Hi Craig: I've been a reader of your blog for the last few years (since I moved to Rogers Park).
Anyway -- we've had some incidents on my block recently that bear reporting on. Hopefully someone can provide some information.
I live in the condo building in the 1600 block of West Estes. We've been having repeated incidents of tires being punctured in our parking lot at night. Meaning someone has been climbing the fence to do so. Apparently the building on the opposite side of the alley (on Greenleaf) has been having the same problem. Annoying, but not huge.
Earlier this week, though, our neighbors came home to find water flooding out of their furnace/water heater. It turns out that the same band of punks had actually shoved a garden hose down their air intake and turned it on. Serious damage.
Needless to say, if any of us find these kids, we're going to cut off their nuts and feed them back to them. We'd just appreciate your help in finding them.
You can sign this as "DH". Thanks.

Cheap surveillance systems.
Yes, a surveillance system and or alarm is preferable to cutting their nuts off or even getting them arrested. The jails are way too crowded to provide bed space for petty criminals.
Even better, start looking for a new area to live in. Im wondering why you chose to live in a part of RP that has been certifiably skanky for more than a dozen years.
I would not characterize the 1600 block as 'certifiably skanky' or on the decline. I live on that block and quite frankly it is one of the nicer ones in Rogers Park. Yes, there are problems that occassionally arise, and yes, these more often than not are caused by lawless punks that need to be confronted. Blaming the victim as billyjoe does is just Palin (and no, not a typo) Stupid!
"Yes, there are problems that occassionally* arise, and yes, these more often than not are caused by lawless punks that need to be confronted."
(*Only one s in occasion.)
The idea that vandalism like the poster described happens only "occasionally" makes it tolerable?
One time is too much for most people, and occasionally, to me, translates as "insult to injury."
Occasional incidents pile up; there were enough of them to make me flee Rogers Park 10 years ago!
But your "Palin Stupid" wordplay is pretty funny and clever. I think I'll even use that one!
I think the kids (and they are kids) are bored and supervisorless. They also upended a number of trash containers in the alley north of Estes. We kind of caught them in the act but they played innocent. If I have the kids pegged correctly, they live in one of the buildings on Touhy, either the blue and white condo building or the next multi unit building to the west. This kind of stuff is annoying (really really annoying)but it happens all over the world. Bored kids, lacking for direction, find whatever to occupy them.
Dear neighbor DH. The tires were punctured. That was easy. However, 1) a garden hose turned on and 2) put into a furnace/water heater? Isn't it sorta hard to gain access to the basement to do all that? This sounds not at all like kids or a band of local street punks. Instead it's more like targeted malice, an "inside job" perpetrated by someone with a grudge who knows you folks.
Also, Billyjoe, please stop. This area is not "certifiably skanky." Your terribly negative attitudes about our neighborhood are unjustified and destructive.
Actually, the hose and faucet are on the side of the building. The air intake is through a plastic pipe also on the side of the building. No one would need access to the basement.
wow citizen rp - Blaming the victim as billyjoe does is just Palin (and no, not a typo) Stupid! - That was necessary? What does dragging her and politics into this conversation have to do with anything??
I think catching these punks is critical. Keep sending and calling the alderman's office and the police!!
This kind of stuff is annoying (really really annoying)but it happens all over the world. Bored kids, lacking for direction, find whatever to occupy them.
yes, it happens all over the world and yes, the kids need direction. But until their parents take control of them (ahem) and they stop doing these things, what do you suggest people do. Put their hands on their hip and say, "(Chuckle), ah, those darn kids again."
Sorry, but I agree with a few others. Video cameras and a call to the cops. Tires are expensive and I don't know anyone who has that kind of money to throw around everytime a kid feels like being "rambunctous". Not to mention the possible water damage.
"Also, Billyjoe, please stop. This area is not "certifiably skanky." Your terribly negative attitudes about our neighborhood are unjustified and destructive."
Perhaps, Michael, but my remarks couldn't possibly be as destructive as a particular blog with the name "MorseHellHole," which publishes, sometimes multiple times per day, incidents that lend credence to my "certifiably skanky" observation.
I agree in trying to identify these punks, and support the idea of video cameras and making sure to call the police...that is common sense. As for my "Palin" comment, don't lose your sense of humor razldazirr. It is an analogy, which for your reference, is a similarity in some respects between things that are otherwise dissimilar. My point is that it makes no sense to tell someone to move away. And it's pretty obvious she makes no sense either.
You need to call the police immediately if you see any gang bangers on Estes. If you are not aware, the gangs around there are La Raza, Ashland Vikings, and the Gangster Disciples. Bastards
If there is an enclosed fence the thugs need to climb over just get a nice German Shepard and one of the tennants keep himin during the day and leave him out at night. That is what I did and no one bothers my house now ever!
well citizenrp - I don't think this is the place for your polticial opinions - personally I love Palin and think Biden is an idiot - but my suggestion is that you take it to the proper forum for political discussion. This is about punks causing damage to our neighborhoods.
I second the dog idea - I walk with two big dogs and the thugs move to the other side of the street!
oh and citizen - I know what an analogy is - but thanks for your definition!
My guess is that Razldazlrr must be one of those people with whom you can't discuss politics beyond a single issue: "Obama and the Democrats want to kill unborn babies."
Per Razldazirr: "I don't think this is the place for your polticial opinions" and then "personally I love Palin and think Biden is an idiot"
Enough said.
"Enough said."
Well, that and "Obama and the Democrats want to kill unborn babies."
WOW - Unbelievable - I come in here to talk about ways to help our neighborhoods - You both are true smart ass jerks. I guess your motive was to insult a neighbor - how sad........
Excuse me Razldazir- I believe you started the sarcastic remarks against your neighbor, simply because I made an ANALOGY: "wow citizen rp - Blaming the victim as billyjoe does is just Palin (and no, not a typo) Stupid! - That was necessary? What does dragging her and politics into this conversation have to do with anything??"
And now I am a "smart ass jerk"? Well,it's painfully obvious you are two out three of those words, and here's a hint, "smart" is not one of them :)
You are all crazy! :) billyjoe, razzlewhatever...and you, citizen. I know who you are! Who are we supposed to be afraid of in RP...gangsters or bloggers?!
I kind of like the guy's original vigilante idea: Cut their nuts off and feed it to them. Such an act would send a strong message to the hoodlums of Rogers Park that were not messin' around anymore. A few crazy citizen vigilantes could clean up this place.
And when you're done cutting off their nuts, Mr. Marbles, you'll spend way more time in jail than these juvenile vandals ever would, plus you, your address, and your face will get a permanent spot on the National Sex Offenders Registry.
Thats why, Billie Joe, I didn't volunteer to do the nut cutting. Just encouraging anyone who might be fed-up and mentally close to the edge.
These are not petty crimes. Toilet papering and pumpkin smashing are petty crimes. This is intentionally destructive and malicious behavior that is causing great expense to innocent victims. Cut their nuts off...atleast the next generation won't have to deal with hoodlums' kids doing the same thing.
Mr. Marbles advocates castration for offenders, but wants "someone else" to perform the handiwork.
Fuckin' passive-aggressive pussy.
Oh, I'm a pussy? I'm still living here. What was your best suggestion, Billyjoe?
"Even better, start looking for a new area to live in....Occasional incidents pile up; there were enough of them to make me flee Rogers Park 10 years ago!"
Put your home for sale and flee when trouble arises in your neighborhood. Guess that explains why you were so sensative to my half-joking "i like the original idea of cutting their nuts off" response. Sounds like you had your balls cut off a long time ago.
I apologize, I just thought you were posting some jerk-off response on a blog dedicated to a neighborhood in which you haven't lived in for over 10 years. I should have been more sensative to your situation.
I'm with Mr. Marbles.
It think his real name is billyjoe-sue...you know one of those hyphenated white-trash "my mama and daddy are brother-and-sister" kinda names...
"I should have been more sensative [sic] to your situation."
Mr. Marbles: I think you should be LESS sensitive about being called a fuckin' passive-aggressive pussy. If you're calling for castrating people for nuisance crimes, then you be the one to wield the knife, not "someone" else.
Marcum: You accusing me of being an inbred girlie man! How original! Im so offended!
You're right BillyJoe...I should go troll a blog about a neighborhood I don't live in...now that's original.
I'd like to add to these comments about the the 1600 block of Estes. I live on that block, and my bike, as I previously posted on the 10/2 blog, was stolen from the INSIDE of my building. The front door to our condo building does not latch closed unless pulled shut, and someone walked in, walked down to our utility room, and stole my $1500 Eddie Bauer bike! So, I agree with DH...I'd like to find whoever's doing all this and cutt off their nuts as well! And if I see something, I have no issues with calling the cops. Sorry, but I just absolutely detest punks who think they are entitled to something that is not theirs, that they did not pay for and earn in a legal and ethical way! I don't care that this happens all over the world, it doesn't make it right and it doesn't make me feel any better about it.
Tiffany: Sorry you lost your bike, but I think youre bullshitting when you claim you paid $1,500 for it. That is, unless youre dumb enough to fit the stereotypical image of someone named "Tiffany."
If you did pay that much, you would have kept it inside your residence, not in a utility closet.
But honestly, prove to me that Eddie Bauer has bikes (and Im guessing they're made by some other company licensed to use the EB name) available in that price range. Personally, I wouldn't pay that for a bike unless it was made by a known (Trek) manufacturer.
My guess is the Eddie Bauer is a notch or two above Huffy, and that you didnt pay more than $300-$400.
Wow, I'm sorry that you feel the need to be a total asshole BillieJoe Cletus. This is a blog, not a forum to attack someone's name and character. I didn't post a personal attack on anyone here, so don't personally attack me by calling me dumb. And for the record, this bike was purchased by my parents, and Eddie Bauer bikes are not for sale anymore. Not that I can find online anyway. So, as for this proof you need, all I can provide is the fact that the frame of an Eddie Bauer bike, not even the whole bike is going for $300 on Ebay. So yes, it could cost that much. It had front and rear shocks, which drive up the price, premium tires, and was simply a very heavy duty road bike. Not that I need to justify myself to you any. But yes, I should have kept it in my apartment rather than the utility closet, and shouldn't have let my roommate convince me to put it in there. That was a mistake. But still, no need to be a total ass, unless you're the guy
I find this all rather sad (pathetic) that you waste your time reading blogs with the sole purpose of attacking people in those blogs, for no reason other than that you are obviously overcompensating for an area in your life that is lacking.
Oh, and before I am attacked again for what BillyJoe feels is an innacuracy...the frame goes for $219 to be exact (http://cgi.ebay.com/LADIES-MOUNTAIN-BIKE-FRAME-GIANT-EDDIE-BAUER-SPIRIT_W0QQitemZ150295483894QQcmdZViewItem?_trksid=p3286.m20.l1116#ebayphotohosting) and that doesn't include all other crucial parts that would GREATLY increase the price of the bike. Shocks, all weather tires, the highest end lights, custom seat (with shocks in the seat), etc.
" . . . this bike was purchased by my parents, and Eddie Bauer bikes are not for sale anymore."
So they're going to try to lie and get their insurance company to reimburse them $1,500 to "replace" it?
I'd warn them that insurance companies employ people who know the exact worth of Eddie Bauer bikes, and that they (or you) don't want to complicate your theft by engaging in fraud.
Um, assumptions are not always the best way to go, because more likely than not, they're wrong. And once again, YOU are wrong. They're NOT going to claim it on insurance, nor did I say they would. I wouldn't consider claiming a stolen bike on my insurance which would result in a raise in my premium.
"I wouldn't consider claiming a stolen bike on my insurance which would result in a raise in my premium."
Then why insure it in the first place? You really are coming off like a stereotypical "Tiffany."
I have renter's insurance. I didn't insure the bike specifically. I have renter's insurance for the general items in my possession in my apartment. Again with the assumptions.
Furthermore, do you really want to get into stereotypes regarding names? BILLYJOE? Honestly?
You already did.
Signed,
Billyjoe (Sue) Cletus.
Wow. That's all I can say.
"Wow" is just what I thought when I read Billy's response to my initial post. Oh well. That's what blogging is all about. It's a forum to express your opinion. And that is what I did. I expressed my opinion about punks causing serious damage in Rogers Park. I also shared a story of my experience with this situation. I'm sorry that one person did not like what I said, and I am sorry that I used this blog to continue and argument with this one person. Hopefully it won't happen again.
"Wow. That's all I can say."
Eloquent!
can we get back to the original topic of thug-castration. That was more fun.
I agree. If you see anyone puncturing tires, climbing fences, or with my bike, feel free to castrate away :) You won't hear any complaints from me!
While you guys were blogging back-and-forth, I think I spotted someone jacking your bike while you weren't looking!
I hate those g block kids, they are terrorizing the 1600 block of Greenleaf for too long
My profound sympathies to the victims of vandalism of their house and/or cars and bikes. That furnace will probably need to be replaced, a horrible expense for someone less than rich.Vandalizing someone's house is much more than a "nuisance" crime, and it deserves a year in detention for the juvenile offender. We let kids off too easy for stuff like this, which is why really serious, costly vandalism is a serious problem EVERYWHERE. It is very hard to get local authorities to either fully prosecute underage teens for serious stuff, and equally hard for a parent with a "problem" child to get backup from local law enforcement in dealing with a kid with serious delinquency problems who is often larger and stronger than the parent, and frequently bullies the parent.
Don't think it's exclusive to our "marginal" neighborhood. By "marginal" I mean a mostly nice area, which RP is, that still has "problem" pockets and groups of people.
It is equally a problem in affluent, supposedly pristine suburbs, and two people living in areas like that, who I know, have been seriously damaged by it. One man of my acquaintance had his house in an affluent Wisconsin community torched by an angry neighbor's kid. I mean, you don't have to pay in excess of $1MM for a house to live around people who will do this to you. An aunt of mine, living in an affluent "bedroom" exurb of another city, was beset by teens from the mostly Mormon families surrounding her, and was forever coming back from out of town to find her swimming pool filled with beer cans, and often could not get into her car because she would find local teens leaning up against it (in HER driveway), who would threaten and intimidate her, and who threatened to torch her house when she called the police to get them out of her driveway.
The only way to deal with teens is to keep them really busy. In lieu of voluntary after-school activity programs, might I suggest we re-introduce the old ethic that says that when teens aren't busy with school and homework, they should be assisting with family chores? These days, if you assign your kids laundry or dishwashing duties, you're considered to be a child abuser. I almost NEVER see a teen mowing the lawn or washing windows or the car around here. Put the little buggers to work off all that steam.
