I was witness to this beat-down. I was stopped at the stop sign headed north on Ashland at Farwell when a group of 30-40 gangbangers walked pass me going in the same direction. Within a second, there was two kids knocked to the ground and the 30-40 thugs were all over them, punching and kicking away. Within a minute, five cop cars pulled up and the thugs started running in every direction like a pack of wild animals loose in the city. Over the fences, out into the streets, through the yards and into the gangways and down the alleys. Even the two kids who were on the ground getting the crap beat out of themselves jumped up and took off running. The cops didn't even try to catch any of them. I guess they thought it would just be a lost cause. Tomorrow they will be back in school and at it again. Same oh, same oh. Unreal.

Here's a favorite carol my husband loves to sing while driving through "the Park" it follows the tune of "The Christmas Song"

"Crack rock roasting on an open fire,
Angel Dust nipping at your nose.
Everybody knows Santa pimps all the 'ho's...
Merry Christmas, Merry Christmas, tooooooo youuuuuuuuu!"

Latch key kids during their finest hours. It seems that Ginderske's grand experiment is a bit late and a few dollars short.

Our Chicago Park District knows how to spend its dollars. They just forgot how to attract kids to do something other then bang anoter kids head on the pavement.

All those wonderful leaflet seem to gather dust in the field houses until they are thrown out in the dumpsters to make room for the next semesters undersubscribed offerings. Seems like the gurus at the Park District have yet to come up with something that the kids will find entertaining.

I would rather see them wrestling, sparing or running, then stoned, flashing signs, and stabbing. Of course, either way, it seems the Park District folks still get paid.

I don't understand why public participation at field houses is not a criteria for keeping a supervisor or programmers job!

But, then, who am I to dictate, enact guidelines, or suggest policy. I guess that might be the Responsibility of the Moore and Sullivan Show.

Do you get the impression that Moore and his staff shun outspoken constituents or is it just my imagination. You would think efforts would be made to approach those who make comments to the staff. I get the impression that either Moore and his Staffers are occasionally snide or have political Alzheimers.

Of course, I would welcome a change, since I am unaware of any cure for Alzheimers, yet.

How pray tell do you get apathetic youngsters, with apathetic parent(s) involved in Park District activities?

How is societal violence the Park Districts fault?

There are MANY programs/help/activities for all aspects of our population.

You all may have heard the phrase; You can lead a horse to water, but you cannot make them drink.

If one does not avail themselves of the programs/help that are available how is that anyones fault except that of the "victim"?

Re:Lafew's post.

Latch Key kids; Sounds like a parenting decision.

Kids pounding heads instead of more productive activities; Sounds like parenting decisions coming home to roost.

Leaflets gathering dust. Sounds like blaming the people/organization that is actually TRYING to provide alternatives.

Rather see them wrestling/sparing/running. Me too.

Public participation does reflect on Park District Supervisors.
We can look forward to Park Facilities closing. The PD has a budgetary staffing level of approximately 3000 people. Approx 500-600 of those positions are un-filled at this time due to retirements and so forth. The PD just did an early retirement program of an additional 300 people. So, staffing levels are almost down by 1000 people or 1/3rd. We can expect our smaller facilities to close their doors in the next 3-6 months. Enrollment in programs will be a leading criterion for which facilities close.

But, then, who are you; If you have better ideas, get involved. Join a Park Advisory Council and help to develop the programs you feel will have an impact on YOUR AREA.

The last 2 paragraphs are spot on.

Wow - it has got to be frustrating and a pain in the ass to be a cop and deal with these obnoxious kids!
