* Save 4-H

Me and My Horse & Pony.

Yes, that's me with my horse, Sally (top photo) - and pony Tanya (bottom photo). Sally was the trial ride and show horse. Tanya 'the pony' was the super fast - speed racer.

The House of Representatives voted Friday, Feb. 22 on a bill to appropriate funds that were vetoed by the Governor for the 4-H Development Educators Program. On Wednesday, Feb. 27, House Bill 4228 moved to the Senate.

“The 4-H Program has been a staple in our communities for over a hundred years,” State Rep. Mike Smith said. “This program gives our children the opportunity to learn life lessons, build relationships with the community and work with their peers for a brighter future.”

The 4-H Youth Development Educators Program is funded through the Department of Agriculture.

Last fall, the governor vetoed the funding for the program. House Bill 4228 would restore and increase the vetoed funding the program.

The 4-H program works to build future leaders by focusing on youth and helps them learn skills for living. The four leaves in the clover logo stand for health, heart, head, and hands, which are the basis for their curriculum. It is one of the largest youth-serving organizations in the world. It is in all 50 states and over 80 countries. 4-H offers hundreds of programs for youths and the leaders assemble a curriculum that is right for that community and builds on local values.

Youth involved in the 4-H program are instilled with strong values that help them, their families, schools and communities,” Smith said. “Vetoing the funding for the 4-H program is just another instance where the governor is out of touch with our values and our needs here in Central Illinois and across the state.”

House Bill 4228 is currently in the Senate awaiting a first reading.

Blognotes: Certain programs are tried and true. They accomplish something positive in a young person's life. I was a Lakeland 4-H'er. The goal of 4-H is youth development. 4-H is for kids in the 3rd grade through one year after graduation from high school. You couldn't compete in the Walworth County Fair without being a member. So much of our farm life revolved around 4-H. But there's messages and programs that would work perfect in the urban environment too. So much of who I am is because of 4-H. I probably stayed out of a lot of trouble because of 4-H.

To my newly elected, Senator Steans. Please vote and urge you fellow Senators to vote 'Yea' and restore funding to this vital program. I will be watching.

Hey Craigie Poo Poo, why don't you donate some of your dad's hard earned money - considering he left you a whole bunch and the magazine, you can help save 4-H.

But no, you'll just sit and type about it.

Worthless - your middle name

4-H is a worthwhile and venerable youth program and serves an important role in reinforcing the value and values of agricultural culture. It would serve urban areas well if kids here had more connection to the land, and exposure to where our food comes from.

Jefflaw left a thoughtful comment to this wonderful post by Craig. But "rogers" and "natas" are, sadly, too typical of the brainless morons who inhabit much of Chicago's 49th Mental Ward. Sad. No wonder Joe Moore keeps winning elections with voters like these. And no wonder why I am turning off all commenting on my blog. Keep up the good work Craig.

I've just watched a news item on Chanel 2 about the $1,000,000 in state money mistakenly given to a PRIVATE school. Mistakenly because it was supposed to go to a church to rebuild it after a fire last year. He's not asking for the $1,000,000 back AND he's going forward with the state grant to the church. That's $2,000,000 in state tax monies. In light of the fact that he vetoed the budget item for 4-H, I have to ask the obvious questions:
1. WHY are we funding a private school that did not request the funds and did not pass the sanctioned scrutities all other schools have to pass in order to qualify for much less?
2. WHY are we funding the rebuilding of a church after a fire? Isn't that what insurance is for? In years past I served as treasurer for my chuch over the course of several years and insurance was always in the budget - not getting it was looked upon as poor stewardship. How does the governor square this with the whole separation of church and state?
While I'm asking these questions, how come no one seems to be the least bit interested in finding out who made this million dollar mistake in the first place. They seem to be blaming it on some clerk somewhere but, come on, what clerk writes a $1,000,000 check without getting approval from the top? This is absurd. But what is most absurd is the fact that we (the taxpayers) are paying out $2,000,000 to rebuild a church that evidently couldn't be bothered to get their own insurance and a private school when our public schools are begging for an extra grand or two to cover school supplies for the kids. This is CRAZY!

Then, on top of everything, he wants to close down funding for the 4-H programs throughout the state? ARGH!!!

we need to vote Blago out of office! The politics in this entire state, city, county, and state stinks!

If readers think Craig will do nothing but lament the loss of funding for this program, they haven't been paying attention.

We can count on Craig to pursue this. In turn, Craig can count on the Elder's support and participation.

Somebody alert the media! (The real media, that is.)

The great Tom "Rosebud" Mannis has turned off his comments!

It's a scandal!!!

For Once, I have to side with Rogers, although it pains me to do so, but Tom - how can you call any one a brainless moron? - you thought Hillary's middle name was Rodham, when it's her MAIDEN NAME, but you went off, showing how dumb you really are, ranting that "it was her middle name from birth" How dumb can you be? And, I'm sure Rogers would agree, being called a moron by you is a compliment.

You lose IQ points every time you open your mouth, think and or type at your PC.
