* Don't Vote For Someone Because the 'Machine' Says So

A personal note from Suzanne Elder:

More of the Same Won't Cut It

People are tired of elected offices being filled with pre-selected replacements. The insider games, the same small political clique, and pay-to-play politics have given us nothing but indictments, gridlock, a transit mess, and TIF abuse. I will work to:

End Pay-to-Play politics in Illinois. Pay-to-play politics affects each of the four supercharged crises we face—education, transit, healthcare, and pension funding.

Secure Mass Transit. It’s key to the health of our city and the state economy. It’s also a moral obligation of a carbon-conscious society. Funding and agency reform is needed to ensure safe and reliable transportation for the region, now and for the future.

Reform Tax Increment Financing (TIF). The injudicious use of TIFs has put a strain on schools and property taxes. We must report the impact on property tax bills, peg tax base to inflation and more.
Make Up Your Own Mind

Elected office cannot be the sole province of those who are well-connected or well funded. Barack Obama says "top-down" politics is wrong; Al Gore says the dominance of wealthy contributors is "undermining democracy." They’re both right.

I am a 25-year resident of this district, a small business owner, an analyst, and an advocate who has worked to draft a bill passed by the House. I think I know what this community values. But don't take my word for it. Read more at my campaign website.
You Can Make a Difference

So far, in head-to-head open forums where voters have heard both candidates equally, our campaign leads. Our challenge is to get the message to every voter in the district.

Between now and February 5th, a lot of slick, expensive political advertising will arrive in your mailbox. It won't be from me. I don't think we should waste a small forest or a small fortune to reach voters and build a network of interest and action.

If you believe that democracy is more than a spectator sport, help me spread the word. Please forward this blog to at least three of your friends and neighbors.

Sincerely,

Suzanne Elder
Candidate for 7th District State Senate

From Suzanne Elders diary on her blogsite:

On Monday, I met with 49th Ward residents at an event hosted by Alderman Joe Moore and Committeeman David Fagus. It was an exciting evening and I was heartened by the confidence and support of the voters that were there that evening. Like so many others in the district, residents in the 49th understand how vital it is that access to public office remains open to everyone.
