With seven days to go before the Presidential election, I haven't covered the big event on the blog until yesterday. It's not that the Presidential election doesn't mean anything to me. I just think it's too big that my blog has little effect on the outcome.
But today this caught my attention. Can you believe this?
An effigy of US Republican vice-presidential nominee Sarah Palin hanging by a noose as part of a Halloween display has drawn severe criticism, but local officials said the homeowner was covered by free speech rights.It doesn't even have to be Halloween. Presidential elections really bring out the kooks and freaks. Chad Michael Morisette is one of them. I've got one who lives near me. His name is Michael James.
Homeowner Chad Michael Morisette told local KCAL-TV the display should be considered Halloween "art" and said his neighbours would probably be more offended by a similar scene invoking Democrat Barack Obama.
"I know if we had done Barack Obama, people would have probably thrown things through our windows," Morisette said. "The image of a hanged black man is a lot more intense than the image of a hanged white woman for our country, the history of our country." Source.

but there were hangings for centuries before our country was even founded. I am tired of people placing so much emphasis on symbols and words. It also makes it easier to garner a heated reaction when we focus on these sybols and words.

The point I made is that women are still second class citizens in this country and across the world. They do not have the same hate crime backing that minorities do.

Palin happens to be in favor of the death penalty in Alaska.
Only problem for her is that the Alaska Territorial Legislature banned the death penalty in 1957, two years before it became a state & that hasn't changed & is unlikely to change now.

There is also a possibility of taking the pre birth test to make sure that the doctors have all of the pertinent medical information possible. When a mother has a level one ultrasound and there are questions about the fetus. They then conduct a level two ultrasound. This may or may not answer all of the doctors questions about the fetus. The doctors may request an amniocentesis. People that have this procedure does not necessarily mean that they are planning to terminate the pregnancy. Your tolerance is amazing. Then, maybe I'm just getting squeamish in my senility, for my memory now travels back to my high school years, when my classmates regularly burned in effigy the coach of the opposing football team, and our coach was burned in effigy by them. This happened every year just before the Turkey Day games.
But I'm still squeamish. Maybe because now, the implied violence hits too close to home- there's just too much of it in the media to begin with, and we're all sick from it. It doesn't matter what your political views are or who you support.

Halloween was always a non-event in my life. My mother hated the "holiday", and she did not give out candy to the rug rats who came to our door. She did buy us costumes to wear to the Halloween parties that were held in the grade schools we attended, but that was it. My siblings and I were not allowed to go trick-or-treating.
Due to my religious beliefs, I have a problem with a day that celebrates darkness and the occult.

I usually just read through the posts but figured I would add my two cents on some of the issues. For some background my name is Anthony Halpin and I have been in Rogers Park for about 1.5 years now.
I like how one of the questions asked is if we know anyone that is “overly obsessed” with politics and after reading the posts here, I think we can all say yes.
My first point is regarding testing for Downs. Allowing your doctor to test for Downs or any other condition is in no way an indicator that you are going to terminate the pregnancy if something doesn’t go your way. How do I know? I was in a doctor’s office two weeks ago with my pregnant wife talking about the different tests that are available and the pros and cons for each. I asked point blank if there were any benefits of finding out if the child had Downs prior to birth and the doctor informed me that there are medications and treatments that can be done to help the development and comfort of the baby prior to birth. Trying to link testing for Downs to abortion is not accurate especially in the case of someone who is pro life.
Secondly, the truth regarding abortion is that the neither the pro choice or the pro life people are consistently doing their part the help reduce the number of life’s effected by abortion. The pro choice camp thinks you can simply flick a switch and remove a woman’s burden of an unplanned pregnancy and the pro choice camp thinks that if you can convince a woman to give birth then you saved a life and are done. The truth is that nobody “wants” to have an abortion. We should all be doing a better job of supporting women so that they don’t have to chose between their unborn baby and their own life. This support should be from the day the woman finds out she is pregnant to the day she is comfortable and able to parent on her own even if that support lasts 18 years. It is easy for a pro choice individual to chastise someone who is pro life by saying they are not doing anything for the baby after it is born, but my question is what are you doing for the woman who terminated a pregnancy and is burdened by guilt for many more years.
Also, it is not even worth debating when you lump abortion with capital punishment or the need for deadly force in combat situations. Republicans tend to defend the innocent and democrats tend to defend those who have made their own bed.
Finally, there are a lot of extreme allegations on here and I think we all need to realize that whoever wins next week will not be as bad as their opponents think. We need to put or emotions aside for a little while, use our brains and support our candidate of choice. If that candidate doesn’t win, then you should still go out and work to make this a better country instead of crying and whining that things didn’t go your way.
