* Bong Squad Saves Neighborhood

Now that the smoke has settled, let me tell you about last night. According to my source, last night there was a bomb scare at 7363 North Damen. Or should I say bong scare.

By my time-line, it started about 9:35 PM.

By 10:05 PM I arrived on scene to witness Damen being blocked off from Jarvis to Fargo. Two fire trucks were on hand. At least a dozen squad cars were there too.

30 to 40 clueless neighbors, their kids and pets gathered at both ends of the police tape at Fargo and Jarvis wondering why they were kicked out of their homes.

At 11:00 PM there still was no official reason from any police on scene as to why the neighborhood was being held hostage.

About 11:15 PM I got word it was most likely a false alarm. My source tells me someone had mistaken smoking paraphernalia for a pipe-bomb device.

It wasn't until after 12:30 AM everyone was given the "all clear" and the residents, kid's and pets were allowed back in their homes. By then the police attention shifted to "something big" in the 1700 block of West Juneway. The bong scare on Damen was over.

A 27-year-old man faces drug and weapons charges Wednesday after reports of leaking water led police to his Far North Side apartment Tuesday night, which was allegedly filled with cannabis and marijuana plants in what police are calling an apparent "plant growth system."

Chad Moses is charged with felony possession of cannabis over 5,000 grams, producing more than 20 cannabis plants, illegal possession of ammunition, possession of an unregistered firearm and possession of an expired FOID card, police News Affairs Officer Marcel Bright said. Source.

It wasn't a bong. It was some sort of device that refined the product to make hash oil. It looked like a bomb.

8:54 PM

The Sun Times piece made it out to be a "container" in which the "weed" was held not smoked. Anyway........

What a dumb ass..........you should live in a single family home if yer gonna cultivate weed in the city.

Sheesh.

Yeah Fargo....I was a jokin.

Weed container, bong, hash-oil making device.... whatever.

My point of the matter is by 11:15 PM the police knew it was a harmless situation.

Yet, for another hour and fifteen minutes the police held the neighborhood hostage by not allowing anyone back in the homes and apartments.

Besides the fact they wouldn't release any information on what was going on.

To top it off, they used a serious amount of over-kill force to protect the indoor cannabis crop from the public. This was a huge tax payer waste in my opinion.

And if the guy who did this (Chad Moses) is who I think he is - I'd like to know what happened to his Great Dane...

Sun-Times said...> "Officers dispatched a description of the owner of the condo, and he was arrested about 10:30 p.m. at Fargo and Damen avenues."

Let's take the timeline back. I'm guessing the police knew it wasn't a bomb by 10:30 PM. That's two hours they made up to 40 residents stand on the sidewalk wondering what the hell was going on while 20 officers guarded 100 foot of yellow police tape.

Freelance reporter Tom Mannis said...> "Dozens of cops sat around for hours, smoking, joking and chilling while neighbors, stranded outside, got chilly. Residents were worried and told to shut up when they asked for information. Unacceptable!"

Okay, I'm going to take the word of a soon to be felon, that its not a bomb. It took the techs awhile to make their own determination. Yea, let the people go back and if it blows up, let the city pay... Is mannis depressed because the cars have cameras now.

Our neighborhood cops do a pretty damn good job in the face of pretty lousy conditions.

I don't believe we should give them a bad time if they were overly cautious about allowing folks back into their buildings.

Give 'em a break, please.
