Friday's Alright for Fighting

2:42 PM: Police watching the corner of Bosworth and Pratt ask for back-up as a very large crowd of Sullivan Fight School students gather for a fight. Rowdy crowd of posturing fighters sees police coming and split in multiple directions.

2:49 PM: 911 caller says a group of brawlers are now grappling in the street at Greenview and North Shore. Police head that way.

2:54 PM: Radio alert. Police are chasing one person eastbound on Pratt.

2:59 PM: Police disperse one person for "narcotics loitering" at 1601 West Pratt. Council time is 14:59 on the clock. The event number for this dispersal is 10323.

Kriana Jackson, a sophomore at Sullivan, said it's a sign of a broader culture of acceptance of abuse. "There was a girl at school this week with a scratch on her eye," Jackson said. "She was talking openly about her boyfriend hitting her, but she was smiling and saying it was funny." Source/read more.

3:19 PM: 911 caller says teacher hit a 13 year old at 1600 West Jonquil.

Read the tribune's story today titled "Some Teens Blame Rihanna" Sullivan students are quoted that Rihanna deserved to be punch by Chris Brown.

Voilence with these teens is normal.

Thanks for the information. I posted it on the homepage.

From the Tribune;

Many teens blame Rihanna, say dating violence normal

1 in 10 teens suffer abuse in romantic relationships, and many think it's often justified.

In Chicago, Sullivan High School sophomore Adeola Matanmi has heard the same.

"People said, 'I would have punched her around too,' " Matanmi said. "And these were girls!"

Ed Loos, a junior at Lake Forest High School, said a common reaction among students to Chris Brown's alleged attack on Rihanna goes something like this: "Ha! She probably did something to provoke it."

Well according to these kids, the 13 year old "probably did something to provoke it" and they would have "punched {him/her} around too."

But seriously, I keep getting closer and closer to saying "f*ck it all" about this generation. How can you argue with this kind of logic that is so pervasive? If it were just my own kid, I could fix this type of logic. But these aren't my kids, these are someone else's, almost a whole school's-worth who think getting smacked around is justified.

So if their parents don't care... bottom line, I didn't put off having kids because I wanted to raise someone else's.

Anyway...

I knew this was going to happen. Not surprising, but stupid. Saw a near fight break out and heard word of fighting.

The comments of the misinformed and clueless teens in the Tribune article make me wonder if some adult close to them is being abused. I believe that would also play into blanket acceptance of domestic and dating abuse.

I heard comedian Steve Harvey say on his radio show yesterday that a real man walks away from an arguement instead of hitting a woman. It's disturbing that some teenage girls appear to think that real men hit females. It's just as disturbing that some young males think that as well.

3 young teens killed with assault weapon outside a south side high school; possibly gang affiliated. Sullivan High School is headed in that direction if this fighting cannot be stopped.
