* Gunshot to Head Kills One in Rogers Park

Murder # 4 in Rogers Park for 2008
Police are conducting a death investigation after a man was found dead in a Far North Side apartment building with a gunshot to the head Tuesday. The unidentified man, believed to be in his 30s, was found dead in the 7000 block of North Clark Street, said the Cook County Medical Examiner’s office. The man had a gunshot wound to the head, police News Affairs Officer Laura Kubiak said. Source.
William Garriga, 42, was found around 12:40 p.m. Tuesday in the 7000 block of North Clark Street, according to police. A person called the building's owner after noticing the door to Garriga's apartment had been left open.

Garriga had been shot in the chest, and the Cook County medical examiner's office ruled his death a homicide after an autopsy.

Police said they had not established a motive and said the door did not appear to have been forced open. A police spokesman said detectives were following several leads, but no one was in custody Wednesday afternoon. Source.

I was walking to the little post office yesterday and saw all the police activity. I wondered what happened..especially when they put up the police tape. Thanks for posting. I was hoping it would be on "BBM radio or the morning news...guess not. Nice to know what's going on in the commuity.

Don't expect much coverage or neighborhood outcry. Rogers Parkers could care less.

In Uptown, it's a different story. Neighbors get fired up when they hear shots fired in their neighborhood.

Well, I get fired up about it - we should all care if there are shots fired!

Uptown's outcry is a recent incarnation. Now that Uptown is well on the way to gentrification, people get upset when the shootings occur, as they have for as long as I can remember. When I lived there, I don't recall any coverage or any protests, and certainly no blogs.

Rogers Park is not "there" yet in regard to street marches and so forth, but compared to what Uptown once was, and considering the popularity of this blog, I'd say Rogers is definitely got some concerned denizens. Hell, I remember the day I moved to Rogers Park. A group of people gathered on Devon holding signs that said "WE DEMAND A SAFE NEIGHBORHOOD."

I just saw this headline on the ChicagoTrib home page. The comment board was disabled - Big Brother Trib always does that when the controversies start

Re; Uptown problems or even Rogers Park. Did these people not know what sort of neighborhood they were moving into when they bought/rented?

I'm talking about people who are 'up in arms' (no pun intended) that this is going on around them, as if it's a new thing or an affront to them.

The cops call them 'the pioneers'~ those people who blindly wander 'onto the prairie', having no idea what the area is actually like.

What I wonder is how much worse the uptown area around Foster/ Sheridan is. I know the scanner is much more active.... but is that because there are more people who call 911?

Well Robin, that may be but it doesn't mean we shouldn't try to change it. There's no reason people should have to live in fear of some worthless gang members and thugs that wander the streets
