Two years ago, Mayor Daley urged the City Council to repeal a foie gras ban that he said had made Chicago “the laughingstock of the nation."Blognotes: Ha, he's kidding, right? Joe Moore has made a living (campaign contributions) off doing things without debate. Now Joe wants to get up-in-arms over being over-ruled?
Today, aldermen did just that, after plotting a legislative end-run that would set a new standard for violating City Council protocol and rolling over any opposition.
The foie gras ban was approved by the City Council in April 2006 by a vote of 48-to-1, after animal-rights activists made their cruelty case during a series of hearings before the council’s Health Committee.
It was repealed today in a 37-to-6 vote, with no debate. Before the repeal vote, Ald. Joe Moore (49th), chief sponsor of the foie gras ban, said it would be “the first time in my 17 years on the City Council that a matter was discharged from committee without a hearing.” Read the juicy story here.
Stop crying and move on, Joe. It's over. You lost.
What other's are saying.
"Thank goodness for the Mayor and aldermen having come to their senses! This ban was in fact ridiculous and it is not up to Joe Moore to determine what his neighbors eat."

"Alderman Joe Moore continues to waste the time of Chicagoans. This was a stupid ban to begin with, but reversing it takes up even moore time. Ald. Moore should pay the city back for all of the time he wastes pushing forward toothless bills like this and the silly Anti-War measures. Resign already, Joe!"

"In the first place, this was the dumbest ban and the biggest waste of taxpayer dollars I have ever seen! There are way more pressing issues to be discussed. If the city had spent the same amount of energy on the city schools' problems (take your pick on a subject); think of just how much work they could have accomplished by now!!!
I am sure the city can find more important things to do other than try to ban what I can eat and where I can smoke... I did not elect [you] to run my life."

"Tomorrow it could happen to you!"
Oh my liver hurts... from laughing. Is he serious?
This law was a joke from day one. I don't agree with the way foie gras is produced, but for any government agency to pass a law against serving food is absurd. It's as ridiculous as Prohibition was.

Hallelujah! Now maybe that fat loser will FINALLY concentrate on doing his job in Ward 49!
Yeah. That's going to happen.
Joe will just dream up another senseless piece of legislation, that's all. Something regarding a "hot-button" issue.
At least his fat, diseased ego got a ding.
Perhaps, henceforth other council members will just roundtable his ridiculous proposals instead of writing them into law.
First the Big-Box, now this.
Joe is 0 fer 2.
This should look good on Joey's "Please Elect Me to Congress" resume.
Little Joe just loves these omnibus bills.
That's how he repealed the moratorium on new liquor licenses for Clark St., which happened when Ahmed Odeh bribed Joe to the tune of $1500 as a campaign contribution & an unknown number of $100 bills under the table. Joe had to give back the $1500, but not the cash. The license for Odeh at 6701 Clark is still in the hands of the Liquor License Commision which takes its orders from Daley, so who knows how this turns out.
It's my understanding that Joe was 'paid' to propose and get this ban passed by Jena Krohl who is a big supporter of PETA. I think Hugh documented contributions from her in the amount of something like $40,000. Also, if you want to know how concerned Joe is with animal cruelty and abuse issues, ask the Rogers Park no-kill animal rescue shelter, The Red Door, how much support they've ever gotten from our Alderman.......zip, nada, zilch, not a word or contribution of ANY kind.
Foie gras ban reversed?!
It must feel like Christmas morning all day at Morsehellhole.
On what date has Craig scheduled the victory parade up Morse Ave? He must feel akin to being in Munchkinland the first 20 minutes after Dorothy's house creamed the Wicked Witch of the East.
Oh, sorry Craig. Let's make that a celebratory dirtbike parade. Invite your nephew.
whatever you think of Moore or foie gras
today was a VERY bad day if you care about
democracy
minority rights
process
Daley clearly showed his willingness to handle dissent with increasingly dictatorial processes and outright derision of those who disagree with him
As the good alderman himself said yesterday:
"There's really no reason to bring this up again."
Joe Moore
While I concur with the repeal, I don't like the way Daley handled it. He's a bully and we should all be frightened by his authoritarian tactics.
"Thank you, Joe "Foie Gras" Moore,"
Daley said, in front of the Council and press, while chairing the meeting

They do great work and are very worthy of donations, etc.
Joe "Foie Gras" Moore
I love it!
I just want to apologize for all the silly comments from billyjoe. You see, billyjoe has Tourette's of the hands. He doesn't really know what he's yammering about because he has no control over his affliction. Please don't hold it him. Thank you.
Pot calling the kettle black....
===When Moore objected and tried to exercise his right to postpone the vote, Daley ruled him out of order.
When Moore tried to debate the merits, Daley ruled that the measure was not debatable. He ordered the clerk to call the roll and to continue, even as Moore shouted for the right to be heard.===
"If it can happen to me, tomorrow it could happen to you," Moore warned his colleagues.
"Thank you, Ald. Joe ‘Foie Gras’ Moore," Daley said.
After the show of force, Moore denounced the mayor as a dictator and Wednesday’s meeting as a new low.
"Even in the ugliest days of one-man rule, members of the City Council still had the opportunity to ... state their case. For the mayor to fail to recognize me to debate the merits of this issue was the height of arrogance," Moore said.===
This is how Joe runs the 49th ward. Joe got a taste of his own medicine.
"Please don't hold it against him."
See, it's spreading...
Emailing me is okay too....
"Joe Moore can rest knowing that this will be his legacy; a failed legacy but a legacy nonetheless."
Joe Moore is a Sore Loser
the way this was done, we are all losers
On a personal note: HEY JOE! WHO'S "DISCREDITED" NOW? Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha! Oh, ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha! Man, my sides hurt from laughing! Ho ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha...!
For once, I actually agree with Hugh...
Whether or not you agree with the Foie Gras ban, and most of you don't, you can't deny that the way the mayor and the rest of the council repealed the ban was undemocratic and arrogant.
Alright I said my piece. Now feel free to rip me apart for being reasonable.
Channel 2 video.
I don't think any alderman needs to be called names by Daley, not even Joe Moore, that's our job
"Thank you, Joe "Foie Gras" Moore," Daley said, in front of the Council and press, while chairing the meeting.
Priceless!
More emails. This time from across the pond.
"I'm having a foie gras party tonight at my house in York - much shall be consumed!"
- Chris P, York, England
Daley is going all W on us, making up nick-names for everyone
naming-calling from the podium is an abuse of the Mayor's duty of chairing City Council meetings
If Daley wants to call aldermen names, he should get a blog
Moore has a right to an opportunity to waste even moore of everyone's time defending a meaningless, self-serving, campaign-funding publicity stunt
that's our system of government
this month Moore was disrespected
next month, it's Reilly's turn in the box
I guess this means Tunney will not be asked to caucus with the Progressives
Foie Gras got you all curious? Pastoral is doing free foie gras tastings all day Saturday (May 17th) at both its locations (2945 N. Broadway St., 773-472-4781; 53 E. Lake St.; 312-658-1250).
You can criticize the mayor's tactics all you like, but I believe he had to do a little shoving to correct Joe's hijacking of the city council over this ridiculous issue.
Joe wasted an insane amount of time on this -- and forced the entire city council to waste insane amounts of time on this -- all for the sake of personal limelight.
Do you all remember what a puffed up little media rooster Joe was during the ban?
Mayor Daley finally got this crap legislation off the table and sent a message that the city council needs to focus on real work -- which is exactly what our fat alderman needs to do!!
As a final thought, let's also not forget that Joe formed a little anti-Daley group and publicly picked a fight with the mayor. And that's exactly what he got. Now he's crying that he picked a fight and lost.
And given that Joe isn't exactly the sharpest knife in the political drawer, did anyone ever expect a different outcome?
A smart alderman would quit crying and get to work in his ward. Unfortunately, we don't have a smart alderman.
"[Billyjoe] has Tourette's of the hands. He doesn't really know what he's yammering about because he has no control over his affliction."
This comment is a classic case of projection. The "Tourette's" accusation could be made for most of the posts on this on other Rogers Park blogs (all akin to Chicken Little screaming, "The sky is falling! The sky is falling!"), along with those by the reader-commenters.
Billyjoe's remarks are, in part, intended to heighten the silliness of this obviously shared Tourette's affliction.
In this particular comment thread, Billyjoe got a huge chuckle out of the fact that the (mostly approved) reversal of the foie gras ban then set off rants such as " . . . Daley clearly showed his willingness to handle dissent with increasingly dictatorial processes and outright derision of those who disagree with him."
Damned if ya do, damned if ya dont.
See, bj's getting worse-now we get longer ramblings and third-person references. Can't wait for billyjoe's everythingspuppiesand rosesinrogerspark.com to start up
Daley has a 5th-grader's understanding of democracy:
Majority Rules
but he has no comprehension of the idea of the rights of minorities
" ... the mayor ... had to do a little shoving ... "
this month: foie gras
next month: construction in Grant Park
