A community center is suppose to unite, not divide. But that's not what's happening at the New Gale Community Center.
This originally ran Sept. 2007. This issue will soon to be revisited. Joe Moore is again playing politics with the children's future. Joe Moore is trying to make a political power-play with youth programs offered at the community center.
I can hear the chants from Joe's supporters now. It'll sound like what the Mayors supporters sounded like at the Children's Museum debate.

I am beginning to see some sense in limited terms for public office. I don't think it was ever meant to become a life time career but the way certain politicans are behaving lately I see limited terms becoming a choice of the people! Remeber that elected offices are for "service" of the public constituents in his/her community!
Bah! Humbug! The community of Rogers Park has waited so long for a decent park to serve the needs of the community that reside within the Gale Park Area! Kids need places to run and breaqthe! Seniors need a comfortable place to come together! The building is now built. Let's all just get along and put it to use for those who need it! Can't there just be peace and understanding!
It's just a shame to shut out people who worked hard for years to get this Fieldhouse just because they voted for the other guy. But hey, that's politics as we know it. The Boys and Girl's Clubs are a good program, but can't they include the neighbors that worked so hard in some way???
Joe tries to employ the same tactics as Mayor Daley - the very tactics he so whines about. The truth, however, is that he isn't very good at it.
I've said it before and have heard it said many times in City Hall: Joe Moore just isn't very bright.
Voters decide on the limited terms by voting someone new in. We can't legislate apathy.
just the way i heard and saw it- the nho folks failed to follow park district rules, failed to have quorums, failed to get their shit together. considering the delays on this project, shouldn't they have had their programs all figured out a long time ago? they were not ready, missed the deadline, and reacted very badly to joe's attempts to engage and settle disputes with the park district.
i don't think it is so much that they voted for the wrong guy as it is they are still mad they lost. this just does not tend to make for good cooperation and decision making. however many mistakes they feel joe has made, he won. it is a slap in the face to the voters, and not useful in a democracy, for people to drag old grudges into new opportunities. toni's posts, both today and in the past, show a great deal of anger and negative energy. however righteous that anger might be, it is not gonna result in much besides hard feelings.
when you are a leader, there is always a protester around. always a faction. you just cannot let that kind of negative energy gum up a planning process. you sometimes just have to close the door.
maybe there is some path to healing around here. but until there is, progress cannot be mired in hurt feelings.
