I understand your concern and I'm not making light of it. But sometimes (not all the time) this "mourning" could be avoided in the first place. What, you mean besides my regular job working with children, mostly teens, for a state agency, and the volunteer work I do as a tutor/mentor in Edgewater? and the work I used to do with Phillip Jackson's Black Star project?... not much.

Well, at the risk of sounding arrogant (which I guess I already do), I DO tell people what to do or what I think they should do regarding this particular situation. This is SERIOUS. There is almost an entire generation out there that has pretty much given up dreaming and planning for the future and instead has settled on living day-to-day, doing whatever it takes to just get by from one 24 hour period to another. And I do mean whatever it takes, whether it's stealing an iPod from some guy walking down the street or selling drugs. And for most of them, it's not because they have to. Most of them don't NEED money to live, they WANT money to buy "things". And it's making them take an attitude that is not only hurting them but us too.
So if I seem judgemental, well maybe I am and maybe someone should be. I'm pretty sick of all the excuses being made for these "kids". I grew up in Robert Taylor in a gang era, managed to make it to an era when planning for and going to college became the norm and now have seen it slip back into this live-for-today, don't-disrepect-me crap. It's about time everybody got "judgemental" and demanded that their parents take responsiblity for their kids. of course you can't watch them 24 hours a day, but a parent doing their job knows what their kid is into and who they're hanging out with, if they're spending more time on the corner than in the house reading for tomorrow's assignment. So yeah, paint me judgemental.
Or you can continue to make excuses, until the hardworking people of Rogers Park get fed up, move out, leave the area to the gangbangers and say hello to the new Cabrini-Green, an area that the city will be more than happy to wash its hands of.
