I don't know if this is a sign of Rogers Park "gentrification," but.... Around 6:00 to 6:30 AM this morning, about 70 feet of copper was stolen from a building at 1614 West Jonquil.
5 shots fired Sunday morning on Jonquil Terrace. 2 squad cars show up, circle the block one time and leave. Drug dealing every day for at least the last 6 months on Paulina, nothing is done. Dice games, card games and public drinking reported every day in Gale Park. Nothing is done.
Copper prices have gone up enough that folks are stealing it across the country. The Oil Drum's Drumbeat section (news roundup) has picked up stories from elsewhere about copper theft. Manhole covers are popular too it seems.
At 5:00 p.m. today I called 911 for 6 young men gambling and drinking alcohol at the north entrance to Gale Park. At 8:00 p.m. I called 911 again for gambling and alcohol drinking at the north entrance to Gale Park, this time with 25 to 30 young men. Both times I called, there was a dark green Chicago Park District suv parked at the south entrance to Gale Park. Are they responsible for security in the entire park or just the new field house? Does anyone patrol the park to keep it safe?
For as long as I have lived here North of Howard was always a disaster, You didn't go there. When you rang the for your Christmas Tip for delivery of the newspaper people answered the door not even knowing they received the paper. But I will say there were business on Howard that thrived. Mort Gibbions Shoes, The Woolworth next door, a diner (DeMar's) at the corner of Paulina and Howard. It was the place to go after Gale Lighted Schoolhouse on Friday nights. There was a little grocery store that had good products as well as good meats. There was a butcher on Paulina. There even was a little neighborhood grocery store on Paulina! The Howard Theatre showed movies on Saturday afternoon and it was packed. It isn't the color of people's skin tone that has decimated this area, it is any people who think work is for them and not us. It is any people that for whatever reason think someone owes them a living. It is just sad. And while I really don't want to move. i LOVE MY LAKE VIEW HOME. i LOVE MY NEIGHBORS I LOVE MY "HOOD" but I don't feel safe anymore. Imagine burning down someone's business because you whatever! Did anyone think hey this might be good, I could get a job here!

During good economic times, things steadily improve regardless of who is in charge.
During bad economic times, the ill effects of a weak alderman are felt.
