A 17-year-old male was killed and three other males, including a 14-year-old, were stabbed in what police believe was a gang-related attack in Rogers Park Sunday night.Blognotes: So much for the new curfew time.
Police said the stabbings occurred shortly before midnight Sunday at 6200 N. Clark St. Emergency crews received two 911 calls -- the first one coming about midnight -- from separate locations about half a block apart. Source.

Isn't that Edgewater? Do these news agencies have something against RP? Every time there is a bad thing happening near RP it's labeled as having happened in RP, and the past several times it's been in Edgewater.

A big part of the 'labeling' problem is that the 24th Police District is named the Rogers Park District. When the 'media' report crimes in the 24th, they refer to the Rogers Park District and most people peg it to the R.P. neighborhood, when in fact the 24th District covers south to Petterson and West to Kedzie, a geographical area almost 4 times the actual size of the Rogers Park neighborhood. For years I've felt that the name of the 24th District should be changed to something more 'generic' like maby the "Devon District".
1. This stabbing melee is obviously Joe Moore's fault.
2. Expect similar instances when it really warms up.
3. Had those juveniles been partaking in a wholesome activity, like dirt biking with their uncles, this incident could have been prevented.
Sometimes I think there is an inflamatory anti RogersPark. I agree with dr o in the sense that things are reported to happen in Rogers Park and they really don't. When I have posted an ad to rent my apartment and a potentail renter has called the comment is frequently, " Rogers Park, forget it. That neighborhood is the worst."
I totally disagree and have now resorted to word of mouth when I am looking for a tennant. Thankfully now I am not in need and when I have a good tennant I do not raise the rent. This tennant can stay forever and I will not raise the rent. Sometimes a good tennant is worth way more than a couple of bucks.

I'm trying to convince my wife that we should make the move to Rogers Park. But then she hears and see's stories like this and I'm back to zero in my efforts. She thinks it's a gang and drug infested area despite all my efforts to reassure her that it's not. Oh well, I guess I'll keep hounding her.
In areas zoned for high density there will be fools. Where there are enough fools, there will be some crime. Often shortsighted reaction sparks pointless violence. So much for curfew enforcement!
Rogers Park's problem is definitely its pockets of high-density rental buildings.
The best or better areas are those that mix single family and rental, and those that are situated (save for the RP Northwestern train stop) far from the el stations like Howard, Jarvis, Morse, and Granville.
But all of RP is less preferable to Evanston (that parts of Evanston not really too close to RP)and Skokie and Ravenswood. And any guy trying to "convince" his wife or girlfriend to live there is foolish and deluded.
There are simply too many gangbangers and unsupervised youth (both with MAJOR "attitudes" and little common sense or education) in RP's high density rental pockets.
here's a Sun-Times article about a crime in the heart of Uptown - that never mentions Uptown! because their police district is called the "Town Hall" district!

A teenager was charged with aggravated battery after allegedly pushing a Chicago Police officer to the ground as the officer was trying to break up a fight involving several teenagers at a North Side fast-food restaurant Monday afternoon.
The male teen was charged with aggravated battery, according to a Town Hall police District captain early Tuesday. The teen charged is apparently a senior at a South Side high school.

Hugh you are correct. The 24th Police District needs to be renamed not after a particular 'neighborhood' but rather a generic name. The 'Devon District' fits in that Devon Avenue is a major street that intersects the 24th District's center.
BillieJoe, I guess your referring to me. If you think things are bad in RP, think again. The stats (and no, Joe Moore doesn't control them) indicate that RP ranks near the bottom compared to other police districts. While there can be spikes in crime from time to time, overall it is a pretty safe area and one that I would not mind living in.
I see the crime stats all the time & RP is safer than most of the city.
Most of the crime is property crime.
And I've been complaining to the media for years about RP getting blamed for crime in Edgewater.
But Devon won't fly for the name, the Indian businesses won't allow it & they'll bribe Berny Stone to get their way.
Call it the Clark St. District, that's where it is.
