* Shooting on Birchwood (Update)

Reports are coming to me via email about a yet another shooting on Birchwood. Being out of town - I'm only getting bits and pieces. I'm told it happened in the crime-ridden CAPS Beat 2424 area.
"A 26-year-old man was found lying face down on a Rogers Park sidewalk with multiple gunshot wounds Saturday night. The man was shot multiple times about 8:10 p.m. while standing in the street in the 2000 block of West Birchwood Avenue, police said. He was found lying face down on the sidewalk. Source.

Blognotes: Interestingly enough, the residents held a 'Crime is Down' walk in the neighborhood an hour earlier. Some good that did. Neighborhood walks don't work. Bring in the National Guard.

I live in a country where Al Sharpton desides who is quilty or not and I have to learn to speak Spanish if I want to get a job. And, I live in a city where the Mayors answer to all the crime is to give the Police bigger guns. The Police are'nt allowed to use the guns they have now. Where is Unckel Al and Unckel Jessie now? Are they marching through the streets of Chicago alongside the families who have lost a son or relative to gang gun fire asking the gangs to put down their guns? NOPE!!

I agree -- neighborhood walks don't mean jack. The criminals laugh at that.

Waiting on politicians and police officers to do something doesn't work, either. It would help if people would stop cowering from the bad guys. That's why the bad guys are able to take over neighborhoods.

Frankly, the Canadian Dollar has overcome the value of the U.S. Dollar. Much of that Mexican labor has simply crossed one more border to a freer society. Canada has a system that does not create a ridiculous set of hoops to jump through over many years simply to complete the lawful immigration process. Many have simply opted to generation out.

They would rather make a living than have no living. Many would like to learn English and do in spite of the situation. Other foreign residents, feel that they have no long term future or emotional commitment until they manage to live out their life being abused by employers who could care little about anything other than cheaper labor.

Congress is unable to fund the DHS to the point where they will effectively do anything other than destroy our economy and send those who serve us up north to serve Canadian whims. However, the Canadians will eventually let them lawfully work or ignore them for years.

Willie Bloomingburg, 26, was shot several times and killed Saturday night on the sidewalk in the 2000 block of West Birchwood Avenue on the city's North Side, police said. Bloomingburg, of the 2000 block of West Arthur Avenue, was pronounced dead at St. Francis Hospital in Evanston, said the Cook County medical examiner's office.

Not only do mexican immigrants not have to bother with learning English, people who do speak English and are in America, legally, now have to learn to speak spanish to communicate with any menial worker. How fucked up is that?

Para espanol prima numero dos.

What about all the other LEGAL immigrants who come to this country? When my parents came here from Poland, they learned to speak English. No one helped them along. And I can tell you, there are much, MUCH, fewer Polish people in Chicago than mexicans.

Tomboy, with all due respect, how will a citizen "stop cowering before the bad guys?". Just what can people do, specifically, that will not either get them killed or injured, or get them facing charges themselves?

I'm a woman in her fifties, and when I am walking home after coming in on a late flight, I shouldn't have to defend myself against muggers and thugs.

This is what we pay our politicians and police to do, and we have to DEMAND they do this.

To me, this means being supportive of the police in their efforts while demanding that they act ethically. Most of all, it means demanding that our elected officials, starting with our alderman, be accountable to us for turning this area into a dumping ground for the city's worst social problems, and for taking money away from law enforcement and other necessary services and allocating it to Da Mare's white elephant projects and to the swarms of parasites that surround our politicians and buy their good will.

So, instead of having "crime walks" , not to mention prayer circles for fallen thugs, we need to march on a local alderman's office and demand an accounting for the proliferation of bad buildings and criminal scum in our neighborhood.

Yeah, that's the ticket. Instead of signs with cleaver sayings on them - we'll bring torches and clubs like they did in the good old day's.

North Coast, my hands are 46 years old, but they still know how to hurt someone. I'm not about to be the victim of someone's ill-raised kid or an adult that's a career criminal if I can help it. I may not win the fight, but I sure as hell am not going to make it easy for them to take me down.

Unfortunately, cops can't be everywhere, they can't always get somewhere quickly, and unfortunately, they are hampered by laws that appear to favor criminals over law-abiding citizens. This is why I've always been an advocate of people knowing self-defense. Anyone can learn enough to stun a perp while they run off to safety.

What I'm saying is that communities need to take back their areas by not hiding behind doors and allowing the malcontents to run the streets. Once people start avoiding just living their lives -- avoiding the parks and beaches, not patronizing businesses, etc. -- then the criminals have already won. Why give them that kind of power? People need to stand up and say, "I'm not running, I'm not moving, I'm not going to alter my life because some folks choose to act like asses. If anything, they will move the hell out of my way."
