read your mind?
You obviously have anger management issues and your foul language must mean you are lower on the social ladder. Continue to enjoy the fire damage.
Please cherish my current post and it's far superior grammar.
Gee, you responded with what you should have written in the first place!
Why is it that ranters like you are always demanding statistics from those opposed to them?
And you have finally learned to spell, capitalize & punctuate.
See, it wasn't that hard!
And I was there at the time of the fire! And I've been in the building since the fire.
Which is more than you can say!
mr sock stuppet:
I DIDNT JUST LEARN YOU RETARD. IT JUST ISNT NECESSARY. YOU CAN UNDERSTAND EVERYTHING I AM SAYING WITHOUT PROPER GRAMMAR.
Did you konw you’re a guiens? Jsut the fcat taht you can atllacuy raed tihs psot porves taht fcat. YOU CALL ME A RANTER, BUT WHO WAS THE FIRST TO FLY OFF THE HANDLE?
I AM GLAD YOU CAN ADMIT TO BEING AT THE FIRE, BECAUSE YOUR FIRST POST DID NOT LEAVE THAT IMPRESSION.
"All the residents knew of the fire because of the working detectors."
YOU STILL DIDNT ANSWER WHO GOT IT WRONG, THE TRIB OR THE FIRE DEPT!!!!
AND HERE ARE YOUR STATISTICS SINCE YOU WERE TOO LAZY TO LOOK THEM UP.
Facts & figures
* A 2004 U.S. telephone survey found that 96% of the households surveyed had at least one smoke alarm, yet in 2000-2004, no smoke alarms were present or none operated in almost half (46%) of the reported home fires.
* An estimated 890 lives could be saved each year if all homes had working smoke alarms.
* 65% of reported home fire deaths in 2000-2004 resulted from fires in homes with no smoke alarms or no working smoke alarms.
* The fire death rate in homes with working smoke alarms is 51% less than the rate for homes without this protection.
* In one out of every five homes equipped with at least one smoke alarm installed, not a single one was working.
* Why do smoke alarms fail? Most often because of missing, disconnected or dead batteries. Nuisance activations were the leading cause of disabled smoke alarms.
